Santa Clara, CA – The San Francisco 49ers announced today they have traded WR Rashaun Woods to the San Diego Chargers in exchange for three-year NFL veteran CB Sammy Davis.
Davis, (6-0, 195), originally joined San Diego as a first-round draft pick out of Texas A&M in 2003. Davis has started in 30 of 44 NFL games and has accumulated 122 total tackles, three interceptions, one sack and 20 passes defensed during his three-year career in San Diego. San Diego utilized Davis as a right corner as well as a nickel corner.Said head coach Mike Nolan on the trade, “This was an opportunity for us to strengthen ourselves at a position of need with a proven NFL starter. After strengthening the wide receiver position with the addition of free agents Antonio Bryant and Bryan Gilmore, we felt it was important to focus on other areas to improve our team. Davis will be able to step in from day one and challenge for a starting role.”
Woods originally joined the 49ers as a first-round draft pick in 2004 out of Oklahoma State. He spent the majority of last season on injured reserve with a thumb injury that occurred during practice.

What was San Diego thinking? I have seen Davis get burnt a couple of times, but come on. Great trade for the 9ers, they could have traded Woods for a used sack of balls and it would have been a good deal. But with out luck, Woods will go for 1000 this year.

Good trade for the 9ers. We traded dead weght for someone who has actual played in the NFL. Sounds like it will be Davis and not Huff for the first selection.

The trade of 49ers wide receiver Rashaun Woods for Chargers cornerback Sammy Davis shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Both were first-round disappointments. Niners coach Mike Nolan might have cut or traded Woods last year, but the cap hit would have too steep. Now, they let him go and take only a $111,000 cap hit even though Woods is only entering his third season. The Chargers have given Davis every chance to be the starting cornerback, but he never felt comfortable in that role. He ended up with four starts last season and played 31 percent of the Chargers’ defensive downs. The Chargers called every team in the league trying to shop Davis. They were asking for a third-round draft pick. The 49ers have been thin at cornerback since releasing Ahmed Plummer, so Davis was a good gamble.
The Chargers may not be done trading. Two more players are on block although nothing might not happen as quickly as the Davis deal with the 49ers. The Chargers are shopping linebacker Donnie Edwards and safety Hanik Milligan. For Edwards, the Chargers want a second-round choice. For Milligan, one of the game’s best special-teams players, the Chargers want a fifth-rounder. Both players are entering the final years of their contracts and will be free agents in 2007. Milligan has been complaining about getting a new contract and the Chargers think he might hold out, one of the reasons he’s being shopped.
Giving up on Woods is not a strong endorsement for recent 49ers draft. He becomes the fourth first-round pick to leave this offseason. Julian Peterson and Andre Carter signed for big money with the Seahawks and Redskins, respectively. Plummer was cut and hasn’t landed with anyone. The only first-rounders still left on the 49ers roster are defensive end Bryant Young, safety Mike Rumph, tackle Kwame Harris and quarterback Alex Smith.
One of the reasons the Chargers like Woods is they thought he could be another Keenan McCardell. Woods had hamstring problems that plagued him during his first season. He had other injuries with the 49ers last season. Not being a fast receiver, Woods lost the confidence of the 49ers coaches by looking too slow on the field. The Chargers plan to put Woods behind McCardell and let him learn. McCardell could teach him enough efficient route running to make this a good trade for the Chargers down the road.

i kind of like the trade and i kinda don’t like it. finally woods gets healthy i was lookin forward to seein if he could do anything. on the other hand i think sammy davis has the ability to pull it together, but i was really lookin forward to see if Woods could make it happen. Looks like we’ll never know but it’s coo i think we got a good deal. Oh yeah and we should get D Eddy that foo would be off the hook and he wouldn’t be a bad replacement for J Petey.
5 hours after the fact.p-thizzil said:
oh yeah and i was gonna say we could always move Davis to safety. Rumph has been hurt a lot in the past couple years, even though Adams and Lewis stepped they game up a lot. but corner just might not be Davis’ thing.

The way Nolan is cutting the dead weight its only a matter of time until Harris and Barlow are gone. Its way to early to say but I will anyways, I think the only bad trade Nolan has made was the Engleberger – Williebrooks deal.

The only bad thing about this trade is that this is the first time Woods has been healthy since we drafted him. I think they should have waited unitl after the post draft mini camp to make sure he was worthless.

I agree this was the first time he has been healthy since his senior year, now that hes gone hes gonna be the receiver we all wanted him to be. Bad trade for us good trade for the Chargers. Bad idea there MN

Woods showed he was not willing to step up and get on the feild. Woods is not the only player to have hamstring issues and they come back withing the seaon. Woods is not the only player to deal with a thumb injury. But he never should the desire to come back. The games he did make a weak appearance in, he was lost. If you have all that time to study the play book and scout defense you should make a better showing.
12 hours after the fact. With this trade V Davis or AJ Hawk are on the way.

