Concerns over Jeremy Newberry’s health and his ability to practice and play on a regular basis could lead the 49ers to ask the two-time Pro Bowl center to restructure his contract. Newberry had surgery to repair damage in his degraded right knee joint in December. He hopes to resume practicing with the team, probably on a limited basis, when the 49ers open training camp late next month. Though Newberry said recently that his goal is to play in all 16 games this season, the 49ers remain uncertain about his ability to meet that goal and the team would be reluctant to commit to his $3.5 million salary unless club officials are pretty sure he’s healthy enough to make it through the year.
Restructure for Newberry?

I love the guy and all, but he has been holding the rest of this young line down by trying to stay in the game. The new line needs to gel. Put him in as a backup. Sorry JNew.

GM’s can’t get attached to players. If someone is bogging down the team, they gotta go.

I hope Baas gets the job

If he is healthy enough to play, he is the BEST center on the team hands down. His ability to read defenses would be a great asset to not the whole offense but specifically to Alex Smith. He does need to be able to practice and not just play on game day.
12 hours after the fact.As for his contract, even though the cap is presently not an issue, JN may well be willing to renegotiate because playing another year helps with his pension so monies forgone now woud be recouped to a certain extent in the future after he retires. Jennings, Allen, Newberry, Snyder, Harris
scott said:
No Snyder is going to to be the RT. Harris is going to be the first of the bench because he is not he best starter, hes a fucking joke. Snyder is amazing and he is not going to play at G. Smiley or Baas will fight it out for the RG.

Or
Jennings, Allen, Baas, Smiley, Snyder

that to me would be the best starting lineup we could have this year, lets just face it, j new is an outstanding center but he will never be 100% again, at least not in an effecient time manner, we need to baas in there and let the line mold

I agree with Ed on that line. Those guys are big, strong, and good linemen. We need those guys to develop and there is no better time to start but now. We will not win a championship next year, so there is no reason not to give our guys with potential time to grow. I hate when losing teams draft young guys and stick em behind the old and busted guys who’s talents are declining.
JNew was good, but now he’s broken down. We can’t keep him thinking he’s going to go back to being 24 or 25 again. He’s been injury plauged for longer then I can remember. Time to put the old dog down.

Only reason I use this analogy is because it was on this weekend. Jeremy Newberry is like Jake Taylor in the movie “Major League”. Ironically, they both are at the end of their career because of bad knees. I see some people bringing up that Newberry is the best at reading defenses and such. Like Jake Taylor, he needs to become a coach then. Youth and health far outweigh wisdom if your body is broken down. Sign Newberry as the OL coach next year. Your time is up JN, sorry.

WHEN HEALTHY JN IS ONE OF THE BEST…I KNOW HE IS RARELY HEALTHY BUT IF HE SEEMS LIKE HE COULD BE THIS SEASON THEN GIVE HIM A SHOT…THIS ARTICLE WAS ABOUT MAYBE RESTRUCTURING HIS CONTRACT NOT ABOUT CUTTING HIM..I AM A BIG FAN OF BAAS AND I HOPE HE TAKES OVER THE CENTER POSITION IN TIME BUT THE CENTER POSITION IS A LOT MORE THAN JUST SNAPPING THE FOOTBALL..JN IS DEFINATLEY THE BEST CENTER ON OUR TEAM SO IF THERE IS A CHANCE THAT HE IS OK LET THE MAN PLAY I DONT CARE IF HE IS 60 BAAS WILL GET HIS TURN..AT THE VERY LEAST HE COULD HELP TEACH THESE YOUNG GUYS BUT IT IS TO EARLY TO CALL IT QUITS AND GO STRAIGHT TO THE COACHING STAFF..HE HAS WORKED TO HARD TO GET ON THE FIELD AS A PLAYER..LET HIM PROVE TO US WHAT HE HAS OVERCOME

greg, i feel what ur sayin but coming off that last surgery they said it was a 50/50 shot, now when training camp starts and he is not healthy enough to practice, then y not put in our young fresh talent for the future

We don’t him. Screw a contract re-structure, how about a contract termination. He will never be the same. I’m not worried about what he knows about reading blocks, because he’s never on the field blocking anyone. If the 49ers are going to compete for a championship, we need to leave the sympathy alone. I don’t care about what he used to be. He ain’t did shit in years.
Ya ever hear the term, What have you done for me lately?
He’s definatley kept our bench nice and warm with his big ass, but that ain’t going to make your team better.

Sorry, but I disagree with almost everyone here. A 60-80% J. New is better than anyone else at center on this team. He is a true warrior and a pro-bowl calibur center bad knee or not. When healthy one of the best in this league, when not healthy, still best on this team…...
3 days after the fact.ed gein said:
arock49, like last year? when he was giving away the snap count by bobbing his head? no when healthy he is the best, but when not, he isnt, he is not the future of this team, he is the past, so if he is not 100%, no need to stall the development of our nex center, who i think it should be baas
3 days after the fact.Davis #6 Pick for President said:
The best when healthy? You guys forget we got Larry Frickin Allen! I think saying JNew’s crippled ass has been better then Allen is just insane. Allen has pro bowl after pro bowl appearences, 9 in total. How many does Newberry have? 2. Newberry has never in his life been as dominant as Larry Allen. I think you guys need to stop smoking so much weed and let me get of few puffs. You guys sound like you got some good shit.

When did Larry Allen start playing center….? You guys are all so loyle, everyone wants to cut Newberry… what if his surgery was a success and hes back healthy… still want to start the Sophmores? He is a smart and very good center, which is a very tough position to fill and you’all just want to start puttin guards there and cross your fingers….. No Loyalty, doesnt make sence.
5 days after the fact.ed gein said:
ya i didnt know allen played center either, what i said arock49 is that if he is not 100% when training camp starts (meaning that the surgery was a success) then let our line mold with one solid starter without switching him up at practice and the games. if JN isnt healthy, and they put in heitmann at center, i wont be mad, just as long as that is our center for the whole year barring injury, as long as they mold like they did last year in the final few games where we had a decent and impressive running game, we will be fine

It seems like a bunch of you are watching something else. He played in all but 6 games last year and dealt with pain every single game, for what??? His team. And when he was in there, he did not get beat and did his thing every game. He played those 10 games because the coaches knew he was the best lineman we had at the game and he is a warrior and true team player. And Ed Gein….He was suppose to bob his head so the recievers and tackles know when to go, when they cant hear the snap count and if you knew anything about football, you would have known that, but obviously you dont. I am a huge 9er fan, but when 49er haters run their mouths but a lot of us being fairweather fans, I could not agree more.
