The Ashley Lelie trade talks will not die, well at least I will not let them. After the trade of Kevan Barlow to the Jets the Niners are in the position to have three fourth round picks next season. Take that and add in the comp picks coming from most likely the losses of Julian Peterson and Andre Carter. The Niners could end up with anywhere from four to five fourth round picks, with the comp pick for Peterson most likely bumping up to a third based on his performance this season.
Of course last week Nolan stated the team is not going to trade for Lelie, but at the same time he told Kevan Barlow he wasn’t going anywhere. And we know how that turned out. So my question is this what is taking the team so long on pulling the trigger. Take one of the picks you received from the Lloyd or Barlow deal and give that to the Broncos. Even if you have to give a third to get it done, you still have enough fours to move back up in the third come draft time. I’d be much more comfortable with a receiving corps of Bryant, Battle, Lelie, and fill in the blank, then Bryant, Battle, and fill in the blanks.

How about a corner? Anyone want to give us a corner for a fourth?

Man. Let – it – go : ). Lelie will not be a 49er and thats a fact.

I live in Colorado and have watched Lelie every week. We don’t want him. He is a physically weak receiver, avoids blocking assignments and will not go down the middle…he is more like Brandon Lloyd in that respect. At best, he will be a #3 receiver for the Broncos, but his stock is dropping fast. I don’t know why so many 49er fans want him. Have you seen him play?

All i have to say is that one of the biggest sleepers on the team is Gilmore..keep the picks

Colorado49er is absolutely right, Lelie is awful. The only thing he can do rather well is use his speed to run deep go routes. Otherwise his route running is piss poor, he isn’t consistent, he isn’t willing to go over the middle and make the tough catch, and has a poor attitude. All of those things make him about the worst pickup you could make for a team that needs a reliable and durable #2/#3 WR since Battle hasn’t been able to shake the injury bug.
We aren’t really in position to compete for a playoff position let alone a Super Bowl this season, so please stop trying to force ways for us to fill in every little need with crappy and overrated players like Lelie. We can draft players 1000 times better than Lelie and Barlow next draft and use the picks we acquired to trade up for more 1st day picks.
I know its tough as a fan, because building through the draft takes a while. In the long run it is the best strategy.

Some more comments about Lelie.
1) He has been on the block for several months now…why has no other team traded for him? a. The Broncos are asking too much (3rd Rd 2007 pick) b. Other teams don’t look at Lelie as a #2 receiver either.
2) His holdout with the Broncos is stupid and reflects a poor attitude. Right now, the Broncos could care less if Lelie returns. Lelie is unnecessarily ruining his career…he should be in camp busting his butt…rather than sitting at home whining about losing his position on the depth chart to Javon Walker.
Why would we want someone like this? Maybe for a 7th Rd pick…but only if he begs to come and play for the Niners…and promises to bust his butt.

colorado49er i dont know we as 49er fans can be picky and say taht lelie would have to beg to be on this team(who has a potential to go to a whopping 6-7 wins this season!)the reason why its so hard for us to get free agents is bc we suck and teams know this so we have to pay even more money for them. If we can get lelie and strengthen up our offense why not!!Get another target for smith. Some of you actually think gilmore can fill in as the 3rd postion wr and that battle can be the 2nd. Well i would agree with that if battle could ever stay healthy but he cant. Atleast lelie has stayed healthy thus far. I will say i’d rather have talent on the defensive side, but right now we cant be picky get more talent on offensive side of the ball and help our team out in any way possible and get lelie.

9erfan10000: While I understand where you’re coming from with “we cannot be too picky”, we still can’t just throw picks down the drain. Remember who we drafted in the third round last year? Now I’m not saying that we’d be able to get a Gore-caliber player every year in the third round, but third to fourth round picks are the best time to pickup “sleepers”, or people you may see talent in that other teams are overlooking.
Being an advocate of Ashley Lelie is like being an advocate of Brandon Lloyd, just maybe not as bad. If the guy plays like a baby and acts like a baby, he’ll probably be just that… a baby.
Nolan and McCloughan have taken chances this offseason: we signed an aging (on the verge of retirement) offensive lineman, a wide-out who had past attitude problems, and gambled that J.Peterson/A.Carter won’t do as well as the Seahawks and Redskins are betting they will.
We don’t need to wideouts that could potentially cry to be #1. Battle and Gilmore are fine. Remember, we essentially have a third WR in V.Davis… he just doesn’t necessarily have to split out wide (or in the slot).

I don’t disagree with adding another WR to our roster. Just not Lelie…for the reasons I’ve stated. Deion Branch and perhaps others would be better additions.

Branch would be nice but you know he’s not going to want to come here, plus he’s going to cost to much with the money he want’s.

There are going to be wide receivers cut in the next week who will be the equal to Lelie. I think that Gilmore is going to be good, and if Davis and Smith can be together on what routes he’s running I agree with others that the TE is going to be the really deep threat on this team. Remember, we’ve got Eric Johnson as a target, too.

Erickson, let the Lelie talk go. WE DON’T NEED LELIE! Converting Delanie Walker from TE to wide reciever (he was a reciever he was converted to a TE) would do it. He is better than Battle and Gilmore if you ask me. However, we do need another big reciever with experience. Javon Walker was the biggest bargain of all, we should have got him but that’s over. I say we wait it out for a better receiver than washed up Lelie. Amani Toomer is rumored to be traded, I say we pursue him over Lelie. That, or wait it out for bigger reciever. This team keeps avoiding big name players and we, the fans, are the ones who suffer. Screw that, it’s time to make some impact.

Whatever happened to the Porter rumors? The guy is way better than Lelie and last I heard he wanted out of Oakland.
