Matt Maiocco is reporting that the 49ers are most likely not going to try and re-sign DT Anthony Adams. He’ll be allowed to test the free agent market. He also mentioned these players as players most likely to get contract extensions. RB Frank Gore, RB Maurice Hicks, OL Adam Snyder, G Justin Smiley and CB Shawntae Spencer. Nolan has stated he likes to try and lock up players with around 2 years left on their contracts.

why? Is his attitude poor? Even if he’s not the greatest DT, he won’t be that expensive to extend a couple years or at least to try.
I’m still rattling my brain as to why they didn’t franchise peterson if they knew they weren’t going to be agressive on the free agent market. What good is 10 million in cap space?
They do realize that at some point they are going to have to replace these players with free agents, we can’t have a team of rookies and “rounding out their career” players.
confused look
I’m not expecting them to compete for a playoff spot for a couple years. But empty cap space in today’s NFL is kind of insulting to the fans spending money to see the games or buy the merchandise..

just remembered, they probably didn’t franchise him because the cap hadn’t been upped yet. Still.

Petersons cap # wouldve been over $10 million had they taged him- guess they felt it was too much. If I was GM I dont think I would have paid him that much for one year after the year he had last year.
I saw Mcloughan talking about A Adams the other day and he said he respects Adams and Douglas because they play their asses off every game but they just arent big enough to play on the line in a 3-4. I dont think they got anything against them but you need bigger guys up front in a 3-4 defense.

thats too bad, i really like double A, but if we are going to stick with a 3-4 we do need bigger guys to plug up and eat up space.

Can we atleast see how Peterson recovers from his injury before we continue to doubt how the club handled the offseason? Peterson hasn’t really played up to his caliber the last 2 years and still hasn’t fully recovered from his torn Achilles.
Did you really want to franchise a player and pay $10 mil a year+ for a player who didn’t really even want to be here? I mean come on, we’ve given JP more than a few reasonable offers over the last few years and despite the fact that he came really close to a career ending injury, he still didn’t want to sign a reasonable long term deal.
It’s not entirely JP’s fault, but he does have control over who his agents are. The Postons (who also represent Ty Law, Orlando Pace, Charles Woodson, etc), are notorious for wanting ridiculous contracts. When Orlando Pace had a few franchise tag / hold out years in St. Louis after demanding a ridiuclous contract, he realized that he wanted to stay there, and he fired his agents. JP could have done the same thing, had he really not been all about the $$.

Eventually they’re going to have to start taking chances with free agents and using the entire salary cap again. It’s part of the NFL.
Maybe they were right with Peterson, but it’s not like they turned around and got anyone else. I’m just a little frustrated on the eve of another 4-5 win season of mediocrity in a league where parity is supposedly in rule.

I AGREE WITH TAKING SOME RISKS WITH SOME FREE AGENTS … GET SOME FUCKIN’ BALLS AND BE AGGRESSIVE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SEAHAWKS MADE AN AGGRESSIVE ATTEMPT TO SIGN BRANCH … LUCKY FOR US IT FAILED, BUT THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A HUGE PICK UP FOR THEM! FUCK THE 3-4 … ADAMS AND SPOGOGA WOULD BE A NICE TANDEM AT TACKLE IN THE 4-3! I BELIEVE THAT THE 3-4 IS WEAK … ESPECIALLY AGAINST THE RUN. DALLAS HAD A FIELD DAY ON US LAST WEEK.

Dave, you said Peterson wanted to leave the team. That is untrue, he only wanted to leave the team if they did not meet his price (And the 49ers have not met anyone’s price since York became our owner; anyone big namer anyways.) They even had an article about Peterson emptying out his locker, and how he was disappointed the 49ers would not tender him an offer like the Seahawks gave him. We offered a LOT less. We should have kept Peterson. Yeah, he was not his super self the last 2 years but he was the heart of the defense next to Bryant Young and was coming around.
We should keep Adams. Damn, Nolan really wants to build this team to be HIS team. All players with any experience are getting kicked to the curb.

Nick, this is what I am talking about. It is truly sad. With all the cap space and draft picks we have, the organization should push with all it has. This is about football to us, but it is a business to the team and it’s owners. People argue that we should not go after big name players and just follow Nolan’s plan. I disagree, and I have that right because we are the ones sending money to his boss, owner of the 49ers (York), which pays his salary. Your quote says so much yet goes on deaf ears.
It is sad you feel it will be a few years before we get a playoff spot. All the people I argue with on here are in the same boat. I have been a fan for 22 years, I have seen it all. Only recently have fans demanded so little of their favorite team, and accepted it instead of opposing it.

Nick, what I meant is I see where you are coming from. I do not think we have a shot with the current team either, but I think we have the cap and draft picks to allow ourselves to BECOME ABLE to make a playoff run NOW. Nolan wants to rule the team, and York wants to save his money.
