The 49ers have signed NFL Europe’s MVP Gibran Hamdan, who was recently released by the Seahawks. Here is a little background on Hamdan, he was was allocated by the Seahawks to NFL Europe, where he led the league in passing and was league most valuable player with the Amsterdam Admirals. He was originally a seventh-round draft pick by the Washington Redskins out of Indiana in 2003. Here is what head coach Mike Nolan had to say about Hamdan.
“Hamdan is a young guy that has a real strong arm,” 49ers coach Mike Nolan said on the team’s Web site. “He is more of a pocket passer than anything. We wanted to bring him in to get a look this week.”

I’ll take him over Jesse Palmer and Cody Pickett anyday.

i don’t understand this move…i mean we’ve dedicated ourselves to alex smith, we have a veteran qb behind him, and we have the bachelor…so why another qb??
DON’T WE HAVE BLARING NEEDS ON DEFENSE???

The Bachelor is gone Jer. Anyways, I like Hill.
1 hour after the fact.I say keep this guy and Hill and drop Dilfer.
Dilfer has taught Smith everyone he can by now. Lets face it, he sucks and has no potential.
MJ said:
Forrest, have you lost your damn mind? Dilfer is the best quarterback we have on our team, and a superbowl quarterback at that. He is one of the few bright spots we have. Should Alex Smith ends up being a bust (I hope that is not the case) then Dilfer will step in and we will start winning football games. Dilfer is a stud.
I like this quarterback (Hamdan.) I get a good feeling that he has potential. Kurt Warner came out and became famous with an arena football background. Hamdan has NFL Europe experience, where he was an MVP with insane completions and yardage. I would like to keep him and Hill if possible; cut Palmer.
Jer, I totally agree with you though. This move is not really solving anything at all. We need to make moves to help out our defense and we need them as soon as possible. I still do not see what we are doing with all these draft picks we keep acquiring.

Sorry, I was fucked up when I posted that. Actually….I’m still fucked up and Dilfer sucks balls.
Did you see him scramble and then try to act hard core like he has something left? He’s done, he serverd his purpose in traning camp.

HERE WE GO AGAIN … PICKING UP SOMEONE ELSE’S GARBAGE! I BET NOLAN AND HIS CREW ARE JUST SALAVATING OVER THE WAIVER WIRE AS OF LATE! I DON’T GET IT … NOLAN SAID HE MAY ONLY KEEP TWO QB SO IT MAKES SENSE TO CUT PALMER, BUT THEN WHY BRING IN ANOTHER QB (ESPECIALLY SINCE NOLAN SAID THAT THIS NEW QB WON’T PLAY FRIDAY)! SO HOW THE FUCK IS HE GOING TO MAKE A TEAM CARRYING 4 QB’S …. WHICH MAY ONLY KEEP TWO (THREE AT THE MOST)? OH I GET IT .. HE’LL COMPETE IN PRACTICE FOR THE NEXT 3 DAYS AND PUSH OTHER GUYS … ADD COMPETITION … AND MAKE SMITH, DILFER, AND HILL BETTER! BULLSHIT

!! AND HOW THE FUCK CAN NOLAN SAY THAT THE TEAM HAS ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST IN BRANCH WHATSOEVER??? DID HE NOT WATCH THE TAPE OF AN OFFENSE THAT ONLY GAINED ROUGHLY 87 YDS IN THE ENTIRE FIRST HALF AGAINST THE BOYS? OUR FIRST UNIT DIDN’T SCORE UNTIL MID THIRD QUARTER AGAINST THE BOY’S SECOND UNIT! I CAN UNDERSTAND NOT BEING ABLE TO TRADE FOR BRANCH DUE TO THE ASKING PRICE … BUT HOW THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST?

The reason Hamdan is here and Palmer is not is because Hamdan is eligible for the practice squad where neither Hill nor Palmer are. Hence, with Hill winning the battle with Palmer for the #3, the team needs a third QB for practice and in an emergency so keeping Palmer would have made no sense.
By making this move, it assures they will have that 3rd QB AND frees a roster spot for another defensive player on the 53.
And in an emergency, they still have Michael Robinson if all else fails.

