In the wake of a 41-0 trouncing by the Kansas City Chiefs, talk is intensifying in league circles that Niners defensive coordinator Billy Davis will be fired at the end of the season, if not sooner.Davis was hired by Mike Nolan in February 2005, after Nolan was named the 49ers’ new head coach.

On a more serious note, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen. It then wouldn’t surprise me that Mike Singletary would take over as a defensive coordinator. My question is this: two seasons have gone by now, and in each of those two, Singletary was considered a “potential” head coach or coordinator. Why was he never hired? I doubt it has anything to do with loyalty to Nolan, as loyalty doesn’t pay the bills.

He would have been a waste of money, because he couldn’t do anything here either. And it has nothing to do with the front office being cheap. If that was the case they wouldn’t have given both Smith their contracts. Davis his. Resign Spencer and so on…the front office maybe cheap when it comes to stamps, water, and belt buckles, but they always pay the amount on contracts the GM’s have asked for.

I’m all for winning it now, as it is frustrating to watch this team play the way they played Sunday. However, Nolan has neglected the defense for the first two years of his tenure, and I doubt this is by accident. Rebuilding a team doesn’t take just two offseasons, especially one that was as crappy as Erickson/Donahue left this one. Expect the defense to get bolstered big time this season, as contrary to the draft picks of the past two years, this year’s draft will probably be primarily defensive.
