The 49ers released their first official (unofficial) depth chart of the summer this week. Here how it looks (along with some comments):
Offense
WR - Antonio Bryant, Rasheed Marshall, Derrick Hamilton, Marcus Maxwell, C.J. Brewer. (Marshall has been up and down, Hamilton has been down, and we’re still waiting to see Maxwell’s tremendous potential.)
LT - Jonas Jennings, Patrick Estes, Bobby Harris. (In reality, Adam Snyder would move to LT if Jennings went down again.)
LG - Larry Allen, Ben Sobieski, Sam Wilder. (Actually, David Baas is seeing the bulk of the snaps at this spot as Allen’s backup.)
C – Eric Heitmann, Jeremy Newberry, David Baas, Tony Wragge. (Consider it a minor miracle if Newberry is able to play again. He certainly will not be the starter.)
RG - Justin Smiley, David Baas, Tony Wragge, Tavarus Washington. (Snyder is splitting time here, as he is in some form of competition with Smiley, who is expected to start.)
RT - Kwame Harris, Adam Snyder, Harvey Dahl. (Snyder’s versatility might be his downfall, as Harris is planted at this spot; Dahl is looking good and is challenging for spot on the roster.)
TE - Eric Johnson, Vernon Davis, Billy Bajema, Delanie Walker, Terry Jones, Onye Ibekwe. (Still don’t see anyway Davis will not start, but both Johnson and Davis will play big roles; Walker appears to be a lock.)
WR - Arnaz Battle, Bryan Gilmore, Jason McAddley, Brandon Williams, Otis Amey. (Battle has be healthy to hold onto his starting job with Gilmore and McAddley doing some good things; Williams will make the team, but it doesn’t look good for Otis Amey; no question why the 49ers remain interested in Denver’s Ashley Lelie.)
QB - Alex Smith, Trent Dilfer, Shaun Hill, Jesse Palmer. (Hill or Palmer? It’s still a toss-up.)
RB - Kevan Barlow, Frank Gore, Michael Robinson, Maurice Hicks, Terry Jackson. (All of these guys should make it; Jackson’s might not play a snap of offense, but he’s valuable on special teams.)
FB - Chris Hetherington, Moran Norris, Zak Keasey. (If team keeps Jackson, they might opt for just one fullback.)