After this move I think we are definitely taking VD with our sixth pick in the draft and that is awsome. We had to make this move, there were rummors that Woods was going to be cut last season but we didn’t becasue of cap reason at least now we have something in return. Davis is still learning the CB position maybe he’ll come through this season but at least we are getting depth. Would someone PLEASE tell Mike Nolan that Bryant Gilmore is not an improvement to our WR position at all.
12 hours after the fact.Erickson said:
Don’t forget though. Woods would have been cut last season, if it had not been for the cap hit the team would have taken. As soon as he got hurt they placed him as fast as they could on the IR.

I, like a few others, like this trade. Nolan seems to be robbing teams with his dealing. We unload someone who had the world of potential, but doesn’t seem to have the heart to fulfil it… for someone who has started and has played through a few injuries.
Davis has the size, and decent speed to be a pretty good corner. I think it would be a mistake to move him to safety, because then where would we play Rumph? Although he’s oft-injured, he’s still one of our better DBs.
I like this trade, it makes Nolan’s decision easier come draft day: if Hawk is gone @6, VD will get the call.

The way I see it, how could you not like this trade? we traded a guy who has a grand total of like 10 catches in his 3 year, first round bust career. Sammy Davis has played and is a contributor, and with the addition of Walt Harris, we look a lot deeper and much more solid than we did last year. I like this move.

are you kidding, “try to go after charles woodson before he’s gone”? that is exactly the character of player NOLAN is weeding out
great trade, hopefully Davis can flourish under NOLAN and staffs knowledge. but, however, i don’t believe this in any way writes V.D. a ticket to S.F.! my two hopes for our draft situation are; denver pulls the trigger on the trade giving us two first round selections or, crossing my fingers, i’ve seen quite a few newer mocks showing SUPER MARIO around at pick six
that would make my f@*king season! i’ve dreamed of a pass rush from our d-line for so long!

Damn dog you mean to tell me you wouldn’t want charles woodson in you secoundary but maybe you’re right we’ll wait and see but we damn sure don’t need mutha fuckas getting burnt.
And another thing did yall see jerry rice on quite frankly talking about the the owner and saying he’s all about marketing and not winning so if he is then picking up somebody like charles woodson will help this nut ass marketing plan.
I’ve been a 49ers fan since 8 years old and I’m 32 now I’ve never seen no bullshit like this before let’s put our heads together and come up with a plan that would work and send it to the coach and the owner and get us back to winning super bowls and not no half ass team and fuckung marketing.

I am in agreeance with K Sizzle. Get VD with pick #1, and Bing with our second round pick. Seriously, getting VD will make my offseason cuz frankly us niner fans are accustomed to wanting the Superbowl every year. This year it seems like we’re just pulling for the playoffs. VD, VD, VD

I don’t know if it’s good or not but last I heard ray lewis wanted to be traded he’s a mike nolan guy or if not tell me whats good cause my man don’t think that charles woodson is not the type of guy mike nolan wants.

2 days after the fact.Call me crazy but i said to all who’d listen that the niners need to add 4 impact players to this years squad…Bryant and Allen (nice surprise) equal 1 those 2 studs would be be sick….we havent had an animal on D since Haley’s prime and a weapon on O since that sorry excuse for a Brotha T O and his circus left town….obviously we aren’t trading our whole draft but my point remains, we need MEN to come in and step up Williams and Davis are MEN who would make an impact now…AJ Hawk sure aint no Urlacher or Zach Thomas…i’d be PISSED if we passed on V Davis….Good riddance Lloyd, Good riddance Woods Welcome aboard Larry Allen’s nasty ass…teach our young line how to be men…that means you K Harris you big piano playing pussy (thanks Donahue)...were heading in the right direction…lets stay the course…peace!!

v.d. can not block, please get off his jock. just because he has muscles and showed up at the combine does not make him worth the #6 overall pick! i just pray that SUPER MARIO slips to us then we can pick up a te in the second round that will be better in the red zone and blocking. because ALEX will have a hard time getting v.d. his 4.38 deep routes with ERIC JOHNSON in there blocking. not knocking ERIC, think he’s one of the best pass catching tight ends in the leauge when healthy, but we need a te that can block and catch the ball. and we need a pass rush like SUPER MARIO can provide even more

Yo I hear that we just need a A or B draft because I can’t watch another losing season it was getting to the point that I was numb to it and what was the worst shit is that I’m from nut ass philly and when we lost to the dick head ass eagles 42 to 3 I had to here these fake ass eagles fans that wasn’t there when they was losing, was cowboys fans and these mutha fuckas always got another team just in case they lose in anytime and not to mention they wasn’t fucking with T.O when he was shaking pom poms and signing footballs with sharpies and all of a sudden they was loving him when he came here when they was winnig they was chanting and shit.
Yo yall just don’t know and not to mention this stupid mutha fucka with this video dissin T.O goes to show how they’re dickheads here it’s the same shit with the sixers so on and so forth.
We got to get back to dominance and get what we need and stop talking about these mutha fuckas in this draft that is not proven yet and get some veterans like mike nolan claims he wan’t and then worry about these mutha fuckas in the draft cause just as well we can be all hype about them they can also get cut.
I’m don’t even feel good about Alex Smith ONE TOUCHDOWN IN ALL THOSE FUCKIN STARTS.
