Source: NFL tells 49ers that officials made mistakes
The NFL admitted this week to the 49ers that they blew at least three calls in the game against the Eagles, a league source said on Friday.
Niners coach Mike Nolan showed some restraint Friday when I asked him about his communication with the league office.
“I got answers back,” Nolan said of the questionable calls the team turned into the league office for explanations.
When asked what those answers were, Nolan turned to 49ers director of public relations Aaron Salkin and asked him, “Where should I stand on this?”
Salkin reminded Nolan that he would be subject to a fine if he divulged any information. “You’re not supposed to report on it,” Salkin told Nolan.
“Conversations between the officiating department and the clubs are confidential,” NFC information manager Michael Signora wrote in an email after I left him a voice message seeking comment.
Of course, the confidential admission from the league that referee Terry McAulay’s crew made some mistakes should not come as a big surprise. TV replays clearly showed the errors.
Nolan made it clear that whatever the league told him, the officials did not cost the 49ers the game. But the calls in question resulted in 207 yards in the second half of Sunday’s game:
—The 49ers challenged the ruling on the field that Eagles DT Mike Patterson was not down after recovering running back Frank Gore’s goal-line fumble. Replays appeared to show Patterson, with possession of the ball and both knees on the ground, in contact with 49ers tackle Kwame Harris.
The correct call would have given the Eagles possession on their 2-yard line. The source said McAulay did not have access to a replay angle from the end zone that would have enabled him to overrule the call on the field.
—The 49ers had gotten to within 14 points early in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles bumped the lead back to 21 points with a touchdown. The big play was QB Donovan McNabb’s short pass to TE Matt Schobel for a 60-yard gain.
On the play, Eagles WR Reggie Brown clearly blocks 49ers FS Mike Adams, who was in man coverage against Schobel, before the pass was caught. The illegal pick play was not called and the play stood.
—On the 49ers’ next possession, WR Antonio Bryant’s 49-yard reception to the Eagles’ 8-yard line was nullified when 49ers RB Michael Robinson was called for an illegal chop block. The 49ers failed to get any points from the possession.
Although Nolan did not address the play Friday, he spoke about it Monday at his press conference. A chop block is when a defensive player is in engaged with a blocker and another blocker makes a block below the waist on the defender.
“On that play, Michael is chopping, and after he’s chopping him, then Jonas (Jennings) falls on top of the guy,” Nolan said. “That’s not a chop, from my understanding. So, I’m going to get the rule explained to me.”

Yeah, there was another call they forgot to mention too. McNabb threw a pass to Greg Lewis (I am not talking about when he got hit and lost the ball for an interception) and the pass hit Greg Lewis in the arms and fell into Sammy Davis’ hands. They ruled it incomplete, but I thought he had his hands under it and that it did not hit the ground.
That game should have been much closer. Nolan should have gone for it on 4th and 1 just before halftime too. If we scored then, I think everything would have been different and we may have won.

When I watched they 98 yard fumble return, I was thinking, “How could he not be touched when he was in a pile of players with both knees down when he picked up the fumble” but the refs were so stupid that they couldn’t get it right. This isn’t the first time we’ve been screwed on calls.. This shit has been going on for years. Nobody cares about correct calls when we are considered losers, but it’s pretty hard to win when even the refs are playing against you.

this is what happens when all the refs are over 70 years old.

This fuckin pisses me off. Fuck the REfs, and most importantly Fuck the NFL. They hate it when a player celebrates, or even talks a little shit(AB to that cardinals cB) but the best they can do if we get screwed over a game is secretly say sorry. What the fuck is this. They should give us a compensentary draft pick or something to make up for the fucked up calls. All i got to say is Fuck the Rodger Goodell or what ever that bitches name is.

That long pass play was a pick. The refs hardly ever call that, so I wasn’t surprised that they didn’t catch that, but the 98-yard return was terrible. It’s really hard to believe that no one in that mass of humanity didn’t touch him.

Yeah Mike Patterson got up off his freaking knees in a huge pile of players and the refs that sat around and watched him get up and start running… And because the dumbasses didn’t blow the wistle, Vernon Davis ended up breaking his leg trying to chase him. Dumbshits.

I didn’t have to get confirmation from the league … I knwe they screwed us when I saw the replay. The Eagle backs were blocking at the legs all fuckin’ game and the moment we finally get a big play to Bryant … they call that bullshit. But … no excuses! We got our asses kicked. We have to start faster and stop making so many mistakes. Gore … hold on to the fuckin’ ball … V. Davis … catch the fuckin’ ball (some time on the pine might do him some good) ... S. Davis … make the fuckin’ int. (second time this season that he dropped an easy int.) I also want to see more of Chad Williams … he seems to make big plays by getting to the qb.

Agreed with ninerfan.
Relax guys, these things happen. They’ve happend for and against the 49ers and just about every other team in the NFL. Considering it was a game they had almost 0 chance of winning anyway, and came back strong from them, it may turn out to be a good thing.
I was much more pissed off last year in the loss to chicago on the 102 yard fg return when there were 2 or 3 illegal blocks just entirely missed because of the spacing of the refs.
All I have to say about the goal line screw up is, why haven’t they put a camera looking down on each endzone in every stadium yet. It’s chump change for the NFL and could solve many an issue…

We have a good chance to get a win today. I can’t believe the spread is 7 points with us being the underdog. Thats crazy.

Being an Eagles Fan doesn’t matter here. I agree, the refs suck. We definately gave the Giants game away, but…. Again, the 70 year old refs couldn’t keep up with the long ball plays and the BLEW a Brian Dawkins Interception which would have ended the game prior to a FG that tied it. So.. I’m not sure which plays would have helped in this game against the Eagles, it was kind of already decided, but I do agree with you guys. The refs SUCK.
