With the 6th pick in the 6th round, No. 175 overall, the Niners select WR Delanie Walker…
Height: 6-1, Weight: 241, 40 Speed: 4.62
Position: Wide Receiver, College: Central Missouri State
SUMMARY
Walker is clearly a good athlete with the quickness, burst and playing speed that is hard to find is such a well-built receiver, but he is not a consistently productive receiver. While he has shown the hands to make tough catches when he stays focused on the ball, he is not a natural receiver and often drops passes because he fights the ball—struggles the most with passes within his frame. Is a very well-built receiver with the size and playing strength to keep his feet against hard hits, runs through arm and grab tackles, and breaks tackles consistently. Despite his athleticism, Walker does not run good routes and it hinders his ability to get open despite having physical tools to do so. Overall, a team would really want to try and develop Walker’s physical tools, but would be cautious not to over-draft him because most players with his issues never develop their skills. Has the physical tools to become a starting receiver if he can learn to get off the ball better, run more precise routes and catch the ball more consistently. In the end, he may not develop into the player he is capable of being because few receivers really improve their hands once they get to the NFL, and without doing that he will not last long.
STRONG POINTS
Walker is a big receiver with good natural athleticism. Once he catches the ball he accelerates to full speed fast and has the playing speed to score long touchdowns. Has the quick feet and agility to stop and start quickly to make tacklers miss, and has the balance to keep his feet against hard hits and gains yards after contact. Has flashed the ability to reach away from the body to make the tough catch at times. Is a good kickoff returner whose acceleration, playing speed, strength and balance make him dangerous when running with the ball.
WEAKNESSES
Despite natural athleticism, Walker is not a natural pass catcher and drops too many balls. On passes within his frame, he has a tendency to try and body catch the ball, but too often lets the ball into his body and ends up fighting it. While he has good acceleration, Walker does not explode off the ball into route. He runs choppy and raw routess which hinders his ability to get separation from defender despite the natural quickness and speed.

i think we need to adress defence a little more before we take another reciever both offence an defence were last in the leauge last year our offence has improved wit additions of bryant allen an davis our defence need alot of work so before day is done we need big players who are ready to make an impact now ok

Screw the defense, its special teams that win championships! Teams that use the draft to fill holes on offense and defense never win the big game. You guys should stop whining and never question the coaches or GM. Come on look at what Norv Turner has done as a coach..hes awesome. And for all the guys that think they are GM’s and made fun of Donahue in the past I bet you all feel stupid now…Hopefully the next PBA arent’ recievers also…

Dude, Mike:
Defense is spelled with an “s”. You also dont know how to spell receiver. You really should consider getting that GED.
This was a wasted pick. Another “project” receiver? We’ve even already taken a project kick returner this weekend…

This draft is pleasing to me, even though I don’t understand one of the picks. My view of last year’s season was that the 9ers had average talent on defense, and, after the injury prone players went out on offense, the worst offense in 49er history.
In my personal opinion I think it is the 49ers’ duty to make sure we don’t see an offense like that ever again, especailly not in back to back years, even if it means taking a half a step backwards on defense. This means that if offensive players are there that they want, they should take them. This means they should over pay a couple free agents, so be it, there was a 17.5 million raise in the cap. I still think they should have worked out a deal for walker.
There will still be june cuts and the 49ers can patch up the defense a little more with 1-2 year contracts on veterens, not strapping the cap longterm, and allowing for Smith to have a better offense to get his protection, receiving core, running game, and most importantly confidence up.
This draft for sure is showing that Nolan doesn’t have the same “hazy eyed” view of the niner’s receiving core. I keep hearing people say we have 9 receivers. And? Before this draft there was Bryant, a solid NFL starter, not a pro bowler. And Battle, a still struggling converted WR who is injury prone. Who else? Please top telling me any of the other receivers is worth anything towards winning a game in the NFL.
The step back in defensive talent should be made up for by the increase in offensive production leading to longer drives and an even time of possession. No more games struggling to get a first down. No more games feeling like I’m watching a trainwreck in progress.

Defense and defence are both acceptable.
It is a curious pick, though.

From ESPN.com: Central Missouri State WR Delanie Walker (No. 175), and played at a small school, so he is going to need time to develop before making an impact. However, this is a strong pick for two reasons. The first is he can provide some much needed depth this year, and the second is upside. Walker has the wide frame to shield defenders from the ball and he is a powerful open-field runner that can produce after the catch. Now he needs to work on catching the ball more consistently and running sharper routes.

Speeed? Here is some inclination to his speed: 40 Speed: 4.62*. HOLY SHIT! This guy is as big as he is and still is this quick? Hell I do not know about you guys but he sounds like he will do some damage for sure. Walker also said he can’t wait to flatline and pancake some safeties. I like this pick more than the Brandon Williams one. I really am confused as to why we passed up Bing in the 3rd AND 4th rounds, that would have made sense. But hell, this looks good too.

Delanie Walker will make a impact to the 49ers special teams and offense, i would not be surprised if he started by the end of the season.
