There is no doubt we are lacking in talent on the defense. This is only Nolan's second year and he has done a damn good job of replacing the offensive offense he inherited. I fully expect him to do the same to the defense in the upcoming drafts and free agency. It is also important to remember this is the preseason so Nolan and company are playing a very vanilla defense.

hey ninerfan4,

Adams had about 2/3 of a season back there last year. Hardly makes him a vet. Parrish is a vet but had never player with any of those guys that were back there. When Spencer was hurt he lamented that they were JUST BEGINNING to get some chemistry. That doesn't sound like a confident vet to me.

Lawson is a rook and Soap had only a partial season last year.

Douglas was an overpaid FA. BY got very little time.

The others you named have some experience but some of them like Adams, are no more than backups.

As to Rector, he was their leading receiver through PS. He WILL make that team.

Don't get me wrong. I am not in love with the defense but let's not ove-react either. Dallas is a very good team. Most pundits I have read pick them to win the NFC East.

At bottom, we all know that the defense will need a tremendous draft next year to get back where it needs to be. IMO, only Spencer, Ulbrich & Lawson are sure things for next year. Smith may be getting worn but may still have 1 more year. Sopoaga looks like he could be the NT we need but after good games against Chi & Oakland, it would be pushing it to say he broke even last night. The rest of them will be good backups to better players coming in.

COME ON DJ432 .... JAMIACA RECTOR (WHO PLAYED AGAINST OUR FIRST STRING) ... 7 GRABS FOR 80 YDS ... IS NOT A VET! HE MAY NOT EVEN MAKE THE COWBOY'S FINAL ROSTER ROSTER. LAST NIGHT ... OUR FIRST STRING D HAD MANY VETS PLAYING ... DOUGLAS, YOUNG, ADAMS, ULBRICH, SMITH, PARRIH, HARRIS! SO DON'T GIVE ME THIS VETERAN TEAM AGAINST ROOKIES AND SECOND YEAR GUYS CRAP! I AGREE THAT THE OFFENSE IS IMPROVED AND SHOULD CONTINUE TO PROGRESS, BUT OUR DEFENSE IS JUST FLAT OUT HORRIBLE! WE CANT' GET ANY PRESSURE ON THE QB ... AS A MATTER OF FACT ... BLEDSOE IS STILL IN THE POCKET. IF BRIAN GREISE WOULD HAVE STARTED WK ONE ... HE WOULD HAVE LIT US UP JUST LIKE BROOKS AND BLEDSOE DID. I'M SICK OF IT AND I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE!!! WE HAVE NOT HAD SOLID CORNER PLAY SINCE THE DUO OF ERIC DAVIS AND DEION SANDERS! WE HAVE NOT HAD A DOMINANT PASS RUSHER SINCE CHARLES HALEY! I LOVE ULBRICH AND SMITH, BUT THEY PALE IN COMPARISON TO NORTON, PLUMMER, AND WOODALL! WE NEED SOME TOUGHNESS, SOME CHARACTER, ... THIS D IS SOFT!!

The only thing I agree with in the threadstarter's post if that Michael Robinson shows more than Hicks. Hicks gets 1st call senority - nothing more.

As to the rest of it I have 2 points:

1. I am surprised that more people do not understand that in practice games coaches are trying to create individual matchups to see what individuals players can do...and once they have that information, they can begin to select which players will be on the final roster. That is priorities #1 thru #3. After that they want to look at how certain combinations of players work together, and finally, get continuity on each side of the ball.

2. Dallas is a very good team. They owned Seattle prior to stomping on the 49ers last night. Based on last year's performance, does that mean Dallas goes to the Super Bowl this year?

We don't know the answer to that question but we do know that Dallas was better in all ways...but we also have to recognize that they had VETERAN players going against ROOKIES AND 2ND YEAR GUYS, on both sides of the ball.

So come on people. I am as frustrated as the rest of you at the pathetic records of the past 4 years. But to expect more than we saw last night, against the opponent they played just not realistic.

Let me say that again: It is not realistic to expect than what we are seeing right now.

PREDICTION:
By the 4th game of the year, barring injuries, we will see a much more efficient offense, and a defense that will be respectable against the majority of the opponents they will fact.

I am staying with 7-9 for the year.

hey prick newton
even though your a prick i like what you mentioned above about robinson, i feel the exactly same way, i am a hicks fan too and i do want to see robinson in there with the first teamers. i do believe he will be a solid compliment to gore. i just wish i felt the same way about smith, i like him and all and he is a super smart kid, but i dont whether to be patient with him or drink a bottle of nyquil with a side of rufies and drive off a cliff!

p.s. your a prick!

No one- go back in my articles and find one place where I've said any of that. You can't because I didn't. If Im caught up in the hype then why did I write this article bashing the Niner defense? I havent heard one thing about Robinson, and thats why I felt compelled to mention him. Albeit only one line. When you asked why I mentioned him, I provided you with good reason, and then even said I wanted to see him with the first team offense before offering a more solid take. I'm starting to think you never even read the article. Look up at my second response. See those ass bandits I was talking about? Theres your sign. -Newton
