The San Francisco 49ers signed linebacker T.J. Slaughter on Monday, his fifth NFL team in five seasons.
Slaughter spent last season with the New Orleans Saints, making 10 tackles and one start in 10 appearances. A third-round draft choice by Jacksonville in 2000, he spent three seasons with the Jaguars before joining Green Bay and then spending the 2004 season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he played for 49ers coach Mike Nolan.
Jeremy Green of Scouts Inc. recently wrote an article talking about Draftees Character Flaws. In this instance he was talking about a when a player just flat-out doesn’t like football. This is the case when the player participates because he has talent, but deep down has no desire to be out on the field. Below Green talks about a certain player who he felt had this flaw. He never came out and said who he was but he labeled him ‘The Piano Man’
One of the most interesting predraft meetings that I was ever involved in was at the 2003 scouting combine in Indianapolis. An offensive lineman in that draft class had a ton of talent but the biggest concern was: How much does he like football? When asked point blank, “Do you like football?” his response was, “It’s OK. I mean, I am pretty good at it, but I have a lot of interests, too. A lot of days, when I am getting ready for practice, I would prefer to be back home playing my piano.”
This guy just couldn’t talk enough about how much he enjoyed playing his piano, and every conversation ended up somehow getting back to that subject. We ended up passing on the player, but he was drafted in the first round. The truth of the matter is, some days when you watch him play, you get the feeling he would rather be back at home playing that piano. ”
Now as Niner fans, we all know who he is talking about. Three years later it looks like he still is more interested in playing the piano.
