Despite having a second consecutive subpar season at tailback, the sixth-year veteran has won over San Francisco’s new coaches and decision-makers and still figures prominently in the team’s 2006 plans.
“He fits in well,” Niners coach Mike Nolan said. “He had some knee issues late in the year and we had to put him on IR. But Kevan did an outstanding job (in 2005), I really think he did. I thought there were some things in his game that I didn’t see prior to my being here. One was pass protection. I think he’s been a good back. When he’s playing well he is a good back. As a matter of fact, he had two very long runs called back by penalties that would’ve given him about 150 more yards just on his overall stats. He did a decent job throughout the season.”
Not only is Barlow impressing on the field, but he also has impressed off it as well.
“I saw some things in his play, not only on the field, but off the field,” Nolan said. “He carried himself in a positive way. Of all the things I heard about Kevan before getting on the job to be concerned about, I didn’t finish the season with those concerns. As a matter of fact, when he was kind of teetering he always came into my office and said, ‘Coach is this OK?’ it was just his nervousness in making sure he was staying in line with what the football team needs him to do and say. And as you all know, it’s important what they say because the guy next to you in the locker room, if you’re talking about him it’s not a good deal. You need to talk about yourself.”

I love Gore’s potential, but I’m sticking with Barlow. Can’t wait to see what he can do with a great O-Line blocking for him next year.

I don’t think it matters who is liked more… I think the 49ers are going to be a great 1, 2 running team next year, w/both backs seeing time! I think we will finally go back to being one of the best running teams in the NFL. (IMO)

We had the RB’s; we just needed to upgrade the OL to create the holes. I believe we are going to have a lot more fun watching our Niners!

NO NO NO!! get barlow out of there. trade him for another pick or something. the rb’s of our 9ers should be hicks and GORE!!

barlow is a beast. he will finally have a healthy OL since his 1000 yard season.

Cuzo P… People like you are the reason we were paying players that were not even on our team anymore… Barlow has had 2 mediocre seasons behind a horrible line… With our O-Line now and Gore sharing carries, I bet he surprises a lot of people this year. He’s also a good weapon for us receiving out of the back field – When he gets into the open field hes pretty dangerous!

All it takes are one or 2 injuries and the line will be just like last year!

Naw one or two injuries wont hurt this year they got dept, and with a healthy Johnson, and mybe Davis, Def. wont stack eight players in the box

^ Nicely Put… Every year there are there are going to be injuries and possible injuries… Its part of the game! With that said though its dumb to automatically think we’ll have injuries and that were no better off than we were… We’ve done a great job strengthening our line and it should pay off greatly for not only the running backs but for Alex Smith as well!
GO NINERS!

Our left side is beast with Jennings and Allen. Then we have a healthy Newberry which is a definite plus two. I really done kno who they are gonna start on the rigth side. With Harris, Baas, Snyder, adn Heitman. Thats the thign thougt, we have depth, its a good thing when you have 3 great verterans and 4 other players batteling for 2 positions. IM likeing it. Then having Barlow and Gore splitting should be the way to go. Bring back Barlow to the dyas when he split with Hearst.

Funny, thats the first thing I thought of also when I read that article. we could probably get mid round pick for him, possibly a 3rd. Well see.

Definitely shouldn’t trade Barlow, he has a hard time finding holes but he should have no trouble this year. Barlow has skills once he gets going, I think we r gonna see some smash-mouth footbal this year( so why did we let Beasley go?!!), and don’t forget about Mo!! We got 3 solid backs, man we gotta draft VD so the LB’s have to focus on him(playaction, etc.), I don’t wanna hear about no friggin’ trades

One thing about barlow he needs to improve on is his ball carry. Always not protecting the ball. He keeps the ball low to the ground and away from his body. Also he don’t hit the holes with force. Great runner need too improve on a few thing. He could be a much better RB.I think we should keep barlow and have him split time with frank gore. I notice he does better when he is in competition for top running back position. Frank gore will end up being the top running back for there 49ers if he stays healthy.

Gore reminds me a lot of Garrison Hearst. He’s small, but can pack a punch when he runs. He should eventually work his way into the starting role.
The knock on Barlow is that he tries to do everything himself. He doesn’t hit holes with force because he doesn’t trust his linemen that make the hole for him. As a result, he bounces around and tries to make plays. That doesn’t work either, because your teamates don’t know where you’re going, so how can they block for you? If Barlow learns to trust his line, and just hit the hole he is supposed to, he could be an awesome back. He knows how to catch, and is a decent blocker (learning that from Hearst).
We can potentially have two 1,000 yard runningbacks… Gore just has to stay healthy, and Barlow just has to learn to trust his line.

I am actually going to agree with Cuzo P up there though most of you will not agree with us. Trade Barlow, get rid of the man. Yes, Barlow stuggled behind a weak O-Line and that O-Line is stronger but not so much stronger than you all are dreaming. As for Barlow struggling behind a weak O-Line, did anyone noticed that Gore ran behind that same line…....and put up better numbers..???? Hicks did as well.
1 day after the fact.Yes Barlow was awesome when he and Garrison Hearst competed for the #1 role 3 years ago. Ever since, he has had one or 2 awesome games and the rest have been average at best (or at least expected) and very poor last year. I was at the niners vs. cowboys game last year when we had the ball on the 2 yard line and Barlow could not score on two straight runs. We need a persistent guy like Gore. Thats my opinion. Trade Barlow to another team with a third rounder and hope for a mid-first round pick if we sould be so lucky. That way we get something we need, like Vernon Davis and Chad Greenway in one round.
Oh, for you doubter, just know we have Gore and Hicks signed to the team already so we have 3 backs. What do you suppose we do with them?

I wish someone could go back and count how many times Barlow the BEAST was “hand” tackled. I think that would be a good money pool for this year if the Nolan propaganda machine can’t dump him. I’ll start with 22 just because I don’t expect the Beast to play a lot as the year progresses.
