Update: 08.21.06 – Barlow has passed his physical and the 49ers will receive a 4th rounder for Barlow. No more, no less.
__
Matt Maiocco is reporting that the 49ers have traded Kevan Barlow to the Jets.
Apparently, those talks with the Jets got serious in a hurry. The 49ers announced just minutes ago that RB Kevan Barlow has been traded to the Jets for an undisclosed 2007 draft pick. Coach Mike Nolan has already spoken with Barlow. He has to pass a physical for the trade to become official.
“This is a great opportunity for Kevan because of New York’s need at running back,” Nolan said in a statement released through the team. “Kevan has been committed to our program and done well. With the depth at running back we felt we could make this move.”

The writing has clearly been on the wall, and if I were Kwame Harris and especially Eric Johnson, I’d have to be wondering how long I’m gonna be around.
And I do agree with AD, this better at least be a 4th round pick or better.
Go Niners!! Rolin Wit Nolan!!

If any of you Barlow loving fools can’t see that he is just an average NFL runner, you better start watching some game film of Barlow & stop playing video games all day! Barlow was a 3rd round pick but he ran the ball like a timid 7th round pick! I’d be happy with a 5th round pick for Barlow. He averaged barely over 3 yards a carry the last 2 years! Barlow has no balls & he’s frickn boring!! Gore is a stud!!

Barlow has always been trash, I am glad he is finally out of SF. Frank Gore and Maurice Hicks will tear it up this season and thats that. The era of weak ass players is coming to an end in SF, Nolan is in the process of purging those who under achieve, play half speed, and don’t produce.
1 day after the fact.Aaron said:
I have been pulling for Barlow for years but I will be happy if this turns out to be a first day pick. After seeing Gore produce consistently behind the same line Barlow failed to look better than average.
I know Barlow had some big plays called back and I think he will produce in NY. I just think Gore is better and Alex seems to like him in the flat.
If we don’t trade this pick for a proven talent Nolan and McCloughan are awesome in the draft. I really feel this was a win for both teams.

used to be a big barlow fan, but the guy needs a change of scenery. gore will be hurt by midseason. hicks isn’t the answer. good move though for rebuilding, but it might make this year a little rough. if gore can’t stay healthy this will help get a top notch back in the draft, although i think this pick will go to denver.

this was a long time coming and i’m surprised it took this long to get barlow out of here…we have a solid starter with frank gore (injuries aside) and good backups with hicks and Robinson…barlow had 1 or 2 good seasons with us but he never proved himself as a legitmate, dependable back. I applaud this move by nolan…personally i woulda taken a high school tennis player for barlow, but a 2007 draft pick works just as nice
rollin’ with nolan!

This is a very shrewd move by the 49ers. It says 3 things:
1. Michael Robinson is developing well in camp and can be trusted as the #3. That is good news.
2. Nolan did not want a traffic jam at running back.
3. Nolan chose a draft pick because the Jets don’t have anything of equal value that fits a need issue now. Also, the Jets are as bad as the 49ers were last year which means that this pick should be a good one.
Now, Barlow will be the main guy in New York, and if he puts up decent numbers, the pick will be good. If not, well, he wasn’t going to be worth much as the 2/3 guy for the ‘9ers anyway.
Nobody knows what the performance incentives might be but…if he plays in 14 games and over 1,000 yards, he might be as high as a #2, and given where the Jets will be drafting next year, this could be a very good deal.
As to the Lelie deal? Denver won’t go for it because if Barlow flops the pick might be a #6 or #7, and Shanahan won’t take that chance.

Last time I checked, Nolan’s title is “Head Coach”, not General Manager. I love Nolan, but people like G-Man are quick to give Nolan all the credit. I’d bet you Nolan deep down is AGAINST this trade, but he doesn’t make the calls. This is a ballsy trade considering we don’t have ANYONE that is close to proven behind Gore. But I’ve been calling for this all preseason to I guess i’m a hypocrit. CRAP, I don’t know what to think of this.

I dont think Nolan wanted to get rid of Barlow. I think this was a move to keep Terry Jackson on the roster. With Barlow, Gore, Hicks, Robinson, AND Jackson in the backfield it was too crowded. Jackson’s experience in the league and special teams play made him too valuable to cut and he seemed to be the odd man out. Not to mention hes a better pass-catcher and blocker than the other RB’s left on the roster.

