Another unhappy wide receiver, another rumor the Niners are interested. Oakland Raider Jerry Porter is the latest wide receiver rumored to be drawing interest from the 49ers. Reports are Porter and Raider head coach Art Shell don’t see eye to eye, and that Porter has asked to be traded. No word on if the Raiders will accommodate Porter’s request, but of course if there is any receiver out there unhappy looking to be traded the Niners always seem to be tops on the list.

word it they want TWO first round picks. he is worth a second round but not more. Bryant, Battle, Porter, Davis, and Johnson would be an intersting group. Much of the season in Norv turners offense will come down to A.S. making a pre snap read on the Defense. Additionally the running game will be key. If the niners can get 2 and 6 and 3 and less than 4 the VD mismatch may prove to be a real headache for other teams. I ammost curious to see what the straight ahead running game brings. In shorter yardage situations the spedd of VD and Gilmore may well provide for some big plays.

I believe Porter is worth a 2nd but a this point of his career – nothing more… He hasn’t yet proven to be worth anything higher!
The 49ers should have the inside track I’d think with Norv Turner being his head coach last year… If Turner believes that Porter is worth the risk, I think the 49ers will make a run at him.
I think that Porter would instantly take the #2 spot from Battle, even if Nolan says they will compete for it.

Porter is an interesting guy…loads of physical ability but has never shown more than an occasional flash of that ability in games.
I’ll go with Turner’s judgement on this one BUT, having just gotten rid of one head case (Brandon Lloyd) do we want another one?
He was a 2nd round pick but has never performed like one. Therefore it would be a risk to spend more than a single 3rd on him, and since I doubt that the Raiders’ ego (read: Al Davis) would allow themselves to admit they made such a big mistake, I don’t look for Porter to be a 49er.

Porter would compete for the number two but is more naturally a downfield threat and sideline receiver. Battle’s strength and asset for which he is most underated (due to injury time) is that he is a solid blocker. On traps and sweeps it is crucial to have a receiver capable of sealing a corner by blocking not only a CB or Safety but occasionally a LB.

If you remember Norv’s offense with the Boys, you will remember they had a certain #2 receiver who was tall, fast, and who would lead the league in YPC every year. He also happened to be a Niner killer. I think Porter is a better receiver than Alvin Harper(that name still makes me cringe). Bryant is in the Irvin mold of a physical route runner and our TE’s are wayyyyyy better than the ones they had on those teams. We get Porter our offense will make a jump into the top ten in my opinion. I know that sounds like crazy talk, but assuming Smith isn’t a total bust, he is going to have some opoprtunities to make plays this year. Will football season start already