Well, here we go again, pick up another team release. Coach Nolan, wake up and smell the coffee….If this QB is so great MVP then why was he released?? Think and stop picking up trouble and really look good at Smith. IS Smith going to make it or not. Will the team be last place in NFL again?
9 hours after the fact.dj432 said:
mike,
did you bother to read my post just above what you just put up?
That explains the very sound reason the team signed Hamdan. There is no intention this guy would ever see game day activity. Rather it is a strategy to assure a practice team/emergency QB WHILE FREEING A SPOT TO PICK UP A DECENT DEFENSIVE PLAYER WHEN OTHER TEAMS CUT TO 53.
If a defensive player becomes available, look for Hill to be cut to make a roster spot for him and Robinson becomes the emergency QB while Hamdan remains on the practice squad. That is what this whole domino game is about.
I can’t make it any more clear to you than that.

Thank you very much DJ and actually bringing some knowledge here. It’s annoying when people get all pissy over crap they know absolutly nothing about. What you said is exactly what Nolan had in mind. Great move IMO.

This is just a move to see who is better, to bring competition to pratice, Nolan is not afraid to cut ANYONE, the best players make the team. This guy wasnt Seattles trash, they just didnt have a roster spot for him.

dd,
I’lll say it once again. Read the posts above you before you go off on tangents like this.
The very move Nolan made here is to set up the possibility off creating a roster spot FOR A DEFENDER after the cuts to 53.
So…look for Hill to get a good amount of time tomorrow night, if for no other reason than to make sure Smith and Dilfer stay healthy for the league season. Now, with Hill on the roster along with Hamdan, Hamdan will certainly be cut and hopefully, moved to the practice squad after he clears waivers next Wednesday.
THEN, if a defender that Nolan wants becomes available, and a roster spot is needed, Hill is cut, and Robinson becomes the #3 QB, where it is hoped he won’t be needed.
NOW, you and I, and everybody else that wants to see more defensive help, will get a DEFENSIVE player (or perhaps a WR) get signed that would not have been available had the team not played this little shell game.
I don’t mean to be a d!*K, just trying to say that in matters like this, you need to give the guys who see the players everyday, and DO HAVE A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE, a little credit for knowing what they are doing.

You know, I tried to stay quiet about this but I can’t help but to say something about it.
First of all what is this obsession with jesse palmer I mean he wasn’t making that much noise to be keeped on this football team, what is it because he’s the quote on quote batchlor that’s why everybody’s obsessed with dude?
This dude hamden seems like he’s a sleeper now I do agree with vaughn another QB?, when we need another receiver and corner and god knows what else we need going into this season.
But I wanted to see jesse palmer do good too but not because he is the batchlor and niether should anybody else because they was talking about it on ninerstalk that they were upset that he was waived and it sucks ass and all of this nonsence LET IT THE FUCK GO!

Thanks DJ432, that makes a lot of sense. This was a smart move afterall. It is like having Alex Smith, Trent Dilfer, and Hill (if we keep Hill) while getting Hamdan without using up a roster spot for adding Hamdan. I like it.

we might as well list arnaz battle and michael robinson as our backups and rasheed marshall…let those guys battle it out to be the backups..forget hill and hamdan…

lb,
You don’t get it.
The team needs a 3rd QB to run the scout team. Battle and Robinson must be left free to work on their primary responsibilities, which are being a WR in Battle’s case, and RB in Robinson’s case. During game week’s Hamdan’s job will be quarterbacking the scout team. You don’t want to take Battle especially out of the flow of learning the game plan. Robinson will also need lots of reps to learn his running and blocking assignments.
The scout team QB will NEVER participate in regular team drills. All they do is pretend they are the QB for the upcoming opponent. Either Palmer or Hill COULD have done that but neither of them are eligible to be on the Practice Squad, and Nolan, correctly, would prefer not to take a regular roster spot for a “scout team” player. That will be Hamdan’s job.
