Frank Gore ran circles around Shaun Alexander, and then the San Francisco 49ers’ defense finished off another surprising victory for a long-suffering club that’s finally on the rise.
Gore rushed for a franchise-record 212 yards, and San Francisco’s maligned defense stopped the Seattle Seahawks three times in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the 49ers’ third straight victory, 20-14.
Alex Smith passed for 163 yards, threw a TD pass and rushed for another score for the 49ers (5-5), who went scoreless in the second half. But they still hung on to snap a six-game losing streak against their NFC West rivals, the defending conference champs.
Arnaz Battle caught a TD pass and Smith rushed for a score as San Francisco jumped to a 20-0 halftime lead. But the Niners’ first three-game winning streak since 2002 wasn’t secure until its defense—which has given up just 30 points in its last 3 1/2 games—stopped Seattle’s final three drives with a fourth-down tackle, an interception and the clock running out.
Gore broke Charlie Garner’s team record of 201 yards on a 17-yard romp in the final seconds, but only after he fumbled to give Seattle (6-4) its second last-minute chance.
Seneca Wallace passed for 239 yards and hit Deion Branch and Darrell Jackson for long second-half touchdowns, but he threw three interceptions. And the Seahawks got little boost from having Alexander and Matt Hasselbeck back in uniform.
Alexander, the reigning league MVP who hadn’t played in two months, managed just 37 yards on 17 carries in his first game back from a broken foot. Hasselbeck, who hurt his knee last month, dressed but didn’t play behind Wallace, who threw the interceptions but was mostly solid.
The 49ers first tackled Alexander on fourth down at the 36 with 1:52 left, ending a disorganized drive. But Gore, who fumbled four times in four games earlier in the season, coughed it up on the next play.
Wallace then threw his third interception directly to cornerback Walt Harris. But San Francisco’s Joe Nedney, who had never missed a field goal shorter than 30 yards before blowing two in this game, hooked a 27-yarder with 34 seconds left.
But the Seahawks ran out of time, with Wallace failing to get them over midfield on four plays.
Gore, the second-year pro from Miami whose injury history scared off other teams in last year’s draft, passed the 1,000-yard mark in his breakout season, gashing the Seattle defense for repeated long gains. The Seahawks’ tackling was atrocious, prompting several furious sideline tirades by coach Mike Holmgren.
Battle caught a 9-yard TD pass after Wallace’s second interception, and Smith scored on a 1-yard lunge later in San Francisco’s 17-point second quarter. Running mostly behind linemen Larry Allen and Jonas Jennings, Gore picked up 130 yards in the first half.
Seattle opened the second half with a scoring drive ending in Branch’s 38-yard TD catch. The teams traded punts until Wallace spotted Jackson down the Seattle sideline with 6:40 to play, throwing a 41-yard TD pass to pull Seattle within six points.
At halftime, the 49ers held an official retirement ceremony for receiver Jerry Rice, who signed a one-day contract before the season with the club that was his home for 16 of his 20 record-setting NFL seasons.

Great win for the team… I’m really surprise with the turn around of the D with the additions of Brandon Moore and Keith Lewis… Both are proving to be playmakers of D. It was kind of an ugly win at the end but all that matters is that we won…. Gore is a monster besides the fumble he play outstanding we need to sign him NOW before it becomes more expensive. I’m kind of worry with our Offense when they get in the red zone… hopefully with VD returning they’ll improve we need to beat the Rams in order to have a shoot at least to the wild card game…keep blitzing
Jerry Rice is the best WR hands down…who ever is #2 is still miles away from RICE…go niners

Nedney missed 2 easy FG’s, gore fumbled at the end, and the damn refs won’t give Arnaz that touchdown; we practically tried to lose the game. But the reason why we won was because we were DESTINED TO WIN THIS GAME, there was NO WAY IN HELL that the seafags were going to beat us seven times in a row.

Keep improving, keep giving 110%, and Norv Turner is starting to add more plays and open up the offense. Keep it up defense, we’ve missed you so…..

Keep going boys, you’re making it fun to watch our Niners again

We have a lot of young talent thriving to improve week after week… We should all be excited… but to stay on topic…
Frank Gore is probably the best running back in the history of the team, and he’s only in his second year. I know a lot of people will want to wait before we crown him with that title, but watch him play and it’s hard to argue. We have had a lot of good running backs that could run, block, and catch, but Gore can do it all and he does it all extremely well.

Man, just one score in the second half would have made things a hell of a lot easier.
5-5. Who wudda thunk?

that was gut renching at the end after the frank gore fumble. they should throw the ball deep not just go for those short passes that go nowhere. they can win another 2 games vs STL and GB.

