Matt Maiocco is reporting that cornerback Mike Rumph is no longer with the 49ers.
The 49ers on Monday announced a trade that sends Rumph to the Redskins for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs, a second-round draft pick in 2003. Jacobs caught 11 passes for 100 yards and no TDs last season for the Redskins in 15 games.
[Rumph Traded for Jacobs] – Matt Maiocco
Jacobs profile heading into the draft
Positives: Good route-runner with above-average speed and quickness … Shows no wasted motion in his release and uses his hands effectively to defeat the press … Runs precise routes, sinking his hips properly and showing a sudden burst through his routes … Can create space in his separation with his hip swerve and wiggle … Plucks the ball with his hands and has the agility and leg drive to punish defenders after the catch … Has an exceptional burst in and out of his breaks … Shows the toughness needed to combat for the ball in traffic … Has outstanding work ethic and is very quick to digest plays.
Negatives: Needs to do a better job coming back for the ball … Does not make proper body adjustments going up for the ball and appears more comfortable catching passes thrown right at him … Can pluck the ball away from his framework, but still tends to body catch … Will show willingness as a blocker, but lacks technique and power to consistently face up.40 time: 4.42

Im pretty disapointed, I thought he was really turning into a good corner before he injured his hand in that sunday night game against the rams in ‘04.
13 mins after the fact.He played pretty shity on friday but I think thats natural considering he hadnt played the position since ‘04. He wouldve been good as our nickel back.

The Washington boards are ecstatic they got “something” for a guy that had little chance to make their team this year. To put that in perspective, Brandon Lloyd was 3 spots higher on the depth chart than Jacobs.

what’s the deal with the 9ers doin a couple transactions withthe Redskins and then 9ers gettin the shorter end of the stick both times. Fuck I bet this guy Jabobs would have been cut in a couple weeks and we just coulda signed him, fuck it whats done is done.

So I guess this means no Lelie.

Hey Rock, this is like the Woods-Davis trade. Both were likely to get cut. Last I looked, we benefited from that one. Rumph was going to get cut. He couldn’t even tackle the other night!! Tackling was his strength!! We got potentially “something” for nothing, just like with Davis.

I think the problem with Rumph is that with the rule changes where corners can’t jam as much or whatever, he is just to big to be effective. And he doesn’t have the vision to play safety.
I’m pretty sure Rumph wouldn’t have made the team. So this trade doesn’t really matter unless Jacobs makes an impact.

its a good move we save money this way

at least I don’t have to hear about rumph anymore. Guess I should pray that spencer and davis stay healthy.

Nolan knows what he’s doing. Shit look how good we have improved so far.

i think we should have at least waited another game or two to evaluate him, if after that he showed no signs of improvement then we could’ve traded, he still provided depth and does have starting experience.

sure he miss some tackles but WTF if Rumph was going to get cut we should have try to get a pick rather than picking up a BUMP that will ploblably get cut…. Remember Middlebrooks… with a pick we could have at least pick up someone who we wanted….

Bad move, Nolan. Bad move.

Don’t kid yourself, Rumph has no trade value, unless for the straight-across deal with a BUMP. Maybe we have save ourself a few buck in this exchange, if this is Nolan’s intention, n hope some expert here will expalin to us if it is true or not.

Andre carter j.j. stokes kwame harris Mike Rumph Raushun woods Shall I continue? Just another 1st underachiever. HAs been injured quite a bit. Not off to a good start this year. WE got someone in return that maybe would like a new start as is Rumph. Not that I dont like andre or harris they just live up to #1 picks
3 hours after the fact.filthyrich said:
thats havent lived up to #1 picks

Good for nolan and co. keep gutting donahue’s picks. rumph was a below average corner, and in the nfc west you need better corners than him. he’s had plenty of time and opportunity to improve and has gotten worse.
4 hours after the fact.RW said:
We needed to get rid of Rumph anyhow; he just wasn’t working out. We do not need another #3 receiver, we already have a few.
Also, DW should be working solely as a WR.

