The San Francisco 49ers announced Thursday they have traded Ken Dorsey and an undisclosed seventh-round selection in the 2007 draft to the Cleveland Browns for QB Trent Dilfer.
“Trent was a player we had interest in last season,” Head Coach Mike Nolan said. “We were looking for a veteran quarterback with experience that could help mentor Alex Smith. Trent fits the bill on both counts and we are excited to have him with the 49ers.”

Dave said:
Awesome, this offseason is going just as I had hoped. We basically got Dilfer for a 7th round pick, seeing that we had Dorsey signed to a restricted free agent contract that would have made him a free agent come next year.

I think it was a good trade. We traded away a player that we know cant play quarterback in Ken Dorsey. We all remenber that game against Seattle when he blew it. (missed Terry Jackson WIDE OPEN!) Ww also give up a 7th round pick which is not bad. I think that the 49ers got the better end of this deal because Alex Smith needs a veteran to mentor him. Trent is going to do for us. Another thing if Smith gets hurt Trent can step in and hes got the experience to win. Dont forget took the Ravens to the Super Bowl and won it all.

Lost a guy with no arm and a 7th rounder that will be cut next year anyway (7th rounder). Dilfer will find THE DUKE if Smith can’t!

I seem to have agreat deal of confidence in Mike Nolan. He knows exactly what he wants to do, to better this team. Two wins two years ago four wins last year. I say lets double our win total again this year. Nice pick-up coach, glad to be along for the ride.

shit dilfer is like 70 years old he’s already came and gone. he’ll never get any better then he already has. dorsey hasn’t even peaked yet, if he ever does, very stupid trade. id rather see us sign marcus vick.

Not a bad move but I’ll miss Dorsey. Maybe we can dump Kevan Barslow next.

lawrence phillips is a bitch…hes the reason why we lost steve young…faggot ass…he missed the block on either aneas williams or simeon rice on that play…i forgot…we coulda got like 2 more super bowls from young

p-thizzel…regardless of how old Dilfer is. He is a solid vet who can help Smith. Something Dorsey would have ever done. Also a 70 year old Dilfer > Dorsey. Actually my 70 year old armless grandma > Dorsey.

ohh thats right we wanted to trade for a guy that is trying to come into his own and that is just trying to peak…ohh yeaa we have alex smith for that….oh yeaaa we dont want a guy who needs to mentor smith and has to be 70 years old to do that cuz he knows all that you need to know to be a qb in this league…oh wait Nolan just traded for that guy
f*ckin idiots in here man
1 hour after the fact.P'Nelly said:
Great trade…and he actually just turned 34! He’s probably got 2-3 years left in him as a legit NFL Backup, who by the way won a SuperBowl!
Marcus Vick is a glorified High School QB won’t amount to anything more than Maurice Clarett. Dorsey on the other hand is a nice guy and a good student of the game….and let me emphasize STUDENT. FYI, Dorsey peaked at Miami 5 years ago….out!
1 hour after the fact.mike said:
i think dorsey will fit great wit clevland i think he will have an ok carear wit them i dont know wat dilfer can do how he can help smith he never struck me as a good QB but we will see wat happens

Mike, Mike, Mike….Dilfer Quarterbacked the Ravens to a SuperBowl and then mentored Matt Hasselback in Seattle until he was ready to be the man. Plus he’s great in locker room and a guy whose been in this league for 12 YEARS!
2 hours after the fact.Justin said:
I like the trade, but I wish we could of kept Dorsey for a third stringer. We should of dumped “The Bachelor”. But you are right, Dorsey would of left us at the end of the season anyway. I like Dilfer and I hope he helps the team with both skill and inspiration.
2 hours after the fact.Trent Dilfer said:
I’m comin’ to the bay, and it ain’t to be a back up, bitches.Whenever I’ve gotten a chance to play I have done decent, I won’t lose the game for u. Alex is soft when it comes to injuries, so either way I will be seeing plenty of action bitches. Dorsey and a 7th rounder is all I’m worth? We’ll see.
2 hours after the fact.Johan said:
they shoulda gotten rid of the bachelor or cody pickett. seriously, given a chance, dorsey could become a good quarterback

come on Dilfer will benefit this team way more than Ken Dorsey. Honestly, why do we need 4 QB’s that are under 4 years or less experience? Face it, we needed a vetern QB, no matter who good or bad you think he was, he’ll definitely benefit us and Alex Smith. I don’t think thats something Dorsey could’ve offered us.

