Hey, just stoped in to see how Justin's contract is going. He is my second cousin and I have never met him, but his Dad and I are cousins. I dont know if you guys keep him or not, but having watched him play since he was at Alabama, he will not have any problem finding another team to start with. The guy is a stud. I look forward to seeing the 49's play here next year in Carolina. You guys have an away game in Charlotte. I will definately be there. I would love to see him here in a Panthers uniform. You guys have a pretty decent team going and it would be silly to break up the O line. He is one of the best guards out there. Average guards are available, but a really good guard deserves the bucks. I think he is a really good guard.

MJ: You make good points but theres one major flaw in your Hicks arguement. Battle is just as good as Hicks at that job and Walker/Robinson/Williams has shown some flashes at the KR/PR spot. We need not overpay for a guy who is a #3 back and a special teams player.

For example, look at Terry Jackson! He was a vet on our team, great special teams player, and a backup RB/FB...and he got cut. A similar thing may happen with Hicks.

Again, I would be happy to resign these guys and keep them...but the NFL is a business and you have to factor in the quality vs price ratio. I do think Adams can be a star for us and I am pretty sure Nolan will resign him for more than York would like because it lets us focus on other positions in the draft.

I also doubt Smiley gets traded because you dont ruin a good thing like our O-line. But again, look at it as a business decision. You can get Snyder in the starting role who would be cheaper yet may be almost as good as Smiley and getting an extra 1st or 2nd to reamp our defense...or you keep Smiley and sacrifice a talented player in the draft. It would be a tough decision if that would ever occur, but I think Nolan may bite since he had 2 1st rounders this past draft.

I definitely understand your points, but anythings possible and my gut tells me...it could happen!

S-A, one last rebuttle. When it comes to Hicks, it is not about his runningback abilities it is his kick returns so far this season and the fact that he is a #3 back. I will bet you all anything that the money he is demanding is more than fair, it is just that York will not compensate him. This is not about Hicks, Smiley, or Adams. It is about a bunch of decisions made over the last few years that have caused the "building process" to start over 2 or 3 times. You can NOT build just through the draft, you need experienced players. It is ridiculous to draft a guy, have him for a few years, and when he gets good we are not willing to pay him what he deserves? Julian Peterson and Andre Carter went goodbye and look at our defense now. Sure, it's improving (and I think Adams is one of the bright spots) but we would have been better off keeping those two players and paying them what a normal team would. I am not suggesting salary cap hell, I am saying build through the draft AND by signing veteran free agents during the offseason. York will not do the latter, so the least we can do is keep the experienced players we have.

ted berkowitz, yes Mike Adams did make game saving interceptions. I was actually at the Texans game last year sitting in the second row right behind the 49ers bench. It was a nice day (that was the day Smith threw his first TD too.) As for Prick Newton, where is he now? Everything he predicted was bogus. Haha, he sure was a Prick.

Reread my post and youll find why I we would get rid of Smiley, MJ. I hypothetically stated that if he wanted out or his contract demands were too high, that we could get a 1st or 2nd rounder for him and we already have a replacement for him in Snyder. I would like to keep Smiley, but it only depends on if Nolan and all will want to keep him with his contract demands.

If we were to get a 2nd or 1st round draft pick, that could give us many options. We can trade back into the first round and snag a hole on the defensive side, or stay where we are and see who is the best player available. I would hands down take a trade like listed below and loose Smiley:

R1: Merriweather - S
R1: Carriker - D-line immediate starter
R2: CB
R3: OLB

But thats an extreme hypothetical situation. Again, I like Smiley and I hope he stays, but dont be suprised if he is gone.

Ted, I dont deny the talent that Adams possess, but he wouldn't really be a starter on any other team. Consistancy is key, and he hasn't shown it yet. There is still a full season ahead, but its just my opinion that we may upgrade the secondary through a 1st rounder and free agency. But I respect your viewpoints as well, its just my opinion and gut feeling.

M.J., why would we pay a premium on Hicks when we can replace him with someone cheaper and more versitale. Robinson will prove he is a legit #2 behind gore, and 3rd RBs are typically project players or average vet RBs. Again, a KR is replaceable since we already have players who can fill that hole.

I am not opposed to signing these guys, dont get me wrong. If we can get an economic efficient contract that both sides are happy with, then I am all for it. Adams/Hudson would be an upcoming FS duo in the NFL. Smiley and Adams are critical if we don't have a sure replacement for them.

But if we can upgrade our defense with Merriweather, Carriker, and a CB while addressing the other needs in free agency like signing Hamlin and Thomas...then why not!!!

The owner is not stingey??? HAHAHAHAHA!!! "dude," you obviously know nothing. Yes, Nolan and Mccloughan were given the power by York, but Nolan has said repeatedly that he uses all the money that York alots him. YORK IS A PIECE OF SHIT. Nolan can do what he wants with the bidget York gives him.

S-A, your response made me cringe. You want us to let Smiley go for a 2nd rounder? YOU CAN NOT BUILD A FREAKING TEAM ONLY THROUGH THE DRAFT, DAMN IT WHY ARE PEOPLE SO STUPID??? So me humor you and assume we do get a 2nd round pick for Smiley. Then what? The player we get is a rookie with no experience who will be signed for more money than he is worth since he is a second rounder. By the time that player is any good, York will not dish out the money to keep him! As for Mike Adams, do not judge him my the stiff-arm he took from Westbrook! That is ridiculous! He is a play-maker and I want to see him stay. "LOL," you said he has 4 interceptions last year. Do you know how many games he started last at his position last year? Check it out then let us see if you are still talking. And Maurice Hicks, he is not the golden child but he is better than some unexperienced 4th or 5th rounder! Have you guys been watching him on special teams? He returns are insanely good. Look at his average yards per return, comparable with the best in the nfl. We may not need him as a runningback, but he is a good returner and can be used as a #3 back.

ted berkowitz, it is true we never really agreed in the past. But have you noticed since that prick newton jackass we have pretty much been on the same page? Flippin' York......