You know why Rumph got moved to saftey last year ? Because hes a shitty corner. Do you know why he moved from safty to corner this year ? Because he was a shitty safety. You all are smart enough to do the math on this one ….. At least we got something other than a cap hit .

Good trade….rumph will not make the roster by opening day, so why not trade for jacob see what he can do..

If guys show heart, like Eric Johnson, I’m sure Nolan & co. don’t have a problem. What becomes evident is how BAD Donahue and Erickson really were at managing and coaching at this level.
People labeled as “busts” on one team can still turn it around given another chance (fresh start) in new system. Rumph was likely to be cut, but we got someone who might thrive here, or at least make a positive contribution. Rumph may do well in Washington, but it doesn’t mean he would have done the same here.
and MJ, it’s not just Nolan making these decisions…
5 hours after the fact.Mike Rumph said:
I don’t know why i got traded. They say I can’t cover anybody, and they say I can’t tackle. Don’t know what they are talking about. I always try to go for the big hit when I tackle. I just lower the shoulder and go for the boom. Who wants to see a wrap-around tackle anyways? People want to see the big hit. So what if two, three, even four guys run right past me? No big deal.

rumph has been one of those donaghue disappointments since day 1. He would have been cut, we save money trading him, and jacobs will be our fourth wide out.
CB depth chart:

2 Harris
3 Davis
4 Johnson
5 Hudson

4 missed tackles from a veteran is unacceptable. Rumph was a joke anyways. This was a good move, because it instills fear throught the entire roster. It let’s them know they better play at there best, or fear losing their position on the team…Isn’t Nolan’s method of improvment working for the team so far???
14 hours after the fact.LOU said:
Great deal, Nolan. Rumph was going nowhere fast and I know what they say about Florida WRs but if Jacobs can stay healthy, he can make some plays. Last year in his one chance to start he was ineffective for the Skins but let me ask you this, who wasn’t with Mark Brunell throwing the ball? Plus. Gibbs is doing the same thing as Nolan trimming the fat from the previous staff. Jacobs will contribute in San Francisco
15 hours after the fact.Vin said:
While I liked Mike Rumph, the consensus theory is correct: he wasn’t going to make this team. Nolan and McCloughan knew this and were naturally willing to listen to anyone who actually wanted him.
The Redskins called, the ‘Niners plucked a guy that the ‘skins were willing to trade. Both sides think they made out on this deal, and as sausagebrown mentioned above… both may.
Jacobs was an elite receiver in college, and has always supposedly had a great work ethic. With our current WR corps, he could work his way into 4th, or even 3rd (if Battle doesn’t ever get 100% healthy). Jacobs could possibly contribute, Rumph wouldn’t have here.
Good trade: move something that we know is “dead weight” and receive something we can at least see what happens with.

Personally, I don’t like the trade. Corner is our weakest position. Even if he did suck, we need depth. I hope our corners can stay healthy this year unlike the past decade it seems like. People have made great points about Rumph not contributing at all and they’ve been correct. But I still don’t like this trade. We got some other mediocre receiver and that’s the last thing we needed. I’d rather take a very underachieving corner for at least one more year rather than trade for a receiver we’ll never hear of once the season starts.

Hooray
Rumph needed to get cut. At least we got some fodder for somewhere for his shitty ass.
19 hours after the fact.Moses said:
We have Bryant. We have the oft-injured Battle. Then what? Gilmore who has been a project and Williams who is a rookie.
Jacobs should be in the mix for the #5 WR spot with McAddley, et. al.
OTOH, Rumph sucked and always sucked and was just another marginal talent made “big” in college by the surrounding help and low-level competition. Like it or not, the guy had cement feet, stiff hips and was terrible at taking angles in space making him ineffective as a Cover 2 corner or safety. Rumph had no future with this team and, honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Redskins cut him too.
