Eenie, meenie, miney, mo. That appears to be the direction head coach Mike Nolan is heading in finding the starting 11 for the 49ers defense. After another poor performance this past Saturday, Nolan is shaking up the defense, and moving back to a 4-3.

“The terminology won’t change,” Nolan said. “We will just feature more defenses than the other. That’s the beauty of the 3-4. If you go the other way – from a 4-3 to a 3-4 – you may have problems.”

Ninth-year veteran strong safety Tony Parrish, who has started all 121 NFL games he has played in, is not guaranteed a starting job less than two weeks before the Sept. 10 season opener at Arizona. Parrish and fellow first-teamer Mike Adams are being pushed for their jobs by safeties Chad Williams and Mark Roman.
