From John Clayton:
Decision time: As much as teams think the 49ers will take Maryland tight end Vernon Davis with the sixth pick in the first round, there are others who are hearing they could go for Texas defensive back Michael Huff. Huff can play safety or cornerback, and the 49ers have cornerback as one of their main need positions. Davis may merit the sixth pick in the draft because of his rare athletic ability—at 254 pounds, he’s able to run a 4.38-second 40—but that’s a lot of money to pay a tight end. Of course, how many tight ends have this kind of talent?

I love my boy “Huff Daddy” but I’ve got to go with “The Duke.” He’s just too good to pass up. I think Huff will be a Pro-Bowler first at corner and then later in his career as a safety, but I’d still take “The Duke”

Screw getting Huff, its all about Davis. Does logic no longer register in San Fransisco? The problem with the niners the last 2 years has not been the defense, its the offensive line. With Larry Allen that is somewhat improved but we have to “move the chains.” Davis will give Alex Smith a “security blanket” just being the threat that he would be at TE. Not only that, but this is a guy who can turn a small dump off or toss into a huge play. I am hoping we get Davis, draft Bing in the second round, an OLB in the 3rd round and trade the other third round pick for Javon Walker. Yeah, I know I am dreaming but how awesome would that be.
DAVIS PLEASE!

AJ im thinking the same thing… I dont understand why they would want to do anything else. I would take Bing and the Duke over huff every single time. Hopefully they are just trying to cover up what they really want to do.

Go Davis(te) in the 1st, Carpenter(lb) in the second, and Watkins(s) or Bing in the third if he slides down.

gooo with huff,, way more important on this team, we literally have nobody int he secondary besides tony parrish, and if u guys want to rely on ****in mike rumph and shawntee spencer again so be it. Just think about how every QB threw 300 last year and how pathedic we were against the pass. Plus we have Eric Johnson, we can go with a TE like Marcedes Lewis or Leonard Pope in the second. Wait check that i dont even want one of them in the second, i want either O-line like Marcus McNeil or Eric Winston, or a linebacker like Demeco Ryans or Boby Carpenter, or even a wide-out like Sinorice Moss or Derek Hagan. Then get my man Anthony Fasano in the 3rd who has decent speed, great hands, and argubly the best blocking TE in the draft. Going VD in the first to me just doesnt make tht much sence.

I still like the idea of getting Denver’s 2 picks for our 1. How does Chad Greenway and Tye Hill or Tamba Hali , etc.etc sound?
9 hours after the fact.Anonymous said:
Shane, you’re an idiot. Why do we need any more guards or tackles on the first day when we spent 2 first day picks last season on those positions. Second, Demeco Ryans and Pope are absolute trash. You’re the kid who jumps on any bandwagon just because it’s passing by.

I’m going with Huff…we atleast have EJ when he’s healthy…or CB spot is looking scary

The thing is that there will be no one like Vernon Davis in next years draft…kid is an anomaly…players like him come around once in a decade… 4.38 40… can bench 480 lbs …. and vertical jumps 41 inches….just think about that for a second
11 hours after the fact.michael huff is good…but there will always be someone like that. Hes not amazing…hes not out of the ordinary..we can pick someone like that up next draft.
Also think about this…our last 3 signings….TJ Slaughter, Sammy Davis (trade for Woods), and Walt Harris… 2 cornerbacks and a linebacker…
you ask me, they are passing on AJ Hawk and Michael Huff and getting ready to draft Vernon Davis
Benji said:
Huff is out of the ordinary in my opinion. He´s listed as the BEST cornerback and the BEST safety in this year´s draft! Who else was that amazing?
11 hours after the fact.He kinda become an impact player like Ed Reed or Brian Dawkins! Yes, please take Huff or tarde down for Denver´s two first round picks!

our defense is not as bad as the numbers said, but when you have a 1,2,3 and out offense, its obvious thats the DEF will slow down and get exhausted, thats why davis is the option, cuz hes the one who can move the chains and and make Alex Smith more comfortable
12 hours after the fact.stoney said:
This is a tough decision because a 32 def with an ol’ lay style pass def we could use a hard hitting, solid coverage DB. But his performance in the Rose Bowl was not BEST CB or Best Safety. I admit one game should not define a player and he has the skills plus DB is a logical position to dump 6th pick cash.
Davis a freak. It was evident with EJ out last season that TE is critical for the 9’ers. Chains must move and you have to keep the safety and center of the opposing defense honest. In addition EJ can not stay health and if he did, EJ and The Duke combo, unstoppable.
Decision: VD & Bing (cheaper version of Huff, but will still jack you)
12 hours after the fact.E Bogan said:
I agree with MJ from above. Look you guys, just take a moment to think about this. The9ers have no talent on the offensive side of the ball. Case in point they averaged 14pts oer game last year. They were luck to win 4 games. They need to draft Davis, use Eric Johnson on the other side and run a double tight end set as Turner has done before, the oline looks better with adding Allen, go single back with Gore, bring in Javon Walker giving up one of the 3rd round selections, go with Bing in the 2nd, and a linebacker/d-end in the 3rd. Then you’ll have something to build on! Davis is going to be a superstar! An ungardle presence in the secondary demanding doubles to free up other. He can turn a 2nd and 8 to a first down and more. He will be the best player available a #6.

