Brooks’ stock rising: Ahmad Brooks, the Virginia linebacker eligible for the July 13 supplemental draft, needs to make a good visit with the 49ers. The 49ers were the first team to schedule a visit after last Thursday’s workout. Brooks improved his stock by running in the 4.6 range and getting his weight to 260 pounds, 32 fewer than his weight 10 weeks ago. The 49ers need an impact linebacker on the other side of Manny Lawson, but Brooks has more experience in the system, coming from Al Groh’s 3-4 scheme at Virginia. The debate is whether the 49ers can steal him with a fifth-round pick or if they have to use a second-round pick.

I’d say a third round pick is reasoonable, but anything above that is way too much for someone with so many problems

I agree, anything higher than a 3rd rounder is just risking too much. When looking at a player with the problems Brooks has had, you don’t want to risk one of your first 2 picks on him.
If we are able to get him, Mike Singletary could turn this kid into an absolute beast and make our LB core one of the most feared in the league due to the matchup problems they will cause.

Well, I don’t normally like to see us take gambles on projects, but this kid could be an animal. I’d say throw out a 2nd rounder. One thing we need to do is get aggressive about getting players we want. If Nolan went to his workout, which I think I read somewhere, then they have a big interest. Then we were the first team to schedule a visit with him. What the heck, he knows the 3-4, give him a incentive filed contract, it would be worth the risk.

This kid better be worth the risk. Rememeber, we lose whatever pick we offer up for this kid, sounds like a 2nd or 3rd. PLUS, we lose an undisclosed pick, my guess is 5th, 6th, or 7th, in the Dilfer/Dorsey trade. Now we do get an extra 4th rounder from Washington next year for the Brandon Lloyd trade. But still, we don’t want to go into the 2007 draft with too few of picks. This rebuilding process has another year or two to go, and I don’t want to see us stump our growth on a project. We have the extra 4th rounder, how cool would it be to get Brooks with that!

Yes, this kid is good but how many picks are we loosing new year draft. Can the 49ers hold on what we have and are they good enough?

In reality your loosing a pick in next years draft, but your gaining one in this years draft. It doesn’t really change the total number of draft picks and it lets us get him exposed to our system a year sooner rather than wait until next year to draft manny lawson’s counter-part. And as a young rebuilding team with fans who want to win ASAP I think it would be a great move. If you look at the picture on ESPN’s website (as of Wednesday at 3pm EST)of him, his eyes have that intensity, kind of like Mike Singletary. Not saying he’s that good, but that’s what it reminded me of.

I agree with jw. I imagine in next years draft we would be taking a player to help out on our front 7 on defense and it seems as if this guy is a great fit to it. I’ve personally never seen him play but just from reading what everybody else has to say about him, it seems like it would be worth the risk. I think 2nd round would be a huge risk and maybe not worth it, but it all just depends on if how he turns out this year. A 3rd round pick would be an obviously smaller risk and I think if he is around when the 3rd round comes, we should take him.

Eric…don’t forget they should get comp picks for Carter, Peterson, and Beasley. Which would be enough to trade some of their other picks (since you can’t trade comp picks) to move up in the lower rounds if need be.

Does anyone know what status Carter, Peterson, and Beasley were in? I think they were Unrestricted Free Agents, which means we don’t get shit for them. If they were traded, or were Restricted Free Agents, then we’ll get compensation. But not if they were UFA’s, which i’m almost positive they all were.

you gotta spend money to make money! i mean, you gotta risk picks to get solid players. i say throw a 2nd rounder at him and put him under mike singletary’s tutelage…. golden. the only frightening thing would be starting two OLB’s in lawson and brooks, unless Corey Smith or Brandon Moore beat out Brooks… which… i dunno, moore might…

eric, i’m pretty sure you’re right that they were all ufa’s… fuck.

I’m willing to bet we do what we can to get this guy if we like him. Nolan is entering his second year and we have a more stable front office in place. Nolan is going to want more solid results this season and he knows that LBs still need an improvement.

Eric…yes they were UFA’s but usually if you do not get as many FA’s as you lose you get comp picks. Don’t worry they will get at least 2 comp pick. 3 at the most.

i wouldnt want to waste nothin more than a 4th rounder on him

Brooks has had some off field issues but who hasent? I like the fit on this team and I think we have the right staff in place to keep risks like this in place… The reward could be real nice especially if we do an incentive ridden contract. I wouldnt mind a 3rd rounder for him….. He has great potential.

Antonio Bryant, Bryan Gilmore, Shaun Hill, Andre Torrey, Chad Williams, TJ Slaughter, Walt Harris, and we signed that Full back from Houston I believe?? We signed our fair share of free agents, so i don’t believe we’ll see much in the compensatory draft.

Eric…I forget how it works with the whole Comp pick thing and FA. But trust me on this the Niners will get a comp pick for Peterson and Carter.
