Matt Maiocco of Press Democrat is reporting the 49ers are showing strong interest in safety Troy Vincent, who was recently released from the Bills. Vincent is free to sign with any team and the 49ers are prepared to offer him a two year deal. The 49ers are currently $7 million under the cap.

Makes sense to me as long if he’s still capable of playing… Only 7 mil left? How much is stuck in dead money still?

I agree with Davis #6 Pick. Vincent is a very intelligent player with great size. He would be an upgrade over what the 49ers have now at safety. Parrish hasn’t done much with his return, and Adams still doesn’t look quite ready. As someone mentioned in the previous entry, Roman may be the team’s best safety.
If Vincent can play FS, the 49ers can let Roman start at SS and let Mike Adams play on passing downs (as I believe his mindset is that of a corner, not a safety). This opens the door for Parrish to be traded as well, as the trade deadline is this week (right?).

Why not pick him up? He still is capable of playing for 1 maybe 2 years. That gives us time to either draft a new player and develop him or to find one in FA. I think it would be a huge pick up for this season at least. We still have a chance if our defense improves dramatically to make the playoffs. Our offense is steadly improving but our defense just seems at a stand still.

I totally agree wit sffan, Adams can move to nickel, Roman start at SS, with Parrish being traded off and then Hudson could move into backup safety and learn from Vincent since the two of them are similar in talent and ballhawking skills. I love parrish for everything he has given to the niners but I wouldnt regret trading him if someone was willing to(saints, texans, packers) who all need a veteran, run stopping SS.

Hey there was an a quick blurb on this link that the niners are intersted in CB AL Harris, I guess that would be great since i heard that last year the packers were #1 against the pass and then they brought in Marty Schottenheimers brother to coach the secondary this year and he sucks at coaching the secondary( he coached the last ranked secondaries for the last few years, packers in 04 and Rams in 05)

The seven million dollars doesn’t make tackles, stuff runs or cover passes. If Vincent can play, sign him. The money’s just sitting there otherwise. Put it on the field.
13 hours after the fact.sffan said:
Well put Bob In Pacifica. Furthermore, if the 49ers only sign Vincent for the remainder of this year, that money is freed up again at the end of the season for next year.

Word on the street is that the Pats want Vincent too, but at a lower price, plus Vincent only has a few years left so he might go for them as almost every vet does

Now a safety makes sense to you ‘Davis #6 Pick for President’, when I suggested it on “Niners Interested in Vincent” you had a buch of bullshit to say.

Put Vincent in and add more experience to the secondary.

Nice find Samra. Yeah Al Harris would certainly be a nice addition if this it were a possibility. And then I have to say this; I really do not mean to burst all of your bubbles but TROY VINCENT IS OLD. I would like to sign him to a year or 2 contract, but if this is considered a big move then damn how low we have stooped. And do not be fooled by the $7 million salary cap, it is quite decieving. It will be much MUCH more than that at season’s end. I think we are projected to have the 2nd or 3rd most cap by next year’s draft. We also need a PROVEN pass rusher (Damn it York-Nolan-McLoughlin put down the money!)

