How could you Ray?
Ray Wersching, the retired San Francisco 49ers kicker who booted field goals in two Super Bowl victories, was indicted Wednesday on federal charges of embezzling $8 million from an insurance company and tax evasion.
Wersching, 55, the owner of Ray Wersching Insurance Agency in Redwood City, is accused of diverting premiums earmarked for Farmers Insurance from 1997 to 2000. He is also alleged to have evaded paying taxes on $3.6 million in corporate income from 1999 to 2000.
Wersching has been served with a summons to appear Monday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco before Magistrate Judge Bernard Zimmerman, said U.S. Department of Justice spokesman Luke Macaulay.
Wersching, an ex-University of California football star, faces five allegations—embezzlement; permitting a felon convicted of dishonesty to participate in an insurance business; failing to file a corporate tax return; and two counts of tax evasion.
The penalties carry a range of prison sentences from one to 10 years, and fines of $250,000 plus restitution.