It is a FOURTH round pick, not conditional on what he does in NY. Barlow was a third round pick. It is ok because if the Jets are a as bad as predicted it will be a high fourth. While I will be happy with the extra pick and will be glad to see M robinson get the opportunity, I stil believe Barlow has the size speed and talent to be sucessfull. I think the Jets got the better end of this one

What are the cap ramifications of this trade? Anyone know? Getting Barlow’s 5 mil (highly overpaid) off our cap number for next year would be great. That might have been another incentive to trade him.

Here are the cap numbers from our friends at niner cap hell:
2006 = 2.5M Base salary saved, 1.92M signing bonus proration (already counts) = 2.5M savings (580K overall savings from before since SB already spent)
2007 = 3.25M Base salary saved, 3.84M Cap hit (2007+2008 signing bonus prorations) = 590K loss on cap space
2008 = 4M Base salary saved = 4M savings

I don’t care if no one here agrees with me, but Nolan is an idiot who is both helping our team and destroying it. I have come to the conclusion that the man can draft, but that’s as far as it goes. Why the hell do we need draft picks for NEXT YEAR??? I want players this year! Hell if this means Nolan will be around next year I will damn near lose my mind; I am looking forward to him getting the boot. This clean house thing is going too far. If we lose EJ then that will just be the cherry on top of the cake that I want to smash into Nolan’s defensively oriented, can’t manage the time clock and never goes for it on 4th down even when we are losing with a minute left, mind! The guy is KILLING US, no one wants to play for him because no one wants to be a “Nolan Guy.” Hell the definition of “Nolan Guy” these days is as loose as Paris Hilton. AAAAAAAAAAAHHH!
Barlow should have been traded, but for a player this year. If we go after Lelie with that 4th round pick we acquired it will add insult to injury. We had a chance at big name players during the offseason, but Nolan went after garbage (you see the Raiders exhibition?) and when I say that I do not mean the draft, because the draft + Larry Allen + possibly Antonio Bryant were awesome moves. That is where it stops, though. No big name players from free agency, no trading for GIFTS like Javon Walker, hell we should have got Ty Law to fix a HUGE problem our team has but noooooooooooooooooo. And if anyone tells me we are rebuilding I am telling you to go screw yourself because I am sick of hearing it!

THANK YOU THAT’S WHAT I SAID WHEN WE TRADED BARLOW THAT WE SHOULD HAVE GOT A PLAYER, AND I WAS SAYING THE SAME THING ABOUT JAVON WALKER AND TY LAW.
YOU SEE WHEN YOU HAVE BEEN NINERS FANS AS LONG AS WE HAVE AND KNOW FOOTBALL NOT TO SAY NOBODY ELSE ON HERE HAVEN’T BEEN NINERS FAN AS LONG AS WE HAVE AND NOT KNOW FOOTBALL THEN WITH YOUR AND MY ANALOGY IT ALL MAKE SINCE.

