Jeremy Newberry will return to practice when the 49ers open training camp next week but he’s not getting his job as starting center back. The two-time Pro Bowl will be restricted to one workout per day. And because of that restricted regimen, Coach Mike Nolan has decided that Newberry will return as the No. 2 center behind Eric Heitmann, at least for now.
Nolan says he wants the line to build chemistry and continuity and the only way to do that, he feels, is by keeping together in a game the same players on the line who are practicing on a daily basis.

Does anybody know why we have Heitmann instead of Baas playing center? I’m assuming it’s because Baas is built more like a guard which is where he is now but I’ve never heard anything but good about him from people who watched him play center at Michigan.

As much as I’d like to see J-New in there, I think this is a good call by Nolan. It was obvious last season that the O-Line didn’t benefit from the limited amount of practice time they had together. At the same time I’d love to see Baas in there at Center instead of Heitmann.

good call!

I’ve been saying Heitman would get the call all off season. Anyone who thinks Nolan would start a 2nd year player who missed allot of his rookie year at center doesn’t understand how important the position is to the line.

That is a great point. It really isn’t a surprise to use Heitman at center. Let Baas and Smiley battle it out for the other guard position and hope Snyder beats out Harris. This still gives us depth without having to depend on Newberry.

Very good move. Newb needs all the off-field time he can get. This gives us pretty good depth… if a guard gets hurt we’ll have smiley or baas on backup. If 2 guards get hurt we move Eric over and put Newb at center.
Now if we only had depth at the tackle posistion =(
3 hours after the fact.If Jennings or Snyder get hurt we’ll have a lot of problems.

Neweberry will be starting on opening day. I think this is more of a statement Nolan is trying to make. HE’s saying nobody job is safe (not even a pro bowl type guy like Newberry) so you better work your ass off.

It is not just a statement. He is speaking fact. The best line the 9ers could field would be:
LT - Jennings (??? But getting paid alot)
3 days after the fact.LG - Allen (10 PB’s)
C – Baas (Nasty, nasty, nasty)
RG - Heitman (Big Gaurd to run behind)
RT - Snyder (potentially the best Tackle on the team)
