Adam Schefter of NFL Network – One of the busiest teams of the offseason struck again when the Seattle Seahawks reached agreement with former San Francisco linebacker Julian Peterson on a blockbuster seven-year, $54 million deal.
The deal, which the Seahawks and agent Kevin Poston spent today finalizing, includes $18.5 million worth of guarantees, including $10 million this season.
A Seahawks official confirmed the agreement in principle with the linebacker the San Francisco 49ers designated their franchise player one year ago.

lavar arrington, anyone? hopefully, if we get him, then we can draft VD…but as of right now, first round needs are 1)mario williams, 2)aj hawk, 3)VD…if we can get a solid LB in free agency (who’s left?) then we can put VD as #1…

Oh well. Seattle was willing to pay money that SF wasn’t. 49ers lost a good player but it’s not the end of the world.
VD will send JP to the clinic, eh?
59 mins after the fact.Dave said:
There’s a difference between being aggressive and overpaying. Do you really think Peterson is worth $8 mil a year? There’s a reason we stopped franchising him. If we really wanted to pay him that much we could have just franchised him again really.
The Seahawks paid out their ass for him for a couple reasons: – This will help them cover up the stupidest move they ever made in not franchising Hutchinson. – This will probably be Holmgren’s last season. – The Seahawks only have a window of so long before their chances of winning a superbowl trophy are over. – For a team that is a legit contender, to go into the season with over $20 mil cap space is suicide. They are at the point where they really need to give it their all and see how far it takes them, and that is what they are doing. Why do you think they are willing to trade their first round pick away for Abraham? Why do you think they are willing to overpay Peterson just to see how he fits into their defense, and to see if he’s even recovered from his injury? At this point they are so close that they can taste it, and as a result they will do anything they have to in order to have a chance to win it all.
Unfortunately it probably is too little too late. Losing Hutchinson will be a HUGE blow. Their offensive line was clearly the cornerstone for their team. Hutchinson and Jones combined only gave up 3 sacks all season. They had been working together for years and had some unparalleled chemistry.
Would I have rather seen JP go to some team like the Dolphins? You bet, but if JP fails in Seattle, it’ll be all that much sweeter.

Losing Jp fine, losing him to a division opponent is ridiculous!

I agree to not overpaying for Peterson, but there were some quality defensive backs available that the 49ers didn’t push for. What the hell are they doing using there time trying to sign Gilmore and McCaddley. These guys probably suck so bad that they won’t even make the niners team. I’m beginning to think York and Parage (or whatever his name is) are handcuffing Nolan and not letting him go after guys, because if they are not he and Scott Mac don’t want to improve this team anytime soon. If they build it soly through the draft we may see the playoffs in five years.
1 hour after the fact.Dave said:
On the brightside, now we can draft VD…. (the texans signed Putzier to a 4 year deal for $7.5 mil).
2 hours after the fact.Jorge said:
Gilmore is a 2 time Special Teams MVP, and McCaddley played solid for us down the strech. 3 hours after the fact.Shane said:
Hunter Hillenmeyer is a decent player, and would only cost a 5th round pick if the Bears didn’t match the offer. I’d say he’s worth a look.
Peterson is a very good player, who could have been great. But he’s had some serious injuries, and this contract offer is just too big.

I agree with the strategy from Nolan & co so far regarding not overspend on high profile players and instead pick up some cheaper rotationsplayers. However I am starting to worry about the lack of activity eventhough there still is some useful players left.
I would like us to reach cutable agreements with some of the following players:
WR Price, TE Baker, LB Polley, S Tank Williams (I know he is SS but still), LB Short, LB Diggs, LB Boulware OG Jacox, WR Boston, WR Horn, WR Morgan.
Some of them is going to pan out and the rest can be cut in camp.
As fare as high profile players left on the FA marked I would only like us to sign Andre Dyson. I would be a decent 1. CB for years.

Sorry for this post, but i need to know whats with the love fest for Vernon Davis on here? I live on the east coast so i dont get nearly enough Niner info. Is he really a candidate to be drafted? Even if so, i dont think one of our major needs is at TE. Does VD on get drafted if Hawk or someone else doesnt slip to us? Just curious thats all. I may be biased cause im a HUGE Buckeyes fan so im pulling for us to draft Hawk if he falls our way. We need to start drafting great players and not projects if we wanna turn this team around.

Id rather get Boulware over Arrington to replace Peterson. Arrington is Poston represented, and Boulware will come cheaper.

