Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat reported that around the trade deadline the 49ers targeted only one player. That player was Nate Clements. The 49ers however did not want to give up a 2nd round pick to acquire Clements. Clements is a free agent after this season, so if the 49ers still want him they’ll have to go out and pay him.

Someone else will spend a few bucks more for clements than our cheap low budget franchise. You can’t build a super bowl contender through the draft in 8 years, you have to have balance! Good drafts & quality free agents! When your cheap, the players you drafted 3-4 years ago(besides Kwame)will leave for more money when their contract expires, you fools that keep saying “build through the draft” are frick’n retarded & have no clue. Their not leaving for more money, it’s alot more frickn money! We have some young studs but we have to stop bargain hunting the next 2 years so we can get to the playoffs. In conclusion, I like Alex Smith but he needs to show some anger once in a while! Get pissed off & throw your frickn helmet, act like your getting your ass kicked when you are!

The Niners will attempt to reel in Clements but it will be very difficult with 31 other teams aiming to sign him! Remember they may state that we only targeted Clements but didnt want to give up a 2nd rounder…their were at least 10 other teams targeting Clements!

why would we trade a second round draft pick for a guy who would not come back the next year that makes no sense we are already out of the playoffs…

uhh.. you trade for him and sign him to a new contract. like deion branch did with seattle.

look at new england, they dont seem to bring in any big name free agents every year, they only seem to lose their good players. they bring in 2nd tier players or players that are not as good as they used to be (doug gabriel, reche caldwell) (rodney harrison, corey dillon).they drafted their QB,RB,TE,OL,DL. and look at tully banta-cain (cal product) he was a 7th round pick and he had 3 sacks on monday night. so it is possible to build through the draft. its not a stupid idea.

plus we brought in antonio bryant, larry allen, walt harris all quality free agents.

Johnny,
You’re assuming Nate would want to sign a contract extension right away with the 49ers. Most players want to test the free agent market. Furthermore, many players will quickly blot away from crappy teams.
If Nate had 3-4 years left, I’d gladly trade a 2nd rounder for him. But that not being the case, it would have been a silly trade.

Well unfortunately, the draft is a lottery (Kwame or Baas for example). FA is expensive, but at least you have proven players at the NFL level. Any player drafted could be great or a complete bust, no one has the answer for that. What New England has is a great palyer friendly organization were anyone wants to stay for less money, unfortunately we´re not that type of organization right now.
I do agree with Turner, good balance is that key.

Yeah you can build through the draft that way but lookat the Patriots coaching staff. Bill knows what he is doing. I’m not saying that Nolan doesn’t, but I know we don’t have the talent to simply go to the playoffs through the draft. But smart move on passing on Clements, he would have left us high and dry for next year.

I feel that it is a fine balance and luck. NE lucked into Brady,, otherwise they would have chosen him earlier. Bill Walsh, the QB Guru, chose Carmazzi, and not Brady. Draft picks are unknown commodoties and if they pan out then you are good right away. Examples of quality FA’s is Tony Parrish when he first came and maybe Jonas Jennings was an example of overspending. He was labled injury prone before we signed him.
York needs to shed the nickle and dime image and continue building this team. Now to his credit he did eat the contracts of Erickson and Donohue when many questioned if he would do it.
Last year we were an utter mess on both sides of the ball. However, most of the good players we got this year are on the offensive side and if look closely our defense is a year older and many of the same players minus some.

With young players you need veteran leadership to help the growing process. Why do you think they got Allen, W. Harris, and Trent Dilfer? So those three could help further the progress of our young O-Line, Secondary, and QBs.
If you question that then look at the Chicago Bulls of the NBA. They had a nice young team but knew they needed Veteran leadership and picked up Ben Wallace and PJ Brown(25 years played combined). When you are rebuilding you need that leadership until the younger players have a few years under their belts.
Im sorry but some of you guys are ridiculous. Rebuilding takes a few years but so does cleaning up the mess that Donohue and Erickson made of this team in 2 years. That is going to add a bit more time to the rebuilding process and you guys should know that by now. This isnt the same situation as other franchises. Marvin Lewis was able to rebuild Cincy quickly because they had sucked long enough to acquire enough decent talent from the first rounds of the draft. Alls he had to do was add a few pieces and let it gel. Look at the roster a year ago. It was full of bad moves by Donohue and we had to purge that and bring in new players. Stop overreacting because it’s another bad season. Just because other teams turn it around quickly dont mean all do I mean look at Arizona. They havent done so in years but are a few pieces from doing so and Nolan is making smarter moves then their GMs in the past. So stop being a bunch of babies already.

If you ask me two of the best decisions he Nolan took this year:
1- Letting Kevan Barlow go… he was extremely over paid for the lack of interest he showed.
2- And to me, letting Julian Peterson go was the right move to at that moment in time, he was way to expensive. Drafting Manny to replace him was OK.
Does anyone know how much we saved with the Barlow deal?