10 hours after the fact.thizzel said:
if anything, we would keep him this year and try to see if he can add to his trade value..i’ll take my chances with him cause he adds depth..the last two years we were hit with the injury bug, i’d rather have him available than nothing..if barlow expects to finish out his contract(like 2-3 yrs), i think he would be better adding more weight and being like a t.j. ducket type back..barlow’s my dog..i ain’t giving up on him..
11 hours after the fact.Big Dizzle said:
I think the trade was a good move. Dorsey would be a great quarterback in the AFL but c’mon son this it the NFL. I am really impressed with Nolan because he has a plan. Improving the roster by keeping the good players with potential and dumping the non-believers (Winborn, Lloyd, Beasly), and also improving the front office. nolan will bring us back to greatness soon…

This is a good move. We need a veteran qb to mentor Alex Smith. As for Marcus Vick, he is wasted talent. He had everything in the palm of his hands and he blew it for being a billy bad ass!! I’m suprised he isn’t going to start to play for the Raiders. He would fit right in there
12 hours after the fact.Robert said:
I think it was a good move, Like it or not Alex is our QB, Rattay and Dorsey both are better QB now than Alex but there is no upside to them and honestly how much do they really want to help Alex, they were all competing to be the # 1 guy. Dilfer wants to come here to be near his family he really doesn’t want to be the # 1 guy in the team his whole purpose is to help Alex improve his game… Grreat move

I agree with everyone thinking Dilfer can mentor Smith. Remember, Dilfer “managed” the Ravens offense to that SB win. With the Ravens that year, he wasn’t expected to be John Elway. He was expected to not make mistakes and make sure the offense eats up clock.
That is exactly what Nolan wants Smith to do: manage the game. He doesn’t have to be Peyton Manning and air it out 30-50 times a game. Make 16 passes, but make them count.
14 hours after the fact.Richee said:
Dorsey’s clipboard services will be greatly appreciated. If you compare him to Pickett, Pickett has better potential. What a steal for getting a super bowl/pro bowl qb to mentor/step in for our 1st pick. Dilfer does pass to tight ends…

There is one thing i cant stand and it is fans who praise and praise someone while there with there team but once their gone its like oh who gives a shit theyre shit and we dont need him, living near Philly when TO came it was a mad house it was TO this and TO that but once he was in dallas it was like o he was a trouble maker who cares he wasnt even that good u guys are turnin into bad fans once hes gone and u said u liked , say u still are a fan of him its ridiculas Dorsey was a good player and he’ll have a brighter future with the browns

Now we have a chance to win a game!! Excellent move
Smith gets to sit on the bench and watch how it’s done. It will take alot of pressure off of him. Dilfer has won a super bowl! Smith can’t even win a game.

There has never been a huge Dorsey fan base… he hasn’t done anything for us! Nothing! And you saying Dorsey was a “Good player” is like saying the White house is Purple.

Anonymous…Burly is right Dorsey never had a huge following…well at least not around these parts.
Burly I think it would be better to say this: Saying Dorsey was a “Good Player” is like saying that Rashaun Woods is as good as Jerry Rice.

Dorsey got about 8 solid games to prove himself (and played like a rookie), so with Alex Smith getting all the first string snap if he fails after 8 games do we just say he was a bust and dump him. Its freaking ridiculous the QB double standard. Teams just try to damn hard to make their high profile QB good, they don’t bother to give even half the time to guys below them which probably could play better. The words like upside and potential are basically the same as just drafting a guy because he has a fast 40.

first and foremost homeboy i live in vacaville so if you want to meet up some time and repeat that in person we can definately work that out coward. anyhow enough of the tough guy shit but when i think mentor i don’t think dilfer. the man has like double the inteezys then he does TDs how is he suppose to lace Smith up? i mean yeah he had one good year i think it was like 97. all im sayin is i liked the fact that we had Dorsey, because if Smith flopped for any reason in my opinion Dorsey could step in and its possible he could step his game up. dilfer on the other hand will never steps his game up. but hey whats done is done i just hope it works.
