Matthew Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports USC S Darnell Bing met with San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Nolan at the NFL Combine in February and chatted briefly with 49ers personnel director Scot McCloughan and his brother, David, the team’s director of college scouting, before his Sunday, April 2, Pro Day workout. He said he planned to fly to Santa Clara, California next week to meet with Nolan again.
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 227 | 40-Time: 4.53
Strengths:
Has excellent size…An explosive natural athlete…Has outstanding instincts…Does a great job of supporting the run…Tough, strong and physical…Can really lay the lumber…A playmaker who has a knack for being around the ball and making the big play…Productive and experienced having started three years for the Trojans.
Weaknesses:
Does not have great timed speed…Is not very natural in coverage…Goes for the big hit rather than the secure tackle too often…Can be too aggressive and will overpursue at times…Durability is a concern as he has a history of minor injuries.
Notes:
Was a part of the famed 2002 Long Beach Poly high school class that also included Winston Justice (USC), Marcedes Lewis (U.C.L.A.), Hershel Dennis (USC), and Manuel Wright (Miami Dolphins)...Did not qualify to play out of high school and spent 2002 at Long Beach (Calif.) City College…When all is said and done this guy is the type who always seems to come through with the game changing play.

I only saw this guy play in two games but I remember his performance because it stood out. Besides Greenway this guy is one of the few players I’m somewhat excited about because of his current abilities, upside, and where he might go in the draft.

yea..but if anything..late in the first or even until midway through the second..if nolan does want him..we might make a run at hawk, VD or trade down..because huff would probably be there at #6..

I’m one of those who would like to see the 49ers draft Williams, Hawk or Huff @ #6 (Even though I would love VD) and then M. Lewis w/our 2nd… but if what the article said about Bing is true… “When all is said and done this guy is the type who always seems to come through with the game changing play” – I wouldn’t mind at all drafting VD @ #6 and taking Bing w/our #2… He sounds like a very solid player… especially w/the short list of weaknesses… nothing really jumps out as a big negative (except maybe a small chance of injury)!

Bing would be a great pick in the late 1st or early second rd. As it stands now the Niners have four day 1 picks and with the depth of this draft….it may be wise to get as many as possible. I like Williams and Hawk, but if we can add 1 or 2 picks on day one to the 4 we already have…trading down could be smart if those two are gone. Remember the following Niners were all 2nd or later round picks (Montana, Clark, Craig, Rathman, Watters, Haley, Keena T., Michael Carter, Taylor, Hanks, T.O., Brent J., Newberry)!

The only thing I can figure is the niners are looking to trade down a few spots. I heard on NFL Radio that Bing put on a real good show at USC’s pro day that probably made him a mid first rounder, possibly ahead of Huff. But I think he’d be a big reach at 6 so I’m a little confused

jack…i’m so looking forward to the Hawks not doing a damned thing next season. Let them sign all these players. And then miss the playoffs. That would be classic.

ive played against that 2002 poly team when they were so “famed” although they had great athletes they lost. i wouldnt however mind seeing him play for the niners as he played tremendously well against us (DLS vs. LBP). SO all said and done i want him hes a good athlete that should be drafted in teh 1st but most likely will fall to us in the second i call him steal in the second and he will help out our secondary tremendously

Nick did you play with a Brandon and Calvin Becerra at DLS?
