News is that Johnson is back on his feet and reports that the plantar fascia tear is fully healed. The five-year veteran out of Yale is easing himself into the team’s voluntary conditioning program and said he hopes to be at full speed, including running pass routes, by the second week of April.
The upcoming draft is particularly deep at tight end, and the speculation is that the 49ers might tap Maryland tight end Vernon Davis with the sixth pick. Coach Mike Nolan said last week that he is encouraged by Johnson’s recovery but insisted his progress will have little bearing on the team’s draft selections.
“We’re going to take the best player available in the draft,” Nolan said. “We’re not going to target a position, because we’re not at that point.”
Johnson on the other hand said he couldn’t blame the 49ers if they took a tight end early.
“If I were an owner, I’d want depth,” he said. “I’d want depth at every position. If they draft a tight end early, I’m not going to be offended in any way. That’ll inspire me even more to pick up my game.”

I don’t know about everyone else, but that sure as heck sounds like Vernon Davis to me!

Yeah it sounds like it to me too. I thought also thougth a lot who i want at 6th pick. I went through AJ Hawk, Mario Williams, Vernon Davis, but i think i want Mike Huff the most at tht pick, We need secendary more than anything. Only exception is if D’Brickashaw Ferguson is still there. If we get HAwk or Davis i wouldnt complain tho..

mike huff would be a waste of the 6th pick because he is probably not even going to go in the top 10. the best value at 6 is picking someone who could potentially go in the top 5. while vernon is more of a top 10 pick, it’s ok because most of the projected top 5’s will be gone when the niners choose

Steven, I agree with you, # 6 is kind of a tough pick this year, unless 2 QBs go in the top 5. If not, we are getting a top 10/12 guy for #6 money. Clearly if we could get (in order) M Williams, D’Brick, AJ Hawk, we’d be getting a hell of a value. If not I would want to trade down, altho it would be hard because, at that point, #6 would be very over priced. But I would trade down anywhere – I mean with any team, to get equivalent value and load up with some very good starters that can be had at picks 15-100 – for a lot less money than getting a TE at #6 money. That is not a smart investment.

Niners have to stop being cheap and pick the best player available at #6. Who cares if its D’Brick or VD. Huff we can get if we trade down.

If we can trade down a couple spots and still get VD that would be sweet.

There are going to be teams wanting the 6th pick to grab a QB ahead of Oakland.

With Oakland just signing Aaron Brooks and drafting Andrew Walter in the 2nd or 3rd round last year, along with having M. Tuiasasopo….I doubt they’d draft a QB. Then again, Weird Al does weird things. I can see AZ moving up from #10 to grab Young or Cutler with our #6….Warner ain’t going to last very much longer! At #10 we could still be looking at VD….we hope.
