Dennis Georgatos of the San Jose Mercury News is reporting that rookie Manny Lawson is being penciled in as the right outside linebacker to fill the role left vacant by Julian Peterson’s free-agent departure to Seattle.

Lawsom will have his share of growing pains, particularly in pass coverage, but, unlike offensive rookies, it’s definitly better for him to be out there learning, generally defensive rookies can get by on instincts.

This is expected. Nick makes agood comment, rookie LB’s in particular can survive on instincts look at Seattle’s or the Jets’ LBs the past two years. As long as our DBs can provide coverage there is an opportunity to help Lawson in pass coverage with over the top help from the safety.

i agree with got vd and davis #6, peterson wasnt even close to his old caliber, lawson at least has a better chance of making improvements to this team as oppose to peterson, who really just wanted to get paid(overpaid), but i do think we’ll have a pro bowler this year, and i think it will be one of our two awesome tight ends

I am hoping Manny Lawson will meet all expectations, and I think given a year he will be as good if not better than Julian Peterson was. Still, all this hating on Peterson needs to stop. Its not like he opted to leave, the team would not pay him what he wanted. He is injury prone, which I think is a good reason for not resigning him, but man was he awesome. Any of you gys actually go to 49ers games? Peterson and Bryant Young are the only players who interact with fans and get you in the game. I hope Lawson brings that with his defensive abilities….

Manny Lawson is a leader and he proved that in college. Lawson may not come in being at the level of Julian Peterson; however, he will have at least a year under Singletary and in Nolan’s crazy defensive schemes. I think he will improve during this season and we will see him becoming a leader of the niners D for years to come. Don’t sweat the fact that he couldn’t complete a drill. Conditioning takes time and if he is determined he should not get as winded in subsequent weeks and during the preseason.
