Brian Urlacher’s one-handed interception was headed to the highlight reel as soon as he tumbled to the ground after somehow batting the ball to himself.
Urlacher’s stellar play symbolized what kind of afternoon it was for the refreshed and still unbeaten Chicago Bears – and how frustrating the day was for the San Francisco 49ers.
Wearing bright orange uniforms and showing their speed on defense and special teams, the Bears overwhelmed the 49ers from the outset. They jumped to a 24-0 first-quarter lead and 41-0 halftime cushion before coasting to a 41-10 victory Sunday.
At 7-0, Chicago is off to its best start since the 1985 Super Bowl champions won their first 12 games.
“It was amazing. Twenty-four points in the first quarter? That’s pretty impressive, especially in this league. It doesn’t happen a lot,” said Rex Grossman, who rebounded from his poorest performance to throw three TD passes.
Urlacher’s acrobatic interception, in which he batted Alex Smith’s pass and then caught it with one hand as he was being knocked down by the 49ers Justin Smiley, was one of four turnovers the Bears generated in the first half. All four led to touchdowns.
Urlacher’s play came on the heels of a national sports magazine survey of NFL players in which he was rated the second-most overrated player to Terrell Owens.
Asked if he had any reaction to the poll, last year’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year said: “No, I don’t. Watch the film. I don’t know what people are saying. All I can do is go out there and play hard and try to help my team win.”
Grossman rebounded from a four-interception, two-fumble performance in a narrow 24-23 win at Arizona before a bye week to complete 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards against the 49ers’ woeful pass defense.
“I’m just glad I went out and did what the coaches asked me to do, respond from having a poor game and learn from some of the mistakes I made and continue to get better,” Grossman said.
The 24 first-quarter points set a franchise record for the opening period and the 41 in the first half tied a mark set in 1948 against Washington.
“At halftime you just think to yourself, `How did it get out of control so fast?’” said 49ers defensive lineman Bryant Young. “It happened so fast we were just trying to find a way to get it resolved. ... We have to give ourselves a chance.”
San Francisco averted a shutout in the fourth quarter on a 23-yard field goal by Joe Nedney and a 16-yard TD pass from Smith to Antonio Bryant.
Six plays after Urlacher’s interception, Grossman’s 5-yard TD pass to Muhsin Muhammad made it 17-0 and the Bears were on their way.
How good are they?
“No one expects us to do what we do. No one wants to give us any credit,” Urlacher said. “Everyone wants to say they didn’t play well. There’s a reason they didn’t play well.”
Smith was stripped of the ball in the 49ers’ next series, and Tommie Harris picked it up and ran to San Francisco’s 13. That set up a 1-yard TD by Cedric Benson and a 24-0 lead with a minute to go in the opening quarter.
“Hopefully I will never have to deal with a halftime coming in 41-0 like that,” Smith said. “We talked about it all week. This is a team that feeds off turnovers, a team that strives off turnovers.”
The Bears had such a comfortable lead they went on fourth down from the San Francisco 1 early in the second quarter. Grossman lofted a TD pass to Desmond Clark.
After the Bears took an early 3-0 lead, the 49ers Maurice Hicks fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Cameron Worrell recovered at the 15, leading to a 7-yard TD run by Thomas Jones.
San Francisco entered giving up 32 points a game, but the defense wasn’t to fault early on because turnovers allowed the Bears to work from short fields. Drives started at the 15, 41 and 13, and they turned all three into touchdowns to take the big opening-quarter lead.
The 49ers coughed up the ball a fourth time late in the half when Bryant caught a pass and fumbled, with Ricky Manning Jr. recovering.
Instead of running out the clock, the Bears capitalized again. Grossman’s 27-yard TD pass to a wide-open Clark with 10 seconds left, which completed a quick four-play, 70-yard drive in just 62 seconds.

damn straight up giving up 30+ pts in 3 games this season? are you guys forgetting alex smith’s 3 turnovers too? we need to rebuild and fire nolan. that bitch thinks hes the shit around here. giving guys the designation of “nolan guy” and not signing any big defense FAs. heres my theory: he mainly worked on the offense because the offense is what fans like to see. it’s what sells the tickets. good franchises with good coaches don’t do this. they take it slowly by adding a bit each year to both sides of the ball, making a balanced team. well…

You know, I promised myself I was not going to question Nolan’s coaching for 2 years because of the bare cupboard he was left with, but… getting entirely dominated/blown out in 4 of your first 7 games and basically getting smacked around whenever the games mean anything is.. embarrassing. And at this point, if the 49ers get blown out 3 or 4 more times this year, regardless of the excuses, Nolan has to be fired.
this will be the 3rd consecutive year of having the team most likely to get blown out on any given night… And I firmly believe that they would have lost to the Raiders if the game was in Oakland.
And no, I don’t take solace in the fact that arizona is imploding.