I think they have a chance at 9 wins, maybe 10 if they get lucky. St Louis, then GB, Zona and Hawks are all very winnable with the way they’ve been playing. If we could get lucky at NO, or catch Denver resting their starters we could end up with 10 wins and probably the West…

Came into the season thinking the Niners would be competitive each week. Gave them a good shot at 6 or 7 wins. But it’s great seeing them improve each week. I’m not thinking we’re Superbowl bound this year or anything, but the pieces are there for the future. Pass defense… especially depth at CB… is weak. I think with a good draft and maybe a couple good free agent pick ups, next year could be a great year.
On the other side of the ball, the red zone and third down offense needs to improve. But with Gore running like this, with deep threats like Bryant and Davis, the field should open up a bit.

Sammy Davis need to be ready to play. I would hate to lose a game because of him blowing a coverage. Very tense game especially in the 4th quarter. Go Niners. I am so happy to finally start winning again. Please Spencer stay healthy. Good job Nolan.

Davis #6 Pick for President shut up you fool. Ofcourse we’re able to critize a head coach when things arnt going well. We cant blindly support them. Nolan has has some great drafts, but untill the last few weeks the D has been terrible, and that doesnt look good on a head coach is a D specialist. Im glad the team is turning around, and I think Turner is a huge influence why that is. Gore is playing likle a STUD
Im so glad i picked him up in all my fantasy teams (very low rounds too), and the fans from other teams laughed then I did. Whos laughing now

So the only question I have- Has Nolan completely taking over the D? I see him gathering them on the sideline, and really getting after them. Has he taken away authority from Billy Davis? I just don’t see what has caused such a great turn around on the defense.
But I’m not complaining, 3 in a row, go Niners!!

Great performance by the team yesterday. Should have had it won easily, what with the missed FGs, the ridiculous overturn of Battle’s 2nd and Gore’s fumbling….but 3 wins in a row? Fantastic stuff. And with Alexander obviously needing time to get back into shape, and Hasselbeck also returning from injury, we have a real shot at the division.
Unfortunately, we don’t exactly have the easiest of schedules. We’ve got the Saints in the Superdome (though they have been poor lately), a Seattle team that may have Alexnader and Hasselbeck approaching full fitness and the Broncos in Denver. I don’t know if we’ll do it; Nolan certainly deserves some Coach of the Year votes, though.

Great game, to give some credit to Alex Smith (besides the great performances by GORE and our Defense and the end…. DAMN I CAN´T BELIVE I JUST SAID THAT
), the kid is certainly a smart QB, his really taking care of the ball, and slowly imporving his completion percentage (76% on this one and 70% in the last 3 games with just one INT). I really love what Turner is doing with him. I do think he needs to take a bigger leadership roll in the team, take control down the end and move the chains consistently. Let´s hope VD gives us that additional punch we need down the end zone. GREAT WIN, ROLLING WITH NOLAN…. GORE THE WHORE…. AND MOORE THE BEAST. PLAYOFFS GET READY FOR THE NINERS CAUSE WERE COMING SOONER THAN ANYONE EXPECTED.
Just one extra thought, we should´ve gone for the 4th down after the over rule…. and what the hell is that about “just a few inches before he roke the plane”. Come on REF, BE SERIOUS

Coach Nolan is doing a VERY good job. Where were we last year?
Oh that’s right, in last fucking place with one of the worst teams I have ever seen. Alex Smith has progressed and when V. Davis comes back we’ll have a top 15 offense in the league.
Now, lets recap the Bears games:
@ GB 26-0
vs. DET 34-7
@ MIN 19-16
vs. SEA 37-6
vs. BUF 40-7
@ ARI 24-23
LOOK AT THOSE SCORES.
You guys are terrible fans.”
I posted this after the Chicago game when everyone was bitching about Nolan and saying that he was a terrible coach, the Niners were better with Erickson(LOL) and other things. All those people who were trashing Nolan and the Niners have no right to be celebrating with us true fans now.

I think that when Erickson was hired, York was still a new owner with a terrible GM whom he considered to be adequate because he had worked under Bill Walsh. He trusted Donahue’s pick and because York was still new as an owner, he didn’t know what he was getting into. All he knew was that Erickson was a very successful college coach with some experience in the pros. I think he learned a lot in that time when Erickson was coach and when Mike Nolan interviewed and had that attitude that York knew was needed, he went with it. I have never been a huge York fan. In fact I used to hate him. I loved Eddie D., but I can say that it looks like York really wants to become a good, if not great, owner and he’s doing everything he needs to to rebuild his severely damaged reputation.