I’m glad we didn’ match he isn’ worth that much. Who cares if he goes to the hawks, he’ll make them worse and screw up there financials. But I’m little concerned about the inactivity with all this cap room. What happened to dyson…I thought I read here he was coming for a visit? If we get him, a FA LB(Polley),FS(Willams),and OL. The draft Davis I think we’ll be okay. The only thing I can think is he’s taking a 2 year approach, where he’ll get us better this year then with the cap space for next year, spend on players to take us to the next level which is the playoffs.

I have not been impressed with what I have seen happen so far with free agency. But, I am not responsible for bring the Niners back to the top. Managing the cap, player, and coaching staff is too much for Nolan and McCloughan to do on their own. They need a TOP Executive to help spread the responsibilities. The Seahawks are a great example of how the Head Coach could not do it all. Let’s be patient and stand behind our team!

I think Seattle did this move to just make another run at the Super Bowl. Sure JP thinks he has a 7 year contract BUT he’ll probably be released within the next few years after the 18.5 mil is paid. Its funny he mentioned he always wanted a long term contract but he won’t be there long. The seahawks are doing what the niners did in 1993, which is to feast on pricy free agents. Look for seattle to be in a hole in a couple of years after fat ass holmgren leaves and their cap is all screwed up. The hawks will be just another team to slaughter for the future playoff bound niners. And come on guys, lets let the niners play their season before we bad mouth Nolan!

I can understand how things seem (lost JP, Winborn, and Carter). JP has been hurt for more than 1.5 years. He finished on IR last year. Winborn was active but out of place most of the time. He also suffered what was thought to be a career ending neck injury. Carter was hurt in 2004. He was also out of place in the 3-4. He is now overpayed in WSH. He has to earn that $$$. Granted we lost quality men, but football wise maybe we are better off. We need to look at things after the draft.

Darrel, don’t be such a damned baby. Have a plan. Don’t focus on next year. Next year we will be somewhere between 4-12 and 8-8. And it doesn’t really matter where. We want to develop skill, discipline and teamwork next year, so that we will have a foundation to build on so we can get to 12-4 in ‘07 and ‘08. Winborn and JP both did not fit Nolan’s disciplined system of defense. Sure JP made plays that you noticed. But you didn’t notice when he was out of position and a play went for a TD where he should have been. Ac,JP, and Winborn all were good players, but not good for Nolan’s system. This is the cost of making a big mistake – Donahue/Erickson. We have to start over and that means painful cleaning house. Most of the guys who do not fit Nolan’s schemes will be gone this year and will be replaced with guys who do fit. Give them some time to play, develop, make mistakes – and lose a bunch of games next year. Then, as some other smart posters have said, we will put together that foundation that Seattle has now and we can supplement the missing pice with a big name FA and take a shot at the SB.

moulds isn’t worth a trade…most likely the bills will cut him before training camp…if the 49ers want him, they can get him for no compensation to the bills
1 day after the fact.P'Nelly said:
Why VD….because Super Mario and Hawk will likely be gone by #6 and VD is a PLAYMAKER. He would also be a safety valve for Alex, which he desparately needed last year. The draft is deep on LB’s, so we likely can grab 1 or 2 in rounds 2-5….Seattle proved that last year with Tatupu and Hill (2nd & 3rd rounders). Forget Moulds, he’s in the twilight of his career and will want big $’s….let’s spend the money on younger guys who might be around for a while!
1 day after the fact.steve said:
the thing about drafting an old reciever vs. young reciever is that a old reciever with expierence will help our young qb develop as well as our your recievers. you cant just throw a bunch of young guys out there and be like LEARN, they need a couple people to learn from. and alex needs someone with expierence to throw to. I am all about getting good young talent but we need a couple guys with expierience.

Good Points, I just wonder if the Niners would buck up….Moulds is going to want some coin and our boys have been tight lately. P’Nelly you bring up a good point. People are saying the Jets will take Cutler over Young but they just traded for Ramsey, so now they have Ramsey (should have started in WAS), and Pennington. 2 days after the fact.steve said:
if that happens then i guess VD is the best bet or maybe a trade
2 days after the fact.P'Nelly said:
I hadn’t heard that Nolan talked bad about Huff. Maybe trade down to pick #10-15, pick up a 2nd or 3rd rounder….and take Broderick Bunkley (DE in the 3-4) or Santonio Holmes (Best WR in draft)!
2 days after the fact.JP said:
Just a thought, but we may be in a position at #6 to entertain serious trades. We have heard about MINN and now supposedly DEN did their moves supposedly to be in position to trade up for a QB. At our spot, Young and Cutler should be there. I say squeeze OAK since they appear to want Young. and maybe move again. If Nolan/Mclouglan want V.Davis then we cannot drop below 12 because I am sure AZ or STL will take him. Unless we can live with Mercedes Lewis or Leonard Pope high in Rd. 2 (if available).
