Sources say the 49ers are high on versatile Kansas junior Charles Gordon, a playmaker that San Francisco is projecting as a top prospect, in contrast to what some other teams feel.
Gordon is garnering a wide range of opinions from franchises with teams grading him anywhere from an early second-round choice all the way to a late second-day selection. The Niners are giving serious consideration to using their pick in round two on Gordon, then using him at cornerback, wide receiver and as a return specialist.
The redshirt junior isn’t big at 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds, but he has skills to play all over the field. He led the nation with seven interceptions and was a third-team AP All-American at cornerback last year as a sophomore. He was a first-team freshman All-American at wide receiver in 2003. Gordon also holds the school record with 999 punt return yards and finished his three-year Kansas career with 106 catches for 1,232 yards and nine touchdowns. In 2005, Gordon’s time was too split between the offense and defense to rack up similar national awards. He intercepted two passes and caught 34 balls for 313 yards at receiver, but his statistics weren’t flashy enough to earn him anything outside of All-Big 12 Conference honors as an all-purpose performer. The big questions about Gordon are his size and lack of explosive speed. Some wonder if Gordon ever can develop into a full-time NFL cornerback, though his versatility to play on offense and return kicks will increase his value at the next level.

sounds like a bad ass… I’d love to see a jack of all trades like this kid on the Niners, but hopefully he’ll actually have skills at WR/CB/KR and not just be OK at all three. Opinions must be hugely split if people are considering him a 5th-6th round pick and we feel he’s a high 2nd… Hope that doesn’t blow up in our face

no no no, why would we consider this guy over devin hester, who is basically the exact same type of player, but more explosive, faster, and a bigger playmaker? there are way too many really good players to use a second, even a third round pick on this guy.

We are not in a position of drafting “projects”. I don’t understand drafts like Rasheed Marshall, Arnez Battle, although I like Battle. we need players who are already good at their position. Quit changing players positions and waiting 3 years for them to come around. It’s ridiculous for a 2-14 or 4-12 team…

Aaron you’re exactly right. This draft is solid, we should get starters in the 2nd or 3rd round. There’s a reason why some teams think he’s a late second day pick….because he probably is! Take him in the seventh and put him on the practice squad….out!

Did you read that article about Newberry on the Niners website. “Newberry feeling like a new man”? Imagine a health OL with Allen, Jennings, Newberry, Smiley, Snyder, Baas, Heitmann. Time for Alex Smith to step up with this protection.

seriously…how much can the niners really want this guy in the second round if they are releasing info regarding how high they are on him???? if they found someone really great that they wanted, they would keep their mouths shut about it until they take him. look at spencer at cb…he wasn’t even invited to the combine, and they ended up taking him in the second round earlier than most people projected him

HOW do you not understand arnez battle, we drafted him in the 6th round. I would say that is pretty good value and you dont expect guys to start as rooks at ound 6

dolemite, you’ve never watched Gordon play before then eh?
Out of the three top CB/WR/PR hybrid players (Hester, Gordon, Blackmon) only Gordon is a GOOD cornerback, better than guys like Anwar Phillips and on par with Kelly Jennings in terms of coverage skills. The rest are mediocre covermen and are looking like teams will using them more as WRs than CBs.

listen man if there are guys like booby carpenter? mercedes lewis, antonio cromartie?
i dont care what kind of athlete we better pick them up before an above average speed corner out of kansas w the 36 pick overall?

AntiG makes a valid point. Between Hester, Gordon, and Blackmon, Gordon is the most polished at corner. He lacks size (somewhat), and speed (on paper), but he plays a whole lot faster. Most people/sites have Blackmon and Gordon ranked higher than Hester.
As for drafting Carpenter, Lewis, or Cromartie: The only one that will probably be available in round 2 (out of those three) would be Lewis. But its highly unlikely the Niners would draft VD AND Lewis. Hence, a Guy like Gordon would be a nice grab.
While many teams may not rank Gordon high up there, he is talented and smart. Teams rankings depend, not only on skill, but also on need. Many coaches don’t like jacks-of-all-trades, and that hurts his rankings on other teams’ boards, but it doesnt take away from the fact he is one of the highest ranked prospects coming into the draft (at corner).

If we r looking 4 corner, Law and Woodson available. It would be nice 2 add a vet n the secondary, but adding a rookie?? I think we r bluffin, we better be.

I didn’t realize we drafted VD already in the first round. When did the draft start vin? I dont see why we would draft vd at the number 6 pick when we could get lewis in round 2

I never said they already drafted VD. I’ve actually been one of the people against VD being drafted. But all signs point to the fact they want offensive weapons (i.e. interest in Walker and Moulds). If they’re going to draft a tight end, VD is the best bet. I mean, look at VD’s physical tools alone. He causes super matchup problems.
I still want them to take Huff @ #6, but if they take VD, its highly unlikcly they’d take Lewis too. IF.

If we take VD in the first we need to use our 2nd on a LB like Bobby Carpenter or Demeco Ryans.

What we need to do is get VD with our 6th then trade up for a late 1st and pick up Manny Lawson.
