The 49ers will begin interviewing prospective draft picks this week, beginning with Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk, who will visit with coaches Friday, a league source confirmed on Tuesday.

Other players on their way to Santa Clara in coming weeks include Maryland tight end Vernon Davis, Virginia Tech cornerback Jimmy Williams, USC safety Darnell Bing, and Oregon receiver Demetrius Williams.

Of that group, Hawk and Davis are players the 49ers are eyeing with sixth pick in the draft. The team also could select North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams or Texas safety Michael Huff at No. 6, but their visits could not be confirmed.

It orginally was believed that the Niners would have as many as 20 players in for visits or workouts before the draft. But 49ers vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan recently said the team plans to have private interviews with just five to eight prospects before the draft.
