04.18.06 – Leave Kwame Alone? Why Should I?

Well, by now you have noticed Tony Farmer’s article about Kwame Harris. I’m wondering, IS Tony Farmer Kwame Harris? If you have not read it yet, you may want to before reading this one.

Before I start, I want to say that Tony Farmer is a good guy. I like Tony and enjoy his articles, but come on now! Let me reprint the quote everyone is upset about. I’ll remind you that it is not confirmed that this quote is from Kwame, but let us assume it it, as we did for Tony’s article…

When asked if he likes Football, Kwame replied, “It’s OK. I mean, I am pretty good at it, but I have a lot of interests, too. A lot of days, when I am getting ready for practice, I would prefer to be back home playing my piano.”

Tony argues that this should bother NO-ONE! That it’s OK that we have a player that would rather not be playing Football. Are you KIDDING ME? He then goes on to make all kinds of excuses from him. Saying that because he’s not out raping little girls, it’s OK. I didn’t even know we were talking about that. See for yourself. Here’s a quote from him.

Says Tony Farmer: “You know what though, maybe people are right, and Harris should find a new more masculine hobby. He could practice assault like Washington safety Sean Taylor. He could take up pumpkin carving lessons (if you know what I mean) from Ravens’ linebacker Ray Lewis. Or maybe former Packers’ tight end Mark Chmura can teach him how to rape young girls. The sad part of this whole thing is that 49er fans are acting as if Harris’ “crime” belongs in the same sentence as the others. It does not.”

Tony, I don’t give a rats ass that he likes to play the Piano. I like to play the Piano too. It’s not the fact that it’s the Piano that bothers me. It’s that he would rather be doing that MORE than playing football. And I’m not even saying he’s a bad person. I’m just saying that since he came into the NFL, he SUCKS at Football! And that this quote shows he doesn’t like Football much, and one HAS to wonder if that effects his play.

And don’t compare Football to your work, or mine. We aren’t getting paid Mills to PLAY A GAME. Football is something that you have to LOVE in order to truly be great at. My job isn’t. I’m a good Food Service Manager, though I don’t like it at all. No one does. Football is something you have to love. Just ask all the great players, they won’t say “it’s OK”. Ask Brett Favre, who is still thinking of coming back, though everyone knows he’s past his prime and should quit. No matter how much he loves his hobby, he love football more. He doesn’t need the money, why would he still be thinking of coming back if he didn’t love it. Ask Joe Montana, Steve Young, and pretty much anyone who was great. They will tell you they LOVE it. No Tony, it is not the same thing as you not wanting to be at the office.

So, is Kwame Harris a bad person because he likes the Piano? No. Is he a bad person because he likes it more than Football? Again, no. That doesn’t make him a bad person, but the fact of the matter, is it DOES make him a pretty crappy Football player, and someone whom the 49ers do not need on their team!
