Todd McShay of Scouts Inc is reporting that the 49ers are “flat-out committed” to Maryland TE Vernon Davis. One of the reasons is because the Niners turned down a proposal from the Broncos, who wanted to trade up to the sixth pick. Instead of making that deal, which would have allowed Denver to land Davis, the 49ers traded one pick each in the second and third rounds to gain an additional first-round pick (No. 22).
With the extra first rounder the Niners are now able to use their first pick on Davis, then address one of their several defensive needs 16 selections later.
There has been some speculation that the Packers are considering Davis with the fifth pick. If that becomes the case, Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk would be San Francisco’s choice, but only after it attempted to move out of the sixth pick.
Here is a recent mention on Alex Smith from ESPN’s Seth Wickersham.
Speaking of last year’s draft, I¹m hearing out of San Francisco that Alex Smith has put on 10-15 pounds of muscle and is “throwing the (expletive) out of the ball” in passing drills, according to one onlooker. Of course, it’s only in shorts and shirts. But that¹s good news for Niners’ fans who watched Smith average less than 100 yards passing per start, and threw 11 picks and only one touchdown. But he has time: Smith isn’t even 22 yet.
Scott Rabalais, of the Advocate, reports LSU DL Claude Wroten said that the San Francisco 49ers are one of two NFL teams showing the most interest in him. Wroten expects to go anywhere from the late first to late third rounds, but knows he could have gone much higher. Wroten was arrested Jan. 5 in Monroe on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
“I know if this incident hadn’t happened I would have been a top 20 pick,” Wroten said Tuesday, April 25.