We got spanked… but it was to the best team in the league. What do you expect? Our defense has regressed from last year with the loss of Carter and Peterson, this is true, but this regression is not as great as the huge huge gains we have made offensively. Last year we had the last ranked offense and defense in the league; this year our offense looks alright and our defense is atrocious. This years team would beat last years team. We have had a lot of bad breaks this year, and of course have played some good teams.
Hopefully we do another round of letting go of crappy players, and focus on the defense. If we can change the defense this offseason like the enormous improvement we made to the offense last offseason, we will be a much better team next year.
Now, if only we didn’t SUCK SO DAMN MUCH RIGHT NOW AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH lol.

man..i know its frusterating guys, but we all gotta stick in there ya know, i dont believe mike nolan is the problem..and i think that this offseason was fine, last year our offense stunk this year its a lil bit better, could things have been helped on the defense more, of course…but its not nolan’s fault…it all starts up in the front office and then, the play of the teams, followed by the coaches and coordinators…i think billy davis neds to take some heat for this one, what has he really helped our team these couple years, i think he should be canned and a proven replacement needs to be found, where? i dunno. ya know as i see it its a rebuilding process, its frusterating i mean going froma team that every year was playoff bound to this, specailly with some of the freinds i got here in jersey, colts fans, eagles, steelers, you name it…and every week its the same crap i get, and ive never once given up, ill stick in there i know they got atleast a couple more wins in there..i think there needs to be a regrouping and soul/ talent searching within the organization these next couple days….like Antonio Bryant said, and i agree after this game i mean maybe it can be a wake up call of some sorta in the organization.
10 hours after the fact.Ricky said:
I agree with you chris, its not Nolans fault. Billy Davis definatly needs to take heat but I put it 50-50, 50 on Davis and 50 on the defensive players, they need to stop playing like pussys and hit the other team and stop blowing assignments. We take it harder cause our team was great for so long, were not used to this and I dont think well have to take it much longer. I think Billy Davis will be gone at the end of the season maybe sooner and unlike the dark erickson era Nolan signs free agents and can put together a competent draft. We have showen great offensive progress, we have a running back who dosent just lay down like barlow, no more rotating horrible Qbs and Smiths progress is just amazing. And hey at least were not raiders or cardinals fans

