This info was reported late last week, by Matt Maiocco of the Press Democrat. It is now official:
The San Francisco 49ers signed free agent safety Chad Williams on Wednesday to a contract. Terms of the deal were not released.
Williams began his career with the Baltimore Ravens as a sixth-round selection in the 2002 draft. He played in 64 games with the Ravens, making five starts, and registered 158 tackles, eight interceptions, three forced fumbles and 5.5 sacks.
The 5-foot-9, 207-pound safety also has three defensive touchdowns, including a 98-yard interception return for a score. Williams also spent time on Baltimore’s special teams.

i think many coaches, including nolan, tend to sign players that the have coached in the past. What they don’t understand is that there are 30ish teams of players in the league that he hasn’t coached, which may be as good, or better, than the players on the team that he has coached. M. Douglas was brutal, and i think chad williams will be brutal as well.

Of course coaches that were former co-ordinators sign the players that they have worked with. They are familiar with them and know how to effective use them. Also, it is not always easy to lure players to a 4-12 team, so he is using his repor with former players to sign them. And hey, anyone who has the ability to start for the ravens can, at the very least, be a solid backup and add depth to our seconday. Good job Nolan.

Anyone who has played 4 years on the Ravens Defense should be good enough to contribute on ours. 8 int’s and 3 defensive Td’s ain’t shabby….I wonder if Ben Emanuel and Keith Lewis will even make the club. We’ve got a lot of Safeties now (Parrish, Adams, Williams, Hudson, Lewis, Emanuel, & Vaughn)!

Great pick up, I hope he starts or plays back up. We need to trim down and get rid of some safeties. As long as we keep Parrish, Adams, Lewis and Williams, I will be happy.

trim down? we haven’t even had one mini-camp, let alone training camp.

No doubt. The only advantage Douglas and Williams have is that they know the system. I am sure they are still held to the same standard. If grama could play, I am sure Nolan would try her out too. It’s the safety that will perform up to the end of preseason that will win the job. We don’t see all the film. We really don’t know what the coaches are seeing. I got faith. You got faith?
