Three good things I took out of this game. #1 They actually came out alive on the road, something we haven’t seen much of in 4 years. #2 Alex Smith played like an average quarterback, maybe not up to first pick snuff yet, but still good to see. #3 Even with more injuries to the injury prone line, the offense looked good, and it’s alot easier to watch a bad team when the offense can move the ball

In general, this is still a 5-11 team give or take a game. The defense is the worst in the NFL, by alot, defensive line was getting dominated on a majority of plays. As long as one of the internal young receivers can improve a bit, the only offensive neccesities over the next few years looks to be the line.

On defense however we are all about to suffer. They just look awful. Need to get a corner to go with spencer, replace both safties, 2 new defensive ends, and a new defensive tackle/nose tackle.

All in all a promising game for the future! Tough games coming up though may not get that first win for a few weeks.

Even though it was called back, great to see Smith make an accurate deep throw.

Okay Nick, what would Alex Smith do that made him an average QB this game??

He did everything right, should have had another 50 yards in passing and a TD because of the deep one called back and other dropped balls. When the 49ers picked him, this is the type of game i hoped he would have every game. He didnt even get close to turning it over. I dont rember once seeing it tipped by a Cardinal.
I dont think the Alex Smith is in the clear right now, but i think this game he improved a ton. Im not saying 49er fans dont have to worry about anything but I do think that Alex played the best game QB could in this game.
Nick please respond because its a monday and its such a depressing day…I really just want to laugh my ass off your bullshit on Alex.

Calm down scott, I’m not out to offend or insult anyone. I very much enjoyed Alex’s performance.

Alex’s rating for the game was 88, of quarterbacks that had at least 16 attemps ( there were 26 ), that ranks 12th. About an average performance ( though after last year it does seem pretty amazing ). He wasn’t really asked to do anything, nor should he be, nor will he be. Please don’t confuse a good performance with a pro-bowl performance though. He missed a few reads, made some bad decisions in trying to force balls into short covered check downs, wasn’t overly accurate ( 23/40 ), and had a sure interception dropped by zona early in the game.

As I said it was a good performance by Alex, I was really excited on the deep pass even though it was called back.

Let’s hold off on calling him a sure thing ( though i think he is ) for a few weeks, he is still young and will still take his lumps.

You can take what you see out of the performance, and I’ll take what I see, in the end neither will matter.

Wow! Rollin’ with Nolan, folks! This may be a very enjoyable season. Thanks for the highlights, please keep them coming!

Similar to Nick, I’m not here to offend or insult anyone either, but there is one thing that most people that criticize Alex Smith forget. Nolan didn’t draft him to be our “savior” or to be Joe or Steve. Nolan doesn’t envision him to be some quarter back that will light up the skies like Peyton Manning and such.

From what I’ve understood since Smith was drafted, Nolan only wants him to manage the game. Nolan wants him not to make mistakes, and just put the team in a position to win. Supporting that were statements this week where Nolan believes the team needs to run more to be effective. Not every team (or every QB) is going to throw for 250+ yards a game, or have almost 5,000 yards in a season with 30+ TD passes.

I like what Smith has shown so far this season (preseason and regular). He’s obviously not the wide-eyed kid he was last year. He’s showing he has more control of the offense, and in turn is earning the respect of his offense. He still has the issue with staring down his receiver, but it wasn’t AS prevailent yesturday.

For the first time in a long time, I had fun watching an ENTIRE 49ers game, and actually look forward to next week. I hope their defense fixes itself as the weeks go by… other than that, Go Niners!

[Note: Kwame Harris digs himself further and further into the hole. I would seriously trade him for a box of Cracker Jacks (or the gum beneath your show) right now.]

Thanks for being a gentleman about what i said to you. I get pissed when people down play Alex’s play. I think he would have been 26/40 though if it werent for a few dropped passes and add that TD so his rating should have been like a 99?

I have never like Harris “sffan” but think if we had traded him. That would mean Snyder would be starting on one side because Jennings is out and then some horrible tackle would replace Harris.

Yesterday’s game reminded me of the watching the 2000 49er team: Gore played the role of Charlie Garner, Cards OFF was the Ram’s of 2000, and our DEF gave up the big passing plays – continually. They were up and coming and never look defeated (unlike last year).

Long season! And to put it bluntly: at least we’re not the Packers! At the end of the 3rd quarter, you should have seen all the cheeseheads marching to their cars. They looked like 49er fans at the end of the 3rd quarter when their team is getting whooped. Sad to see. That is why I am the guy harassing you when you leave the ‘stick at the end of the 3rd quarter: you embarrass us all!

Alex Smith did play awesome. Hopefully it isn’t some one time only deal and he keeps playing well throughout the whole season. The main problem was of course the defense, which did show some change near the end of the game. It was a good learning experience for our DB’s because they went up against two of the best WR’s in the league. They need to get hyped up on those 3rd down plays. It is there chance to get off of the field and get some rest, so make the play. So my overall, the offense did great, especially Alex Smith. But the defense needs to step it up.

Alex Smith played well enough to win. For the first time in a regular season game he looked like a QB. He made smart decsions and didn’t make any huge mistakes. Bottom line … We’re not the kind of team that can make mistakes and expect to win … like Sammy Davis dropping an interception on a ball that hit him in the chest (single plays like that have a major impact) ... not to mention fumbles (Gore and Davis), dropped pases (Davis), and penalties (fuckin’ Kwame Harris)! The defense played ok and did a nice job against Edge; however, the d is still a major concern. However, if our offense can continue to progress, it will help our d a lot.

I hate K.harris.. we need to bench or trade him. I was at the game and it pissed me off when the deep pass to bryant got called back cuzz of harris. reminds me of last year with all of the holding calls on him. The defense needs alot of work but, alex looks good and with good coaching around him he will be fine.

correct me if i am wrong but isn’t this the second year in a row where one of our rookies scores a touchdown the very first time that player touches the ball in a regular season game? last year otis amey and this year vernon davis.

I definitely liked what I saw out of Smith. He looked better and had more zip on the ball on some of those passes stepping up in the pocket than he had on a single pass last year. He’ll be a good QB. I’m not expecting Manning, but he’ll have a couple pro bowl visits.

And Gore? Fucking awesome. Get some more weapons around him… beef up the line and another WR, and that guy will win ballgames by himself. Imagine if Beasley was there….

Defense needs some work. No arguing that.
