Derek Smith who has the lazy eye syndrome has decided against surgery which basically would have ended his season. Smith tried last week to wear a helmet shield which would have helped corrected his vision problem, but he felt it didn’t help at all so he removed it. The 49ers and Smith both feel the eye condition has resulted in his poor play. So instead of opting for surgery and letting someone else fill his spot and make tackles, Smith has decided to stay on the field and play through the eye condition.

Am I wrong but isn’t it a team decision who goes on IR? So PUT Smith on IR, and he really has no choice and might as well get the surgery. Help the team now, be ready for next year. i beleave the heart and soul of a good defense,is its middle linebackers,j.trotter,ray lewis brian urlacher and edwards for the chargers.you can put a half way desent linebacker in there and get a 100 tacklesthe great ones make plays on the ball,tipped pass,cause fumbles and get sacks or put heat on the quarterbacks and d.smith isnt doing that so he is hurting the team by playing.plus he is in the twilight of his career.we are gonna need some one soon

I say Derek should be doubtful for atleast the next four games and give his eye some rest. Have Ulbrich in his place, because I think MLB is already tough enough to play with two good eyes. Let alone just one. This’ll be tough, but Nolan needs to bench him before other teams start really taking advantage of this weekness.
