Yea, but nothin wrong with havin some depth and and an xtra pass rusher on the team we watched too many games last year where the QB had about 10-15 seconds to throw the ball!! its cool we signed all these DEs to be LBs but is it just me or do we have like NO real DEs???
3 hours after the fact.AntiG said:
ShaneO that’s because we run a 3-4 defense. There are no traditional DEs in that scheme.

u guys think we are gonna have the personnel to run the 3-4 this year? we don’t have a “big ass anchorman” for the NT, adams and sopaaga(not correctly spelled, sorry) are not the usual size for NT’s in a 3-4, their smaller

YEA MAN, DA 3-4 WILL WORK, GRANTED YOU’D LIKE TO HAVE A MONSTER IN THE MIDDLE, BUT THE GUYS YOU JUST MENTIONED WILL WORK, THEIR LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY WILL WORK TO THEIR ADVANTAGE PLUS, THEY WON’T GET CUT BLOCKED VERY EASILY.OFCOURSE,THIS ALSO DEPENDS HOW HEALTHY THEY CAN STAY. ADAMS WILL BE SOLID, SOPOAGA IS HELLA STRONG BUT HIS WEAKNESS MIGHT STILL BE HIS LOWER-BACK.

I know that “listed” and “actual” are a little different, but Sopoaga is listed at 321 pounds, how much do you WANT him to weigh??? Adams is listed at 299, which isn’t bad either. By comparison, Chicago’s HEAVIST DT is 318 pounds. The SUPER BOWL CHAMPS run the 3-4, and their heaviest DT is 302 pounds. I don’t see anything to worry about at DT for our team.

i agree with you guys on the 3-4 i think the DTs are ok i just wish we had some bigger DEs to fit our scheme, but i think we got a good chance at having an above average D this year, i think B Moore is gonan step it up!!

Give Sopoaga some time, last year was in actuallity his rookie season(during his real rookie season he was injured and out for the year so his second season was his first season playing in the nfl).

We’re outta cash. Spent it all on Walt Harris. They’ll sit out this year and re-enter the draft, fuckin’ gold diggers, or should I say fuckin 49ers

Eric –
Sopoaga in a recent article was said to be at 331 lbs now.
Chicago runs a tampa-2 scheme which require quick, athletic, one gap penetrators at DT. Totally different type of DT than what you want for a 3-4.
Casey Hampton is Pittsburgh’s biggest tackle, he’s around 340-350 lbs.

Eddie D, you’re an idiot. The Niners aren’t even CLOSE to being out of money. We went into the draft, AFTER Walt Harris signing, with 15-20 million in cap room. The top draft picks are centered around the picks around you. You don’t want to sign the 5th pick of the draft to a higher contract than the 4th pick, or lower than the 6th. It’s this way every year. July is when the first rounders start getting signed. You guys act like you’re new to this, it’s the same way every year.
AntiG, forgot about Hampton, he’s “listed” at 325. Regardless, our size at DT is fine.

Our size at NT is ok, but at DE it is below average. Typically 3-4 teams field ends (converted 2-gap tackles) in the 300-320 lb range due to the lack of upfront presence of the scheme in order to help free up the linebackers to shoot the gaps. In the offseason I was really hoping for Ma’ake Kemoeatu (and after he went off the market, Sam Adams) which would’ve prompted Sopoaga to move to left end and Young to right end. Sopoaga is surprisingly a great athlete, he is a terrific tree-climber with quick-twitch muscles, ran a 4.97 and 5.05 40 at the combine (of NFL 3-4 ends, only Seymour and Castillo had faster times) and had a 31 sack season in JUCO which at least shows he makes for a decent pass rusher when the time requires it. I’d love to bring another NT in to be able to utilize Ice as an end and maximize the effectiveness of the line.
