Davis Won’t Go Overboard
By Erickson | at: 9:56 am, filed under: 49ers News. After catching a 15-yard sideline pass from Alex Smith and squeezing into the end zone, the rookie tight end from Maryland rose to his feet, spiked the ball, faced the Cowboys’ fans, arched his back, and spread his arms.
Later, Davis acknowledged he was imitating Owens. And the next day, coach Mike Nolan said he would discuss the celebration with Davis and instruct him to “act like he’s been there before.”
Davis said he has talked to Nolan about his celebration, but he said the coach has not told him to tone down his act.
“He just asked me what kind of celebration was that?” Davis said. “I was telling him that I was doing that because when Terrell Owens played Dallas, he stood on the star and put his arms up. So I just kind of did that to kind of make fun of him doing that.”
Davis said he enjoys other players’ celebrations, but only to a point. He said such recent sideshows as Joe Horn grabbing a cell phone after a touchdown, or Chad Johnson performing CPR on the football went too far.
Niners Sign Hamdan
By Erickson | at: 10:29 pm, filed under: 49ers News. The 49ers have signed NFL Europe’s MVP Gibran Hamdan, who was recently released by the Seahawks. Here is a little background on Hamdan, he was was allocated by the Seahawks to NFL Europe, where he led the league in passing and was league most valuable player with the Amsterdam Admirals. He was originally a seventh-round draft pick by the Washington Redskins out of Indiana in 2003. Here is what head coach Mike Nolan had to say about Hamdan.
“Hamdan is a young guy that has a real strong arm,” 49ers coach Mike Nolan said on the team’s Web site. “He is more of a pocket passer than anything. We wanted to bring him in to get a look this week.”

Eenie Meenie Miney Mo
By Erickson | at: 10:25 am, filed under: 49ers News.Eenie, meenie, miney, mo. That appears to be the direction head coach Mike Nolan is heading in finding the starting 11 for the 49ers defense. After another poor performance this past Saturday, Nolan is shaking up the defense, and moving back to a 4-3.
“The terminology won’t change,” Nolan said. “We will just feature more defenses than the other. That’s the beauty of the 3-4. If you go the other way – from a 4-3 to a 3-4 – you may have problems.”

Seein’ Red
08/27/06
I’m not one to panic at anything that happens in pre-season, but by the time January rolls around, this pre-season will have seemed like a Super Bowl season. That is to say, if what I’m seeing continues on into week one. Besides having an offense that takes longer to start up than .com’s homepage, our Niners have a defense that seems worse than last year. Hell, they seem worse than Dennis Ericksons defense.
Now before I break this down on you, I need to get some things nailed into your little pea brains. Number one, I live on the Eastern side of the U.S. so I have to avoid the score all day and stay up to catch it delayed on NFL Network at twelve A.M. (Who, much to the contribution of my suicidal tendencies, still sometimes run the final scores on a ticker below the screen in the first quarter.) Number two, normally I have to watch the opposing teams home network broadcast the game. So I inevitably have to mute it to avoid hearing the sloshy slurping sounds coming from the booth. Number three, in order to watch ANY of my beloved Niner games, I have to purchase Sunday Ticket. And in order to get the Sunday Ticket, I have to purchase Direct TV satellite, which last night went out with five minutes left in the fourth quarter. So much of this article is coming to you via frustration. But so much more than frustration it comes to you in truth. Even if you don’t want to hear it.

The 49ers (1-2) had only 78 yards against Dallas’ starting defense, then Alex Smith threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to rookie tight end Vernon Davis against the second-string defense in the third quarter.
Smith left after that drive, having gone 9 of 14 for 93 yards with a touchdown and an interception on an underthrown deep pass to former Dallas receiver Antonio Bryant. Another series fizzled when Smith overthrew Davis twice in a span of three plays, the second one going so far off target that it was obviously a miscommunication.
“We didn’t play well,” 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. “Their first group outplayed our first group. It looked like last year where we’d run around trying hard but things wouldn’t go our way. We’d like to start seeing better results.”
Nolan said his first string didn’t get enough plays, mainly because Dallas ran over San Francisco’s defense.

Associated Press is reporting that the New England Patriots gave holdout wide receiver Deion Branch a week to seek a trade and negotiate a contract with another team.
We have calls out there trying to see if the Niners are showing any interest in Branch. We know they had some interest in Lelie, but didn’t want to part with what the Broncos were asking. Most likely landing Branch would cost more than what the Broncos were looking for, so with that the Niners may not be interested. Also the money Branch is looking for deal wise might be in the Niners best interest. If we hear anything we’ll pass that info along.
Battle to Start Against Dallas
By Erickson | at: 6:24 am, filed under: 49ers News.Arnaz Battle has yet to start a preseason game for the 49ers this summer, but Mike Nolan said that could change Saturday in Dallas.
Battle has practiced extensively this week, and Nolan said the receiver’s infirm right knee appears to be responding well to new treatment. Battle suffered a bone bruise and a strained ligament in the joint last season and has dealt with swelling.
“He’s a lot better than he was.” Nolan said. “I actually thought today was the best he’s looked (this summer). There wasn’t much hobble.”
With Battle limited in practice, Bryan Gilmore has started opposite Antonio Bryant the past two weeks. Nolan said he’d decide today whether Battle or Gilmore will start against the Cowboys.

Hitler: “No Gripes”
By Erickson | at: 7:06 am, filed under: 49ers News.“It’s unfortunate he said what he said,’’ Nolan said. “Look it, my son tells me when I discipline him that he hates me and wishes I were dead. I’ve heard it probably 100 times. I still love my son, and do I think he really hates me and wants me dead? No, but he said it.“Is that the way Kevan feels? I enjoy Kevan. I think he’s a good guy, a good kid. He did a good job for us. I have no gripes with him, none at all.’‘

Barlow Rips Nolan
By Erickson | at: 6:56 am, filed under: 49ers News.Former 49ers running back Kevan Barlow lashed out at Coach Mike Nolan and the direction of the franchise in a series of phone calls to the Contra Costa Times on Tuesday, two days after being traded to the New York Jets for a 2007 fourth-round draft pick.
“Nolan just doesn’t know what he’s doing. He’s a first-time head coach with too much power,’’ Barlow said from New York. “He has too much power as a first-time head coach. He walks around with a chip on his shoulder, like he’s a dictator, like he’s Hitler. People are scared of him. If it ain’t Nolan’s way, it’s the highway.’‘
Two phone calls later, Barlow softened his stance and blamed some of his statements on the emotional whirlwind he endured the previous 48 hours.
“I was kind of harsh on him, saying he’s a dictator. That’s bad. Saddam Hussein is a dictator,’’ Barlow said three hours after his initial call. ``I was speaking on emotion.’‘
Barlow called Nolan ``a liar’’ for trading him.
“It was dirty. He had no respect for me or the organization,’’ said Barlow, 27. “He doesn’t know about the 49ers way, and that’s too bad because even his dad (Dick) was coach of the 49ers. Bill Walsh set the standard there, and he ain’t living up to it.’‘
