Center Jeremy Newberry, who missed six games and rarely practiced because of a right knee problem, is making good progress in rehabilitation after delicate surgery, his agent said.
“Jeremy is doing great,” said agent Doug Hendrickson, who represents Newberry. “His rehab is going great. He expects to play two more seasons. With no setbacks, he should be 100 percent for training camp.”
Salary Cap Status:The 49ers were $18.4 million under the salary cap before agreeing to terms with Allen, so they have plenty of money to remain active in the free-agent market.

yeah, newberry has just not been able to stay healthy, but three years ago he was one of the top 3 centers in the league…
good news about the cap space, 18.5 mil is enough to do major damage in free agency, even though we’ve already taken care of some needs

I have high hopes fro newberry. Good find Erickson, hopefully we can get Dyson, Arrington, or Buckner with the rest of our money. (besides about 5 mil to sign rookies).

If newberry can say healthy, we have a very decent line. Especially with Allen and Jennings on the left side. Wont be no seattle left side. but it will get the job done. With roughly 15 million left on the cap gives us room to sign atleast 2 more greta free agents or 3-4 decent ones and then sign our draft picks and stil be comfortable going in the season.

There aren’t even 2 more great FA left on the market. Everyone left has major question marks and isn’t really worth it.
Just because we signed Larry doesn’t mean we’re goign to mortgage the future now on more FA pick ups. We’ll have a couple more mid range pick ups at best, and if we sign a big name it’ll be to a short contract.

the other day on knbr talk radio, Mike Nolan said that if ferguson was available then they would get him. I think if they are high on him then maybe a trade up is possible with jennings going to the right side.

Josh….no he did not say he would get him…He said that the only 2 postions we are really not looking at are QB and O-line,but he said if DBrick was still there he would be hard to pass up….That dont mean he will take him. he said he will most likely pick the best player available for our needs.

which is VD

I dont think so. I think that he has something up his sleeve and well make a big splash in the draft

This much we all agree on, we’re gettin a stud come draft time. Instant impact is precisely what we need.

If D’brick is there at #6, teams will be lining up to trade for our pick. If we could trade down just a little and pick up a 2nd or 3 rounder and still get VD….that would be butterlicious!

Now thats pure genious P’Nelly, but we gotta get VD.

I agree with Nolan having something up his sleeve. Honestly, the guy is so hard to read. Even as a huge niner fan who follows the organization pretty closely, I feel like I have no idea which direction we’ll go come draft day. I believe we’ll make smart moves, but if someone told me Mario, VD, D’Brick, Hawk, and Huff were all availible at the 6th pick I wouldn’t even know who we’d pick. I don’t even know how far we’d consider trading down.
I mean personally I (realistically) want VD. I also would be hesitant to trade down. But I just have no idea what Nolan has up his sleeve.

I have sort of the the same feeling, but with that being said I wouldnt be upset if they went with Hawk, a guy who has done well his whole time at the Ohio State and picked up a TE like Pope, Byrd or Fasano in the second round. I read today that Johnson is on the field so that is a plus. I just think that a guy like Davis is a gamble because there is a lot of really good TEs this year. I think the combo of Hawk and Byrd would be better than Davis and some other LB. But thats just me.
2 days after the fact.Dave said:
See I don’t agree. I think Davis is leaps and bounds bette than any other TE out there and possibly any other TE even in the NFL. Time will tell obviously, but I don’t think Hawk is all that much more impressive or better than most of the linebackers in the draft. Sure he’s the best one, but I don’t feel he’s that much better than the LBs who will be drafted after him.
Hawk also isn’t really playing a position thats has game changing ability. Sure he’s a good player, but if we need someone to come up with a big play, how big of a play can he come up with in a situation like that.
Davis has game breaking abilities. He’s also another option for Smith to throw to. He’ll help draw some coverage away from Bryant. And if he turns out like we expect one day he could be drawing double coverage (consistently). That’ll open up our passing game more & our running game. It also makes every player around him all that much better.
Offense is different from defense in that regard. A play maker like Davis really changes things up, where as on defense the entire defense still needs to be solid. Defense is more about not having any weak links.

newberry bak will definitely help us out on the line and give smith a lil more time in the pocket. But we still have question marks on defense and we need to get an lb.
2 days after the fact.Darrel said:
It’s not a knock on Hawk( he runs a 4.3 with a nose 4 the ball), it’s just VD would help our young QB and O so much, on top of providing insurance 4 EJ. But no doubt about there r some real good ball players we r gonna have to pass on. Let’s hope we make the right choice(the DUKE)

Dave I see your point. The problem with our defense is there is not that one guy who you think of when you talk about our D. With any of the top d’s in the league a certain player registers with you, like the Bears (Urlacher), Dolphins (Thomas), Steelers (porter), 49ers (Young). That is my point, the niners have somebody but he is getting close to leaving and they need that impact player on d to take them to the next level (or first). Dont get me wrong I think Davis would be huge for us, but I believe the team would be better served with AJ and Byrd.