SIGN BOTH OF THEM … WHAT THE FUCK!! WE NEED HELP IN THE SECONDARY. IF WALT CANT PLAY TOMORROW … WE’RE IN DEEP SHIT. SAMMY DAVIS COULDN’T COVER MY GRANDMOTHER!! IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT WE ARE 25 AGAINST THE PASS AND WE HAVE 7 MIL UNDER THE CAP. PUT THE FUCKIN’ MONEY ON THE FIELD! GO NINERS
1 day after the fact.Dave said:
I think we should sign Vincent to a 2 year move… I would also be up for signing Al Harris, but from what I know he has a problem of getting burned a lot. So I’d want it to be some type of contract that we could get rid of easily if he isn’t able to hold up his end of the deal.
Just a couple random ideas:
– MJ the Vincent thing would be considered somewhat big, simply because you don’t come across players of his caliber very often during the middle of the season. That would be the case for any team that signs him though because of the knowledge and skills he brings to the secondary/defense.
– Also, just because we have room under the salary cap doesn’t mean that spending it will help improve our pass rush. We need players to spend that money on, that will work well in our system, and actually have the skills to contribute. Spending the money just to get people to show up doesn’t really do much good. Teams also leave some space under the cap for emergencies that might come up during the season (ie what if Nedney or someone else was injured), or if a decent trade came up. We have less than 6% of our cap space availible, which in those terms really doesn’t sound all that bad.
And again MJ, save the anti-Nolan/York/McCloughlan comments, until after the season’s over… like you said you would
1 day after the fact.MJ said:
Hahaha, my bad Dave. I did say I will leave Nolan alone. And I was never Anti-Nolan by the way, just don’t like him as a head coach as opposed to a defensive coordinator on the field, but his drafting is good. I said I would wait till the end of the season for Nolan, but I never made on promises for York. I hate that asshole.
– Dave, you said signing Vincent would be “somewhat a big move.” No, it would not be. Maybe when he was young and possessed the skills and attributes that you indicate he still has. Yes, he is a talented player but to imply he has never “lost a step” with age is ridiculous. If you saw, I read what I said you would see that I agree we sign him to a one or two year contract.
– As for your second point about the salary cap, you have reverted back to our old arguments before the season began. You think we should build our team only through the draft, I think we should improve our team by adding PROVEN talented players. If some of those players come with a hefty price tag, I would still welcome them whereas you would have a heart attack. My aspirations of improving the team is what you write off as a “quick fix” where that is not the case at all. I never said spend the money to get people to show up, that is what I think we are doing now! Instead of spending $10 million on unproven talent at one position to add depth, for example (the price he is just a number, not actual) go spend it on one proven player who will make you a contender. You spend the same amount, but it is spent correctly. Just to get theoretical here, you are telling me if we had a Shawn Merriman and a DeAngello Hall in addition to our current defense that we would not be legit? You get a pass rusher who will limit a QB’s time to throw and one of the best CB’s in the league to get what is thrown too early. Those players are obviously not available (Abraham and Law were this offseason though) but I still will argue that a proven talent makes a team, whereas drafted players develop to MAYBE one day becoming good. The cap is there to be SPENT, if we still had DeBartolo we would have 3 more superbowls by now and I will bet you anything on that.
So YES, SPEND THE DAMN CAP. Do not go back into salary cap hell, but get PROVEN TALENT. We have had the same argument many times Dave. The difference between us is simple. You see the 49ers team like a chess game before your eyes and think it has to be played slowly in hopes to win 10 years from now. I see the 49ers team as a business that we buy into when we purchase 49er jersies, merchandise, clothing, and game tickets. Without their fans, the organization is nothing. That salary cap, the money that exists there, is out of the pocket of the fans (which falls into the pocket of your beloved York.) There is the difference between us, I want the team to do everything it can whereas you accept it for what it is. Frankly, I want a superbowl now whereas you want to defend a team you will openly accept for a losing season.

I agree with you MJ, for the most part. I too want to win now and don’t want a top 5 draft pick every year to build the team. Yes, we want to build through the draft but in the meantime we need to have PROVEN players to help the rookies develop. This is a cycle that will build the team up and keep it there for years to come. So we do need to spend more money on proven players so that we don’t have to throw in rookies every year. Especially while we have the money (no thanks to Eddie) and can spend it wisely without using it all completely up.

TO SAMRA THE JACKASS:
3 days after the fact.Hey samra you dumb fuck, whos the idiot now? Didn’t you say the 9ers don’t play a 4-3, and would never change their defensive scheme? Well you stupid fuck what defensive formation did they play today? Let’s see Douglas, Fields, Adams, and Young with Smith, Ulbrich and Moore at LB. What formation is that? Well what do you know they tried a new defensive strategy for this game, and you were trying to say they wouldn’t change their scheme for John Abraham when they just did it for the fuck of it. Teaches you to keep your stupid fuckin mouth shut idiot.
Samra said:
I never said that they dont play the 4-3, which u can go back and see, But when we do play the 3-4, where what would we have done with him, sit him on the bench?

Man Roman got hurt, i hope its not bad, however if it is then we might persue Vincent a little more agressively. Does anyone know if Lance Schulters retired, cuz he was pretty good too last season, with i think 6 INT.plus he’s alot younger than Vincent

That’s not my point samra. When I first made the comment sayin that we should have tried to get Abraham your exact words were” #1 DICK SLAPPER YOU DON’T KNOW SHIT ABOUT THE NINERS, WE PLAY A 3-4 WHICH CONSISTS OF 2 ENDS AND ONE GIANT NT.” That was damn near word for word what you said. You tried to make me seem like a stupid fuck, and made it seem like I don’t know what the fuck is goin on with my team that I been followin since I was young buck. Then I responded back sayin if you have ever heard of changing defensive strategies. Then you fired back actin like hell would freeze over before the 9ers tried the 4-3. As soon as I seen them playin that formation today I just laughed, anyhow you know where I’m comin from now, have a good one.
