Updating previous reports, the Associated Press reports the San Francisco 49ers have signed S Mark Roman to an undisclosed contract. In San Francisco, Roman will compete with S Chad Williams, S Keith Lewis and S Mike Adams in a wide-open race to become the 49ers’ starting free safety. Roman also could see time in S Tony Parrish’s spot at strong safety.
49ers cut Ben Emanuel to make room for Roman.

When the 9ers signed chad williams i thought he would when the starting job right away. His stats arent bad and Nolan know what he can do. No mater what happens the 9ers got major depth and wiil have an amazing special teams unit.

Chad williams at FS never really made sense to me- the guy is not built like a FS and does not have the acceleration of an FS. The guy has played SS all his professional life- I think this guy is more of a backup for parrish.
I think the only real competition will be between mike adams and mark roman. To tell you the truth i’m not as excited as everyone about this mark roman signing- mark roman is not a playmaker and hasn’t really stood out in his career. If you look at his stats-
Mike Adams has made more int’s last year starting half a season http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/494497
than Mark Roman his entire career!

Horrible signing- we have enough mediocrity on the team. I know its exciting to have these new players, and more veterans, but i seriously do not want our young players learning how to be mediocre.

Anyone know why Roman was released? News says that he had a beef with mgt because they brought in someone else (a rookie?) to challenge him, but from what I have been reading, Nolan’s method is to have EVERYONE fight for their position… that competition will bring out the best in individuals and create a competitive football team. So, is Roman up for the challenge? I will hold off judgement until he proves himself…
My guess is that it was something else that caused his release.

Man there is some stiff competition at the safety position. But at the end of it, I hope that Mike Adams at least has a backup spot, I like his speed after he makes interceptions.

Eric? Learning how to be mediocre?? Did you even graduate high school?? Wake up and learn something about football before you spout off how ignorant you are

We are steadily making improvments this year. Roman is a definite plus, as our secondary was horrible last year, especially with Parrish out. Hopefully we don’t get burned deep again…ala….the Dalas Cowboy game last season. with all the improvments with the injections of youth and veterans this season, I believe we can at least get 7 wins….I’m strollin wid Nolan baby

sausagebrown…I found an article in May that Roman was unhappy with them bring in Marquand Manuel.

Thanks Erickson. From the article, it sounds like he wants to be the man, and I still don’t understand why he thinks the niners competition will be different. Manuel is obviously more established, so my guess is that he thinks he could start for this team… and if he does, it is a good pickup by Nolan and Co.
