49ers signed CB Shawntae Spencer to a five-year contract extension through 2012.
Smart move by San Francisco, who reportedly locked up the improving corner for “only” a $6 million signing bonus. Exact terms aren’t available, but Spencer’s salary will top out at $3.2 million in 2012, which isn’t much. Spencer was one of the few surprise picks by former GM Terry Donahue that worked out well.

Thank god, i was fearing that Spencer would pull a JP on us, and it looks like we’re still at our old pinny pinching ways. Well at least we know that Nolan isnt going to let everyone walk away, just the bitches.

Penny pinching? Do you want us to get in salary cap hell again? Why pay more if he will sign for less. Shaun your post makes you sounds like a real thinker. I like what we are doing. We need to save room to sign picks and build for the future. The niners have been doing everything right lately.

hey Davis #6 Pick for President, have u ever heard of a holdout. Perhaps Dieon Branch might sound familiar. The thing is i see it as player should get paid what they deserve and when they ask for it the fucking media makes the player look like an asshole. Im not saying pinny pinching is bad, however if Spencer decides in the future he deserves more, he wont get it from us cuz we pinch those damn pennies.

Hey Shaun you don’t know what you are talking about. The 49ers are smart with their money but when it comes time to pay up they do. Alex Smith and Vernon Davis are perfect examples of spending when they had to while Antonio Bryant is a perfect example of being smart with their money.

Louis,
actually you don’t know what you’re talking about. The Niners had to pay big bucks for Smith and Davis due to the simple fact that they were #1 and #6 overall picks. Bryant had baggage coming over to this team, so he couldn’t market himself as a true #1 threat a la TO. Finally, this proves that the Niners actually know what they’re doing now. I can’t remember the last time we took a young promising player and paid him 2 years before his contract was up to lock him up for his whole (productive) career.
GO NINERS

Yeah you guys are right- we’re penny pinchers. We should just give everybody $30 million dollar contracts and the superbowls will start rollin in.

Draper,
The 49ers had BOTH Alex Smith and Vernon Davis signed before training camp. Teams that have a hard time paying up usualy don’t get their players in on time even though they have to pay up.