Some of you guys calling for Nolan’s head or bashing Alex you forget who we were playing this week. The Bears made a few teams look really really bad. Smith didnt have an amazing game but it wasnt horrible either. With that defense it could have been alot worse. But seriously why does the NFL scheduling dept hate us so much? First 7 games were like this…
@ Arizona(gee can you tell they wanted to give the Cards a win to open their home stadium?)
St. Louis(They ended up being good so that makes our win good)
Philly(That team wasnt bad because of talent last season. They had regained their swagger for us)
@ KC(One of the most difficult places to play and the NFL puts us there early)
Oakland(Ok they are terrible but they were supposed to be alot better on paper)
San Diego(jeez if this team cant crush the momentum of a rebuilding team…)
then we get a bye
@ Chicago(Yea the best team in the league gets to be part of the first half of our schedule)
Almost all of those teams listed above were either expected to do good things and are or were supposed to do good things but are underacheiving. Fortunately for us that was the hard part of our schedule.
Minnesota(good team, there is potential that this is like the game vs TB last season)
@ Detroit(I can see us winning here)
Seattle(good news is we are home, bad news is it is seattle)
@ St. Louis(it could go either way)
@ New Orleans(I doubt we come out of this with a win)
Green Bay(This is a winnable game)
@ Seattle(hahaha we dont stand a chance here)
Arizona(win)
@ Denver(if they play the second team this is a win. If they play first stringers its a loss)
So the rest of the way is much more favorable for us. I can see atleast 3-4 more wins in that if our confidence wasnt completely crushed the past two games.
But we all knew going into this season there was still work to be done so anyone blaming this on Nolan is retarded. And of course the team will allow alot of points when the Defense is horrible like it is now. But atleast the Offense is trying to do their part and for the most part made strides in the right direction.
So I say next year is going to be a concentration on Defense in the off-season. The O is already set and will be a force once the players in place hit their prime. We just need to get talent on the Defensive side of the ball mostly on the Line and Secondary.
15 hours after the fact.Nick said:
Wow hill, calling us out as bad fans for expecting the team to not get blown out more than half the time?
Yea Smith has improved alot, because of Turners adjusted offense.
What exactly has Nolan done thus far? He got rid of all the guys he did not like, and brought in 2 offensive lineman who are injury prone.
Nolan was supposed to be a defensive guy, is he helping with the D? No he’s leaving that to someone else.
As a 49er fan I reserve the right to critique the job, or lack there of, the head coach is doing.
Can I repeat one more time that Nolan has almost nothing to do with the offensive improvement?
Also, don’t compare the 49ers struggles to any other teams struggles, thats an easy way out, chances are there will always be at least one team doing worse regardless of how bad the 49ers are. This team is showing up flat on the road just like the Erikson era. This team is turning the ball over just like the Erikson era. This team is giving up large chunks of field on a play to play basis.
You guys keep saying “big surprise they lost to the best team in the NFL”. Even if the bears are the best team in the NFL. 41-0 is the largest deficit in NFL history at the half. If this was just a usual thing that bad teams lost to good teams this badly it wouldn’t be.
Nolan has alot to prove to me the rest of the season. Particularly in getting the team ready for a road game.

I agree that it´s not Nolan´s fault. To be honest, I haven´t seen the game yet, I´m still trying to build up the courage to depress myself further, but with the stats, several things pop up to me:
1- Alex Smith had a good completed pass percentage(61.5%) and only one interception.
2- Frank Gore´s 111 yds rushing and 9.3 yds per carry.
Again I was expecting a facing smashing anyway, and you have to be crazy if you were expecting the Niners to beat Chicago (arguably the best team in the NFL) at their own field.
I do think it´s time for a change in Defense, let´s hope Nolan has a good Nolan Guy in mind. In regards to next season, does anyone know how much Cap Room we have left right now for this season? How much will we have next year? I do think our offense is on it´s way, we have to give Norv Turner time to groom Alex. An you can already see the difference with only 4 or 5 months of coaching. Let´s just hope we can land 3 or 4 four good defensive players via FA and 2007 Draft. We´ll have to wait and see.
I´ll tell you more tomorrow after I see the game… that´s if I´m in the mood.

Did you really think he would take on of the worst teams in recent history, and in one offseason, make a great offense AND a great defense?
Bill Walsh came in and led the Niners to a 2-14 and 6-10 record. Guess what?
The 3rd season, they won the superbowl.

Regarding draft, I´d rather pick up FAs for the secondary, that type of job requires experience and it´s not something you can come and excel right out of college. Linebackers and Defensive linemen are like RBs in the draft. You can take a good college RB and have him be very productive from day one. But, Corners and safeties are like QBs ans WRs, they require 1-3 years experience to develop. I don´t think Nolan has 3 more years to develop any young CB into a shut down corner.
I say we draft DE`s on the first round, give depth to LB in rounds 2 and 3 and try to sign a good CB and Safety.

Still, we should NOT fire him. If we lose Mike Nolan, we lose Norv Turner. I do not want to lose Norv Turner.
As for all of you fans who are waiving off the Nolan critics are stupid, you need to listen up and open your eyes. No one expected Mike Nolan to work miracles, but everyone expects IMPROVEMENT. We have shown NONE. The offense is better, but that is entirely credited to NORV TURNER, not Mike Nolan. From last year to this year, the only thing that has changed is the addition to Larry Allen to the offensive line and Antonio Bryant to the recieving corps. You can even throw Dilfer in their for his mentoring of Alex Smith. Our offense is not improved as a unit, it is improved because of Turner. Our defense is the worst in the NFL and we have a defensive coordinator at head coach. Our franchise has broken so many futility records for points allowed in a game/quarter/half under Mike Nolan that this team has not shown improvement, but DECLINE. All I am saying is this a forumn, look at the whole picture.