i highly doubt they’ll get rid of EJ…on the other hand, if they for whatever reason decide to, we still have vernon davis and a name that many will soon become familiar with…delanie walker…not to say EJ is expendable, but it’s not like nolan’s cutting players just cuz he didn’t draft ‘em…he gave these guys that we don’t have anymore all of last year and this year in training camp to prove themselves and obviously they haven’t. He wants team players, leadership, special teams guys, and more importantly: A RUNNING BACK THAT CAN GET PAST THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE
I mean give Nolan an co. some credit…he’s cleaning up erickson’s mess that no doubt set us back at least 3 years…give it time, u’ll all see this was a great move in the end…especially come draft time
14 hours after the fact.MJ said:
Jer, llisten to yourself. Your last sentence says “....escpecially come draft time.” Dude the season has not even began yet! Are you already accepting this is another failed season and good ol’ Nolan will “build us” through the draft again? I am not having that! Second of, yes Delanie Walker is an awesome player. I thought so before the Bears game. He should not be a TE though, he should be a wide reciever which would boost up our receiving corps and add a huge, fast offensive threat. As for VD, the guy will eventually be great but as of now he has talked more than he has played whereas EJ has experience under his belt. If we trade EJ it is a mistake, and a big one. Please keep in mind that our biggest weakness is at quarterback. Yes, Smith WAS a rookie last year. Sure, even Troy Aikman had a horrible first season, but Aikman was not the #1 pick overall in his draft! Before VD, Bryant, or any reciever we do add (probably not a big namer knowing Nolan) there is still Alex Smith throwing to them…...and you know what fine I will give the kid another year. However, this building through the draft crap ensures 2 things:
1. Nolan comes back next year. This is a scenario I am not wanting.
2. We get inexperienced players who, when they finally do become good players, we will cut because penny pinching York will not pay them what really contenders will pay.
Unfortunately, instead of getting angry and demanding better of your team I have noticed people are just settling for what it is, like this team has always been shit. (AND IT HASN’T!) Instead of wanting veterans, I hear ridiculous arguments like “bringing in Ty Law (For example) will only take away opporunity for our young inexperienced cornerbacks. We need to let them play.” Are you idiots? We want to win and win now. Rookies behind veterans build great players. T.O. is what he is because he was a kid that sat on the bench when Rice played. Mar Bulger was good because he learned behind Kurt Warner. Hell, even the Raider’s Lamont Jordan who punished our linebackers last Sunday is good because he was behind Curtis Martin. So what do the 49ers do? WE GET A FREAKING 4th ROUNDER FROM NEXT YEAR

I have also been a 49er fan for a long time. And I would like to see things get better quickly. However, your post is not realistic.
First of all, Kevin Lynch of the Chron reported way back in February that there would be very few FAs who would want to come to SF because the franchise had a reputation for being “cheap.” He predicted that any player that did come here would demand a premium of up to 30% above what other teams might offer.
Now I don’t know anymore than you do what teams offered but I do know that the 9ers were interested in several players they were not able to sign for unstated reasons.
Second, in making trades, the other team has to want what you are offering. In the Lelie deal, Denver didn’t need a running back and they wanted a higher pick than he was worth. It was the equivalent of demanding a #2 for Barlow – it wasn’t going to happen. The Jets wanted Barlow but they had no one that would have improved the 49er team. They had offered Derek Strait to Cleveland in the Suggs deal, and it is assumed they would have been willing to send him here. However, Suggs is an underachieving 4th round pick who COULDN’T KEEP A STARTING JOB WITH THE JETS. Would you want a guy like that? We just dumped Rumph because he wasn’t going to make the team. Strait was Rumph with different cloths.
Back in April there was talk here about Koren Robinson. Nolan was asked about it and he said they weren’t interested. No we find Robinson in big-time legal trouble and will probably face a 1 year suspension for his DUI, because it violates his probation.
I could go on…
Third, what player left in “house cleaning” that you think we should have kept? And, been able to pay what other teams were offering and still be under the cap?
Finally, it was acknowledged around the league that the 49ers were one of the very weakest of the weak last year. They had NO talent. Do you really think we should have kept any of the dead wood left over from the Donahue/Erickson days?
Man, read your post before you hit send. You have passion for your team but your points are just not realistic.

i’m not already looking forward to the draft, i’m simply stating that by the time the season’s over, we would have already forgotten about kevan…what’s his name….secondly, i never have and never will count the niners out of the season until the last game is played. and 3rdly, i hope nolan DOES come back next year, i mean do all of u really expect him to turn this franchise into a superbowl contending team in his 2nd year ever as a head coach with all the young ripe talent he is slowly watching develop? as long as we finish with AT LEAST a 6-10 record, nolan deserves 1 more season…if we don’t make playoffs next season, or even become wild card contenders, THEN i say he deserves the boot

Barlow is a bum. We dont need that kind of underaachieving attitude on this team. Yes he has talent, but after his big payday? What has he done? Im glad the jets took that salary. Gore will be a very good running back and with mo and m. robinson thats good enough. We should trade Eric Johnson strait up for lelie. We have V.D and Walker. Remember this is E.J final year on his current contract, why not get something now for him instead of letting him walk. Besides with E.J out of here thats more plays for walker.
