No doubt before the injuries Newberry was the man. But continuity is the key to a great O-line. Will Newberry practicing once a week through Training camp and the season bring the necessary amount of continuity? I would prefer we put in one of the younger guys at center just to have a better chance of getting every practice and all 16 games. Playing in only 35% of games the past 2 years and trying to play on a knee that doctors doubt will hold up does not reassure continuity can be gained.

stoney- I agree and with Hietman looking good at the end of the year, I wouldnt put to much into Newberry’s wanting to make his comeback. When the doc oks his return and he can practice with the team then I will be excited. but until then I look forward to some of the o-line competition this season. We should be way better now with Allen and with Jennings coming back and all the experience the young guys have from last season. I read that we rushed for almost 400 yards the last two games of the season last year and with Gore healthy we will be so much better this season.

HUH… Well we brought in Larry Allen / Antonio Bryant / Trent Dilfer (Veteran QB and Mentor for Smith) / Walt Harris / Extra CB Depth… We had a GREAT (Argueably the best) Draft! Our QB position is better our RB position is better our WR position is better our TE position is better our O-Line is much better our DB postition is better!

Dan…Losing Carter and Lloyd. Come on now. Please tell me what they contributed. Lloyd couldn’t make the easy catches, but excelled at the highlight catches. Never went over the middle. You say Bryant is a #2. Well hello that what Lloyd was at best. So we got draft picks and Bryant basically for Lloyd. Niners win there. Carter hasn’t done anything since his rookie season. He didn’t fit the 3-4 well so he’s gone. Niners will get a comp pick for him and did well in the draft with Lawson & Haralson. Yes it is early but looking at it now. They are an upgrade. JP hasn’t been the same since his injury, and not sure if you watched bu JP hasn’t done jackshit in over 2 years. Not worth the money he was asking.
Niners have a much better line. Better receivers. Linebackers in the end will be a better unit (at least I hope) Corners are better. Team is much improved from last season. Not to mention they upgraded the OC position (thank you Green Bay) and have a vet QB behind Smith who can come in and contribute if need be. And the Niners have Joe Nedney, best kicker since Wersching.
I’m sure I’ve left something out, or I’m sure you’ll say that Lloyd and Carter were Pro Bowlers (but just watch them disappear in WA.) Remember it’s easy to be a star on a bad team.
