Thanks Erickson. From the article, it sounds like he wants to be the man, and I still don't understand why he thinks the niners competition will be different. Manuel is obviously more established, so my guess is that he thinks he could start for this team... and if he does, it is a good pickup by Nolan and Co.

sausagebrown...I found an article in May that Roman was unhappy with them bring in Marquand Manuel.

05.06.06 -- Green Bay Packers safety Mark Roman said Saturday he asked for his release when he found out the team had signed free-agent safety Marquand Manuel to compete for his starting job.

Roman wasn't specific about his complaint with the Packers, but according to a source, Roman felt the signals he was receiving from the club just before the Manuel signing were that he was going to be one of the leaders on defense. Soon after a discussion with the coaches about his position, he found out about the addition of Manuel.

Roman said he felt he deserved an explanation from general manager Ted Thompson about the mixed signals.

Immediately after Manuel was signed, he asked the team for his release and they refused. He was told he would be in the mix for a starting job.

We are steadily making improvments this year. Roman is a definite plus, as our secondary was horrible last year, especially with Parrish out. Hopefully we don't get burned deep again...ala....the Dalas Cowboy game last season. with all the improvments with the injections of youth and veterans this season, I believe we can at least get 7 wins....I'm strollin wid Nolan baby!!!

Man there is some stiff competition at the safety position. But at the end of it, I hope that Mike Adams at least has a backup spot, I like his speed after he makes interceptions.

Anyone know why Roman was released? News says that he had a beef with mgt because they brought in someone else (a rookie?) to challenge him, but from what I have been reading, Nolan's method is to have EVERYONE fight for their position... that competition will bring out the best in individuals and create a competitive football team. So, is Roman up for the challenge? I will hold off judgement until he proves himself...

My guess is that it was something else that caused his release.
