John Murphy, of Yahoo Sports, reports the San Francisco 49ers are interested in signing free agent LB David Dixon, according to his agent Frank Murtha. Dixon went undrafted in the supplemental draft July 13. Dixon is expected to sign with the 49ers.
Height: 6-0 | Weight: 243 | 40-Time: 4.50
Strengths:
An outstanding natural athlete…Has elite timed speed…Was extremely productive at his level with an astounding 43 tackles for a loss…Very strong…Also a top special teams performer and blocked 10 kicks in 2003 and 2004…Great potential.
Weaknesses:
Never played against top competition…Has very little experience…Extremely raw and is the definition of a long-term project…Can he handle the mental side of the game?...Did not have the type of amazing pre-draft workout that he needed.
Notes:
Top JUCO recruit who committed to Kansas St. but did not qualify academically and instead opted for the pros…The physical tools are there but he is trying to make a quantum leap that few others have even dared try…Has a huge upside but won’t be able to contribute for years…Interesting practice squad candidate.

I read bio’s of this guy being from 6’0” to 6’2”. Which one is it. I’d rather have the 6’2” guy.

Not really “No to Brooks.” It was “Outbid by Bengals.”
Dixon measured in at 5-11 3/4 and 243 lbs at his pro day and ran a 4.75/4.88.

Nah I look at it as No to Brooks. Niners could have had him in the 3rd if they really wanted him.

Few athletes in the draft possess the athletic ability Dixon displays—running a 4.42-second 40-yard dash, with a 44-inch vertical jump, 49-inch triple jump and a 465-pound bench press. That leaping ability was evident as he blocked ten kicks in two seasons in the junior college ranks.
“David is the best I’ve seen,” said Blue Dragon head coach Craig Jersild. “Athletically, there’s no one who compares to him at this level, and not too many at the next. He’s 6-2, 245, runs a 4.4 in his blue jeans, benches whatever you put on the bar, and has a vertical jump of 44 inches, and he’s a football player

A 4.42 second 40 time? It just keeps getting lower and lower doesn’t it?

Actually, he is 6’0”, 40.67lbs, runs a 3.32, and benchs 4,217lbs. His pro day on the moon was only attended by a Hutchinson Comm. Coll. science Professor.

lol mike… but seriously, how tall is this guy? I mean, how much space does the depth chart hold for back up LBs?? Isn’t Parys Haralson a rather long term project too??? Corey Smith?? Manny Lawson? Plus that Maxwell guy who everyone was hyped on at the end of last year.
so yeah…. more camp fodder.

I don’t have a problem with the 49ers signing Dixon at all… As long as there is room on the roster, I say bring guys in to compete, it can only help!
Above, there was a link posted w/information about this player. Here is a quote from that information…
“Dixon plays with good confidence and is not afraid to mix it up in the trenches, but also comes with glowing praise from both coaching staffs due to his work ethic. He might not have the major college experience of A.J. Hawk, but one look at his production and athletic agility tests scores and you can see that someone will unearth a tremendous, but raw talent with a blank slate to mold within”
ANYTIME You have a chance to “Unearth a tremendous talent” I say you take the chance everytime

You CANNOT COACH TEAM SPEED. The jim Maxwells and other fringe players will always be left on the side to make room for younger faster players who can play. Only if they really can play. Derek Smith is not the fastest but is a PLAYER. Saleem Rasheed better pack a bag
