The San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker T.J. Slaughter on Monday, his fifth NFL team in five seasons.
Slaughter spent last season with the New Orleans Saints, making 10 tackles and one start in 10 appearances. A third-round draft choice by Jacksonville in 2000, he spent three seasons with the Jaguars before joining Green Bay and then spending the 2004 season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played for 49ers coach Mike Nolan.

IMO - This is a solid signing for us… Not only does it give us some depth, but anybody who get register 106 tackles in 11 games can definitely be used somewhere! I Like It!

If he was any good he would have played, especially in GB.

obviously nolan saw something in him, i hope it pans out

Your right Stoney… hes probably horrible and the only reason he averaged 11 tackles per game is because he “accidently” must have bumped into the guy and knocked him over huh???
4 hours after the fact.Come on… sometimes guys just don’t fit into a system right or may not be liked by a coach… heck most of the time theres may be someone better at that position on the team… Doesn’t mean the back up is crap though!
DEPTH is DEPTH

Hey BurlyD…where you getting your stats?
61-54-59-24-9-22=229…....those are TJ’s tackle totals for his career starting in 2000. That is including assists. In 2005….he played in 10 games for the Saints…..22 total tackles…and 1 INT. Not really making my nipples hard here.

Is this like another Javin Hunter Signing by M.N.

??? I read those stats from the 49ers.com website article? My bad if its incorrect, you would think they would have it posted correctly???
49ers.com site says – “His most productive season was in 2002 when he started in 11 games and finished with 106 total tackles”
Anyways, regardless of what it is… the guys good depth for us!

Well… I just read that on 49er.com just now. I got my stats from TJ’s profile on NFL.com…...I’d like to know which is correct….it is a big difference.
5 hours after the fact.Vin said:
His profile stats may just be solo tackles. Defensive players have total tackles, and solo tackles for stats.
5 hours after the fact.Jason said:
Yes I am aware…..i mentioned it was TOTAL including assists. Thanks.

I don’t know, but his name sounds hardcore and he looks like an ass kicker on his profile pic. Both of thoes things are important in my book.

Ive watched at least 5 jacksonville games where he has played and let me tell you just from watching him…he plays hard, hits even harder…i think hes a good pick up…i believe he has trouble with coverage but if we use him like terrell suggs from baltimore, we wont even have to worry about that
15 hours after the fact.by the way, hardest hit i saw last year was TJ Slaughter on a Kickoff on monday night football
stoney said:
BurlyD_83 – Is it just coincidence he did not fit into 4 different systems with 4 different coaches. Depth is depth and hopefully it pans out! I just hope they paid appropriatly.
Post 17: Are you indicating he has the skills of Suggs, if so why did he play ST and only have 11 starts in 4 seasons?

He’s supposed to be good.
Grade 64
Expert’s Take Slaughter is versatile in that he can play both inside and outside linebacker positions but he better at the outside position because of his overall size. He has good enough speed and quickness to make plays from sideline to sideline. He is an instinctive player who does a great job of pursuing the ball. He has good recognition skill, he reads and reacts to the ball and he has a good burst. He has good range, he does an adequate job on his zone drops and he has above average man to man skills. He does a good job of avoiding the traffic, getting around blocks and he has a good knack of being around the ball. He does a decent job of shedding blockers. He is a good tackler, will breakdown, wrap you up and he will seldom miss a tackle when he has the opportunity. He can be a disruptive blitzer at times. The problem with Slaughter he is undersize. He does not have the weight and strength to hold up at the point of attack. Teams will attack him in the running game and he does get off blocks well and he will get overpowered or engulf by bigger offensive lineman at the second level. He is a lot quicker than he is fast. He is very average in coverage. He lacks good overall speed, he struggles when he has to plant and drive to the ball and he lacks good change of direction skills. He is not smooth in transition and he will struggle when he has to cover the top backs in this league out of backfield man to man. He is not a great playmaker when the ball is in the air. Overall, Slaughter has a lot of ability but he has not lived up to expectation. He is still relatively young but he needs to take it to the next level if he still wants to be around.
Grade explanation 60-64: Good Backup
17 hours after the fact. This is a player who is really on the bubble and only starts because of a team’s deficiency at the position. ... He lacks complete overall skills, and although he will battle, he will hinder his team’s ability to play at a championship level if forced to be in the starting lineup consistently over a 16-game season. ... This player needs to be a solid contributor in the kicking game or show great versatility at his position to keep his roster spot. ... He is a player you don’t mind having on your team, but you are always looking to upgrade. From Scouts Inc.

This is a quality signing. Every team needs good EXPERIENCED back ups. No team can stay completely healthy over 16 games and having someone battle tested will help us in the long run. Especially at LB. We cannot let these past years and the trauma of Donahue mess up our pursuit of a quality TEAM. Will moves like this help immediately? NO. But moves like this get us over the hump when the injury bug bites. Just like signing W.Harris and S.Davis at corner does. This way we are not signing guys off the street like last year. Give the guy a break.
