Update: 05.04.06
The Browns and 49ers are talking about a trade for quarterback Trent Dilfer, a league source said Wednesday. It could be done within the next day or two, the source said. The 49ers are interested in Dilfer as a backup to Alex Smith, the first pick of the 2005 draft.
Dilfer, who was at odds with Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon last season, would be closer to his hometown of Fresno, Calif., and reportedly wants out of Cleveland.
Problem is, the Browns need a backup/mentor for Charlie Frye.
The Browns and 49ers have had preliminary discussions recently, but talks have resumed in the past couple of days. A trade could have been completed over the weekend
Source [Cleveland Plain Dealer]
The 49ers have a renewed interest in Cleveland quarterback Trent Dilfer, whom they nearly traded for last year. One NFL source said the 49ers might have made an offer for Dilfer on Sunday if the Browns could have swung a deal for Lions quarterback Joey Harrington. Cleveland apparently doesn’t want to trade Dilfer unless they it has a veteran replacement to compete with Charlie Frye.
Source: [San Francisco Chronicle]
The 49ers are said to be the team interested in Dilfer as a backup for Alex Smith, the first overall pick in the 2005 draft. Dilfer wants to play for the 49ers, according to a source in San Francisco, because they are the closest team to his hometown of Fresno, Calif. Dilfer told a friend he thought he would be traded Sunday, according to a source. The 49ers tried to acquire Dilfer from Seattle in the 2005 offseason, but offered only a sixth-round draft choice. The Browns beat that by giving the Seahawks a fourth-round draft pick in 2005.

that would be a good vet to help alex i dont know how i would feel for giving a draft pick but maybe we could give barlow and we could get dilfer and another player or a pick?

It would most likely be a 5th or 6th round pick. I’d take that in a heartbeat. Dilfer for a 5th or 6th. Dilfer > Dorsey+Palmer

Dilfer is a class guy and would be huge for Smith. He’s also pretty servicable if Smith were to get injured. Would he be the only person other than B.Y. with a SB on the 49ers?

im all for it
dilfer is a more than capable back-up. And if he wants to be a 9er, that makes it even better.

i’ll take my chances our current squad for now instead of trading barlow for dilfer..i would wait until the the final cuts are made..

I would like to see Dilfer come to San Fransisco, I am graduating from Fresno State (where he played) this semester so it would be quite fitting. Still, I hope Dorsey is not cut off of the team. Should Alex Smith get injured or continue struggling (hope that does not happen) I’d like to see Dorsey in there. Then after Dorsey, we can have Dilfer and the Bachelor.

Dilfer would be a great pick-up for us… A mentor for Alex Smith and a very solid back-up… then I say let Dorsey and Pickett fight it out for the #3 and cut Palmer – I could care less about Palmer! A 6th round pick is great for Dilfer!

that would be a great pickup dilfer led the ravens to a SB why couldnt he help mentor our qb to do the same and i just had a little question im not tryin to change the subject but does anyone know if rice is going to sign a 1 day contract i know we tried to last year but nolan said in the the off season so it wouldnt cost them a roster spot

Dilfer would be a great backup for us. Bringing back all of our icons (i.e. Montana, Young, Rice, Craig, Lott, Brent Jones, etc.)for their expertise would be a great morality booster for all of our new young players.

We should bring him in considering that our backups now are worthless in the experience department and most likely wouldnt do anything if alex were to get hurt like he did last year. Dilfer can teach him the little things and Turner can mold him into a quality quarterback .. watching his development should be interesting

does anyone know when we will sign rice for a 1 day contract so he can retire a 9er

why does everyone like cody pickett? he is awful when he played, and there’s no need for him to be on the team. sure he may have potential, but no more than smith, or even dorsey. what was he like 1 for 16 against chicago?
2 days after the fact.awful

I can’t think of to many QB’s that would have done any better passing the ball during the Chicago game. The wind was insane and the passing play selection was insane for the weather. I think its nuts how Alex Smith can suck over and over and people say give him a chance, then Pickett comes in after not even taking snaps on the 1st and 2nd teams and plays decent one game and then sucks the other and people want to give him the boot. If teams played there starting QB’s based on talent instead of what some suit pays them you would see a very different situation in the NFL.

fuck tht dilfer will be a great back up for alex smith and can teach him some thigns,, r u guys nuts,, hes proven and way better than dorsey or picket will ever be which isnt sayin much but still….
1 day after the fact.Johan said:
but dorsey did much better than pickett, yet more people want to get rid of pickett than dorsey? that doesnt make any sense. dorsey can succeed if given a chance, just look at what he did in college. its not like from college to the nfl he got worse.

it’s sad when the 49ers are excited about the possibility of getting Trent Dilfer. We should have brought Garcia back.

Since Dilfer probably gives the team a better chance at winning right now, this 2006 season, does he start? Or, is he simply being added to the roster to coach up Alex Smith from his QB rating of 40.8?
Think about it…Smith is the starter, even if he comes out losing his first 6-8 games. he won’t get benched. So what is Dilfer for? To mop up a few victories only when Smith gets injured? This made sense last year, when Dilfer would have started and Smith was being groomed while sitting on the bench, but now that Smith is the starting QB, Dilfer doesn’t add anything (unless you think Smith needs better coaching).

You bring in Dilfer as a backup and nothing more. We need a vetern guy behind Smith to be there if Smith goes down, but smith is the starter hands down. He needs PT and he’s our guy. The only way he’s going to get better is to play… Do we really want another QB out there learning how to play when our number 1 goes down though? Hell no.

Yo RE I like that thought about steve young but get him to coach him I wish he will join the coaching staff as well as jerry rice but I know they rather work under eddie debartalo there I hope I spelled his name right, but anyway if we get dilfer then thats cool but he ain’t worth giving up alot but we need to get another valuable CB or two,ty law maybe, does that ring a bell.

dilfer would be nice, cut palmer, and leave pickett on the roster for special teams, start working him out in the secondary.

Yes Rob… Dilfer did play for the Ravens and Won a Super Bowl with them as their starting QB as well!
4 hours after the fact. The 49ers are not thinking about bringing this guy in to be our starting QB… I would strictly be to help in the development of Alex Smith and in case Smith went down with an injury
I’ts a great idea and would be well worth the 5th round pick we would most likely be trading for him.
Look at the Bengals… They had Carson Palmer, but still had Kitna as well to help him develop… During the playoffs last year when Palmer went down, Kitna came in and almost won that game for the Bengals… Having a Veteran QB @ #2 is a very solid plan!
I cant wait to log on in the next couple of days or weeks/whenever and see that we traded for Dilfer… GO NINERS!

Dorsey and Barlow both suck. I would trade them both for a box of cheese-its! Getting Dilfer for either one of them, both of them, or a 5th or 6th round pick would be a steal.
