Ashley Lelie is still wanting a trade, and the Niners are still one of the teams on the list. Yesterday John Clayton reported that the Broncos are still trying to find a suitor for their disgruntled wide receiver. Reports are Shanahan would like to get a running back in exchange for Lelie. The Broncos would like a running back, a tight end, or a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. There were rumors yesterday that Chris Brown of the Titans wanted to be traded and that Denver was a possibility, but the Titans declined Brown’s trade request.
We already know the Niners will not give up a 1st or 2nd rounder, and that Eric Johnson will not be traded. So that leaves only the possibility of Kevan Barlow as tradebait, and I don’t see the Niners going into the season with Gore, Hicks and Robinson. But on the other hand Antonio Bryant is the only receiver on the roster that has had a productive season, and with Battle as the No. 2 you have to take into consideration the problems he has had with his knee. So until Lelie arrives in Bronco camp or he is traded, we’ll continue to hear the Lelie to San Francisco talk.

HB…I’d make that trade in a heartbeat.

When they say that Denver is looking for a running back, i don’t think they mean Hicks. Give them Barlow. Gore and Robinson would be an awesome 1-2 punch. Lelie and Bryant, decent tandom. I give us 6-7 wins with Gore/Robinson/Bryant/Lelie/Johnson/Davis/Smith. Pull the trigger

I agree. I would give Hicks up for Lelie in a heartbeat but Denver would have to be desperate for that to go down. Maybe the 49ers should consider trading Barlow. I just don’t like the idea of trading our veteran running back. Maybe if Robinson really turns heads in camp. I will be at the open practices and looking for that.

Give them Barlow for Lelie, if they even want Kevan Barlow.

when the 49ers drafted barlow, shanahan said that they had just gotten the best back in the draft…he would want barlow

If you all recall, Mike Shanahan praised the 49ers when they drafted Kevan Barlow. I think Barlow for Lelie, straight up, is probably a fair deal. Neither player has the heart of a champion…they aren’t leaders or team captains, respected by their teammates, who will do the heavy lifting and take the 49ers to the top. I don’t think either would start for a championship caliber team.
The question becomes, can Nolan rely on Frank Gore’s scarred knees to carry the team through a 16 game season for the next two to three years? Hicks and Robinson are complimentary types, but they don’t provide the insurance Nolan would need. Nolan needs a running game to take the heat off Alex Smith. If he trades Barlow, and Gore gets injured in the third week, Smith is ruined by pass rushing defenses that don’t respect the Niners ability to establish a running game with Hicks and Robinson.
This trade makes more sense next year. Not now.

Give them Barlow, each year they say is going to be his best year and it seems his ability to get thru the line is getting worse.

barlow should stay put. He is a big back and can run the ball well when healthy. Don’t buy into the ESPN anit-hype. he is 6’1” and 235. With a couple of less penalties his number would have been much closer to GORE and we would not be having this debate. Barlow is the biggest Rb on the team andstill young enough to make a difference. Hicks and Bajema would be a good deal for the niners and Hicks would make a nice compliment to Bell and Dayne. Wathc for good things from Barlow this year. with a solid line he will be fine and the starter BTW

I have a solution, it might seem like patch work, but it would work. I hear you talking about Robinson being an unknown yet and Gore with his knees. Free agency could help. There are names like James Mungro (Colts), JR Redmond (Cardinals), Moe Williams (Vikings), Amos Zereoue (Patriots), and Lamar Gordon (Eagles). Of these, Redmond would be huge and Gordon would work well. Redmond is a really good back we could use.
Doesn’t really matter who we get. Reggie Bush is holding out this season, re-entering the draft, Niners go 0-16 and take Bush. I really need to quit taking drugs in the morning. The first paragraph is legit though, and would work.
Gore/Hicks/Redmond/Robinson. Great set of backs.

We can’t trade Barlow until we have another “proven” every down back.

Barlow for Lelie? Done in a heartbeat.
That fool ain’t no every down back. He’s a looking for the ground before he’s down back.

I agree with Tank. While I like Gore and I don’t like Barlow, I’d definately be concerned about not having a legit backup for Gore. The key question really comes down to – is it more important for Alex Smith to have depth at RB or depth at WR? I say RB but you can definately make an argument for WR….
