Update: 7:06 – Len Pasquerell is reporting that three-year veteran fullback Jeremi Johnson, who had discussed a long-term deal with the Cincinnati Bengals in recent weeks but been unable to reach an agreement, on Thursday afternoon signed his one-year restricted free agent qualifying offer of $721,000.

Update: 8:59 – (04.08.06) For those who need more confirmation on my previous update. Same thing I said yesterday, this from the Sacramento Bee
Despite a report to the contrary, the 49ers are not considering signing restricted free agent Jeremi Johnson, a fullback with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Update: 12:46 – 04.07.06 – Per our sources. There are no truths to the Niners persuing Jeremi Johnson. This is mainly talk from Johnson’s agent trying to drum up a long term deal from the Bengals for his client. The Niners would not give up a 4th round pick for such a low-impact position.

04.06.06—Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com is reporting that the Bengals aren’t the only ones talking to fullback Jeremi Johnson about a long-term deal. Agent Peter Schaffer confirmed Thursday the 49ers have explored the possibility of signing Johnson, a restricted free agent, to an offer sheet.
If the Niners were to sign Johnson it would cost them a 4th round draft pick.

not worth the 4th round pick we are picking number 3 in the round.

Why wouldn’t it be worth it? There aren’t many good blocking FB’s in the draft. Hetherington is already old and Beasley is gone. Someone has to plow a path for our RB’s, and talent wise he is worth at least a 4th.

I would give them a fifth rd pick
7 days after the fact.stephen said:
i agree that the 4th is too high to give up. with that pick we will be able to get someone who should have been a day 1 pick but slipped because of team needs…and because we have so many needs they probably fit one of ours

I’ll give them a ticket to one of our home games, and a bottle of Napa Valley wine for Johnson

if you think about it we probaly would have picked up afb then

Yeah, plz sign this man. C Hetherington is old, and Johnson is a real veteran and knows how to open up the holes. It would be great if we sign him, then Gore and Johnson would do damage. Give them the 4th or 5th round for Johnson.

the 4th rounder is a compensation pick you cant choose to give a 5th rounder instead.
7 days after the fact.thizzel said:
our compensation pick was a seventh roundere..#254..right before mr. irrelevent..yippie with that pick
7 days after the fact.thizzel said:
and hell naw i wouldnt give our fourth for him.. jason is right..pick number 3 overall of day two..c’mon..its pretty much a third roud pick if you look at it..
7 days after the fact.Aaron said:
I wouldn’t do it since the fullback is being phased out of the pro game. Beasley, Hetherington, it didn’t seem to matter last year why would it this year.
7 days after the fact.We can give a 5th rounder if Bengals accept. Just like Lloyd was supposed to be in exchange for a 1st rounder…
Sammy Chera said:
Aaron we ran a completely different offense last year. Just because it didn’t matter in Mike McCarthy’s offense, doesn’t mean it won’t matter in Norv Turner’s offense.
7 days after the fact.Aaron said:
Chera, I know what you’re saying and I agree. I just have been listening to the reports how the fullback is being replaced by the H-back and agree that is the direction to go.
7 days after the fact.McCarthy’s system is supposed to rely on the traditional fullback. I think it was ineffective because of the offensive line, which was ineffective because of injury, having a new qurterback doesn’t help, etc.
My point is there are so many things to consider it makes my head spin and I realize I shouldn’t be giving advise…
Lance said:
by compensation pick he means they gave him a 1 year tender and you have to give up the pick the round he was selected in when drafted (4th round)by signing a restricted free agent we must give either that a 1st round or 1st and 3rd round

Per my sources, the 49ers would be well-served to add a beautiful Bengals jockstrap to their collections. How do you know this, Erickson. YOU don’t have inside ties to the 49ers organization like I do. When I was stalk—...err, I mean talking to Scotty M last weekend, he told me to get lost, and then told me that the 49ers would LOVE to have a wonderful young man such as Jeremi on the team. So stop making up hateful remarks about a wonderful young player who neeeds our love and support as 49ER FANS.

Jeremi Johnson is a great fullback, and i think he is worth a 4th round pick. Hes a proven fullback. I dont think you guys realize how important a good fullback is. With the absents of Fred Beasly I would be happy if we did that. With a decent line, a good blocking TE, Jeremi Johnson would be a great addition for Frnak Gore, and Kevan Barlow. Full back is one of the most underrated positions and we dont even have one.

Dude… it’s from 49ernews.com… take it with a grain of salt. 49ernews is a nice “entertaining” site for when you’re desperate for any kind of news, even if it’s wrong…
Like don’t get me wrong they’re great for some stories (eg. Antonio Bryant, that was a p**ser!)... but they also like spreading disinformation to catch other sites out. So, I dunno… if the Bengals official website ran a story about it, I’m failry sure that it is legit.

Yes Len P. mentioned it in his tip sheet. That is the first mention in this post. But I asked my source who is close to the Niners and they are not pursuing Johnson. But of course Len P is always right…(rolls eyes)
Milkman…I have no reason to spread disinformation. You must be ‘desperate’ for news if you are here.

“Three-year veteran fullback Jeremi Johnson on Thursday completed a five-year, $7.528 million extension with the Bengals that, in new money, made Johnson the highest-paid fullback in football. The deal came hours after he signed his one-year, $721,600 restricted free-agent tender.
...
Johnson also flirted briefly this offseason with signing a restricted free-agent offer sheet with the San Francisco 49ers. The new deal replaces his 2006 contract and adds five more years, keeping him signed through 2011.”
– Len Pasquarelli, ESPN
Damn, if this guy is indeed as good as his contract is paying him, maybe we should have traded for him!
