Update: 2:27 pm—Seems the reports from Georgatos may be a smoke screen. Here is a tidbit from NFL.com on Brooks workout:
Mike Nolan from the 49ers was the only head coach there. He was joined by San Francisco VP of player personnel Scot McCloughan. Brooks will work out for the 49ers at their place for two days next week.
Brooks lost 32 pounds in 10 weeks (he was measured at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds) and passed five drug tests in the last 10 weeks. He ran three times, timed at 4.68, 4.75 and 4.74 in the 40, with 10-yard splits of 1.53, 1.58 and 1.58 and 20-yard splits of 2.73, 2.75 and 2.75. His arm span measured 33½ inches and his hands measured 9½. He had a 32-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 long jump, a 4.43 short shuttle, an 11.84 long shuttle, a 7.43 three-cone drill and 19 benches. The conditions were not really good, just average.
__
On Saturday the Sacramento Bee reported that Ahmed Brooks was set to visit the 49ers after June 28th, and take a physical. Which at the time seemed to say the Niners were showing strong interest in possibly drafting Brooks in the Supplemental Draft. Now it appears that the interest in Brooks may be starting to fade.
Dennis Georgatos of the Mercury News is now reporting that the 49ers’ interest has dampened in using a pick in the supplementary draft on Brooks or any other player. Dennis mentions that Scot McCloughan, says the 49ers want to hang onto their picks for next April’s draft. And that the 49ers have decided the risk versus reward is too high for them in the supplementary draft.

Why does Brooks team want to let him go? 49ers at this time is smart to hold off till April.

I heard talks about him in the nfl draft but ummm we need a DE not more linebackers!

In my opinion, Brooks has the pro bowl potential that the niners need. He will be a monster whether it be in the inside or the outside.

Dude….it has been said before that we run a 3-4 defense. Do you know nothing about football, in a 3-4 defense, there is not a DE.
on the line is a Def. guard, a nose tackle, a Def. guard.
then there is a outside LB, 2 inside LB, then another oustide LB.
we shouldn’t have any DE on our roster what so ever
! Quit talking about it
!

What the hell is a defensive guard and who do they intend on guarding? The defensive quarterback?
A 3-4 Consists of 2 DE’s, 1 DT, 2 inside linebacks, 2 outside linebacks.
We do need at least one more solid DE. The front 4, or front 3 in our situation are the most important people on a defensive, because the D-line is in charge of getting push on the O-line and causing havoc.

Hey Anonymous, this is the NFL, nobody says Defensive Guard. I don’t care if your talking about the 3-4 or not.
I’m sorry, but Canadian’s arn’t allowed to post on this site. So plz don’t ever do it again.

davis # 6 is right, what the hell is a defensive guard?

defensive guard? LOL, well atleast he got the nose tackle right, and there’s no DT its a NT in the 3-4 Def.
23 mins after the fact.AntiG said:
the 3-4 in 4-3 terminology can be looked at like this:
NT, huge NT, NT/UT
RDE, MLB/OLB, OLB/MLB, RDE
there really is no true anything in the scheme other than the NT.

Who is he guarding Warren Moon or Doug Flutie?

A nose tackle is a Defensive tackle. Hence the name tackle. He’d called a Nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme because there is only one, so he plays in the middle, like a face has a nose in the middle.
Are you Nose Tackle purists telling me the when you switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 that you trade your DT’s because you won’t use them? Hell no, your best DT becomes your Nose Tackle because, guess what??? They are the same damn thing just playing a in a different alignment.
This shit is Hilarious.

no, your biggest, strongest, stoutest DT becomes your 3-4 NT.
Your best medium-sized 2-gap DTs become the “ends.”
You end up getting rid of your DEs that lack the speed and athleticism to convert to outside linebacker.
1 hour after the fact.AntiG said:
Also you end up getting rid of your pass rushing one-gap DTs if they can’t/don’t want to change their technique to and play two gaps instead of always just penetrating. Hence why Warren Sapp was such a shitty end when the Raiders tried the 3-4.

Year after year the 49ers scout supplemental players and don’t draft them. Yet, because people want this “steal” they’re willing to discount everything that comes out.
Right now the 49ers are probably thinking they’d have to drop a 2nd or at least a 3rd. They’re not wanting to do that. They put out the word they’re not that interested.
Now, come July, maybe this turd drops to the 5th or 6th round… Then, having scouted him, you’ll have a better feel about whether to change your mind about drafting him because the worth of a 5th or 6th isn’t really much – a special teamer, injury risk, turd or conversion – so you’re getting the guy in a year early.

if anyone could help me out here i’d appreciate it but exactly how does the supplemental draft work? is it like a continuous thing all the way up until training camp starts and how do they determine what round we have to give up our pick in?

In late summer, the NFL also holds a Supplemental Draft to accommodate players who did not enter the regular draft because they thought they still had academic eligibility to play college football. The supplemental draft maintains the same team order from the regular draft, with the team with the worst record in the previous season picking first. However, in the supplemental draft, a team is not required to use any picks. Instead, if a team wants a player in the supplemental draft, they submit a “bid” to the Commissioner with the round they would pick that player. If no other team places a bid on that player at an earlier spot, the team is awarded the player and has to give up an equivalent pick in the following year’s draft.

Nice job ShaneO. Based off of that info, how high of a draft pick are we willing to give up for a guy who seems to have a knack for off field issues. Look, the Niners are still using Oxyclean to get the shit stains that Owens left on this team. Do we really want the problems this guy can bring? For a linebacker? Here’s a few of my points:
1- He only played in 6 games last year due to injuries. Is he fully recovered? Is he injury prone? Are these nagging, reoccuring injuries?
2- Al Groh, coach for Virginia, stated they are in a rebuilding process at Virginia, and released Brooks for “undisclosed reasons”. If you’re rebuilding, a senior linebacker “stud” is what you want. Someone like Ray Lewis out there directing and leading your defense, and tutoring your young linebackers. Guess Groh didn’t see Brooks as that person. Here’s what he said exactly:
“There’s certain things that are vital to putting your team together every year, and those things become in sharper focus and are multiplied when you’re in a rebuilding circumstance as we are,” Groh said. “Those thing are focus, commitment, dependability, and so while each one of these players’ circumstance is distinctly different, in order to put the team together with some consistency and dependability, I’ve decided that it’s best for us to move on from these circumstances, and it’s best for these players to move on.”
3- He had one year where he was First team All ACC, and second team All America. One season! Where he only had 86 tackles??? Chad Greenway, Iowa Hawkeye who went first round, had 156 in 2005. Brooks is NOT first round material, should not be mentioned with AJ Hawk, Greenway, or any first round LBs.
I think those who are calling Brooks a stud are reaching, reaching for talent and reaching for some Niner news. I’m not impressed with Brandon Moore either, but I don’t see anything that shows that this guy is worth a look. Even if Mel freaking Kiper had anything to say, because that guy doesn’t know crap.

i dont think we would waste a first round pick on this guy, i think if anything we would try to get him at 6th or 7th