I don’t know what John Clayton is smoking but wasn’t Winslow drafted three years ago at the same spot. Davis is far more a superior athlete than Winslow, he seems more mature and a hard worker. We should Take Davis, then get Carpenter in the second, and acording to Mel Kiper Darrel Bing WILL STILL be available in the third round then we should trade our second third or fourth round pick to Green Bay for Walker. With thoose additions we could be in the playoff next year. Our defense was bad because they were on the field 80 % of the time. If Smith is our guy we have to give him the chance of succeed or we’ll be in the same sport four years from now…
TAKE DAVIS
!!

Davis is just FAR TOO GOOD to pass on.
14 hours after the fact.J-Roc said:
I agree with E Bogan, we need an offensive presence like V.Davis to move the chains and open up the running game. 2nd needs to be an OLB/DE because there are just too many good ones there on the first day and a Lawson/Carpenter/DeMeco could slip. Bing may be there in the 3rd, if not grab another saftey and get a vet through FA. This is not a hard decision if Nolan does the right thing
15 hours after the fact.Nick said:
The secondary is only as good as the pressure being put on the quarterback, drafting a corner/saftey at 6 would turn him into one of the bigger busts of the recent 49er drafts…
go with davis if it comes down to it.
15 hours after the fact.JJP said:
Draft Davis @ #7 after we let OAK have either Leinart or Young (pick up extra 2nd or 3rd) then Bing or Simpson with our 2nd. With our 3rd Rd picks we need to get a LB and DL. I may want to keep our 3rd (both) and 4th (too valuable). Say we trade Derrick Hamilton and our 5th for Javon Walker (both coming from ACL injuries).
16 hours after the fact.Dom said:
Whether we draft Huff or Davis we will still come out winners because they both are awesome. But think about this, Alex Smith 1/2 the time last year couldn’t even grip the ball to throw it. So if he can’t grip it, then Smith won’t be able to throw it, thus Davis will never be able to get the ball. Whats that i hear? CODY, CODY, CODY
!

At #6, Davis or Hawk….If we trade down, Huff would be nice at picks 10-15. Getting both of Denver’s 1st rounders for #6 might be too much for our boys to pass up…if available!

“Draft Davis @ #7 after we let OAK have either Leinart or Young (pick up extra 2nd or 3rd”
you crazy? theres no way the raiders are gonna trade up one spot…that is just absurd
17 hours after the fact.they know there is no way we are going to draft a quarterback so how are we gonna bluff to get a pick outa them
another thing….everyone thinks huff is amazing…have you even watched him play? hes quick and tall but the guy tackles WAY too high…go watch the tapes…he hits the ball carrier in the shoulder pads everytime…and rolls them to the ground..he is only 200 pounds and as a safety that will never fly in the nfl…
J-Roc said:
Hey Anonymous, I’m not sure the Raiders will go for it either but if they really want a QB they would have trade up one spot to us just to compete against any other team trying to trade up to our spot. I.E. if OAK really wants Young or Lienart or whoever they better call us to see if ARZ or MIN or some other team isn’t trying to get ahead of them. I have thought all along we could hold a QB for ransom to get and extra 2nd or 3rd. (or poss 2 1st from DEN)
18 hours after the fact.AJVIII said:
VD would be the better pick because we need more weapons on offense to move the chains. I love EJ, but if he spends one more season on injured reserve then we should cut his ass
We need production out of all of our players!
22 hours after the fact.Cole Ruggle said:
You have to take Davis cause our offence needs improving & our O-line might finally live up to its potential, which means Smith will actually get time to look down field for receivers & with Davis on the field it means that smith will have no more 9 for 30 games with 98 yards & 2 ints. plus we made the signing of AB & if we trade to get Jeavon then I think that we will have a pretty dam good receiving corps thers always going to be players like Huff out there but players like Davis well thats rare so Nolan dont screw up again like you did last year by taking Smith, althoug it should be a no brainer to you take Davis.