What is all this talk about signing Nate Clements??? That’s too much money! I ain’t paying that much for a player, I need to save all my money for myself. Mikey Nolan will do my bidding and build through and only through the draft, where we can sign late rounders for cheap money and early rounders for more money than they are worth. You all know I am the stingiest and cheapest owner in the NFL, ACCEPT IT! I can care less where this team goes, so for those of you thinking we will get anyone valuable please get your hopes back down. We will be signing players that other teams do not want and I will make sure all of these “fan websites” feed you dumbasses little shortliners like “one player does no make a team,” “build through the draft,” and “if we spend money on anyone it will instantly mean salary cap hell.” I am going to go to a casino tonight and gamble away all the money I am saving and can care less about the 49ers franchise and it’s fans. Keep buying the jersies, keep filling the stadiums, and keep getting me richer because all the money going into my pocket is not coming out
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

News? Not Really

This story is not real. All names are made up, except in cases when public figures are being satirized. All quotes are fictional and any similarity to actual quotes is coincidental.
SAN FRANCISCO—During the 2006 offseason, the NFL introduced a new “flexible scheduling” system, which allows the league to tinker with the schedule during the season in order to ensure only the best match-ups are shown during prime time. The league also announced that it will utilize the new system to eliminate all remaining San Francisco 49er games, thereby ensuring the overall quality of play remains at a high level.
“This new flexible scheduling system gives us a lot of options,” said Commissioner Roger Goodell. “It allows us to shift the starting times of our best match-ups to Sunday night, but it also allows us to trim some of the fat off the schedule. In this case ‘the fat’ means the San Francisco 49ers. Don’t take it personal, guys. It’s just business. The good news is we’re going to count the rest of your games as losses, so you can have the top draft pick next year. Hint: take a defender, preferably one with a criminal record, so you can have at least one person on that team with a set of balls.”
According to Goodell, every NFL owner voted in favor of eliminating the 49ers from the schedule, including 49ers owner John York.
“It was unanimous,” Goodell said. “I think it was kind of a no-brainer. The 49ers are utterly hopeless, and they’re not even hopeless in an interesting way like the Arizona Cardinals. They’re hopeless in a who-gives-a-crap, what-else-is-on-TV sort of way. Even John York can see that. He was like ‘Thank you for having mercy on us, Mr. Commissioner.’ Then he immediately got on his cell phone and called his coach Mike Nolan and said ‘It’s over.’ He had tears in his eyes. It was actually really moving considering he’s a robot and all.”
For the remainder of the season, all teams that were scheduled to play the 49ers will be given a bye week and a free victory. Season ticket holders will also receives refunds for the lost games. The cost and inconvenience of giving the refunds are a small price to pay for a chance to take the rest of the season off and regroup, says York.
“This is actually a boon for us, even though it’s a little embarrassing,” said York. “We definitely need some time to catch our breath and assess exactly what went wrong this year. We have a lot of work ahead of us to get back on the right track. And yes, we’re keeping our head coach. Why wouldn’t we? He works cheap, he never complains, and, because of some kind of unidentified mental disorder, he stills believes in his players.”
Coach Mike Nolan expressed disappointment about being eliminated from the schedule, but isn’t planning on packing it in just yet.
“It’s a terrible thing to be spurned like this, but instead of complaining about it, we’re going to make the most of it,” said Nolan, who has compiled a 6-17 record since taking over the job in 2005. “We’re going to hold practices, we’re going to study film, and we’re going to play scrimmages against each other. See, this adversity is only going to make us stronger. Next year, we will NOT be eliminated from the schedule halfway through the season! How’s that for a rallying cry? I’m having it printed up on t-shirts to hand out to the players.”
For the remainder of the Niners opponents, the NFL’s decision to cut the hapless team has been a godsend. Those who criticized the new flexible schedule are now singing its praises.
“I tell you, when I first heard about this flexible schedule thing I was a little annoyed,” said Vikings coach Brad Childress, whose team was slated to meet the Niners next week. “But now I’m starting to have a change of heart. That extra bye week is really going to help us next week. Yet I can’t help but be a little saddened at how far the 49ers have fallen. What an embarrassment. See, that’s why I came to the Vikings. They understand that if you stay consistently mediocre all the time, you’ll never have to experience these epic collapses.”
“Hey, don’t laugh,” he added. “We sell out every game. As far as ownership is concerned, we’re doing just as good as the Patriots.”

The problems are in our front seven. We need to trade down our 1st round pick 6-10 to New England and pick up there two number 1’s maybe 22 and 28. We need more than one player. We can get Lamar Woody de/olb and Okobe Nt. in the first, The top of the second we can get a MLb maybe Buster Davis. Lucky for us that this years draft is deep in DE’s and Safetys,wr,olb/de’s and cb’s
